Chit-Chat: Back to the Grind(stone)

What made me cringe is not the author speaking against the Ratchet and Clank PS4 remake, but him simply going out of his way and suddenly put Dark Souls 3 and its cousins in his written review. That's not how its done. But if that's how he wants to do it, then i guess the MUCH SMARTER READERS than myself can understand.

I could easily read the review (and still laugh at his opinions) but when he went out to mention other franchises and made SEVERAL paragraphs in an attempt to sound smarter, that's where it drew the line, thus marking said author to be murdered by my murdershaft.

Now I feel a little fear for Doom 4 and its reviews going to be reviewed and criticized in the same lines as that dunghole. I'm on to you. Then again, Id Software and hopefully no intervention or meddling from Bethesda can use several days to improve on their game before May 12, else all hope for Doom coming back in the mainstream will be lost. Then again, i'd still buy the game since I love the franchise and idsoftware, and tell these "wannabee wise reviewers and journalists" to go one-finger-arse-bang themselves.

And because my back pain has been killing me since i woke up, I feel the rage. RAGE AND ANGER! TIME TO RIP AND TEAR SOME DICKS OFF!!! WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*opens Brutal Doom: Project Brutality*

Honestly, any video game journalist arguing about nostalgia and the perpetuation of a "more of the same" attitude is a hypocrite, given the consistently high scores they give games in series that perpetuate that attitude, irrespective of any flaws they may have. If it's part of a certain series, it automatically gets rave reviews and ridiculous amounts of hype. They've got no business complaining about it when they promote it.

I can't say I'm particularly excited for E3 this year...to me it's always been just another corporate event that has very little relevance to my gaming preferences. I'll keep an eye on it, but to me it's just a sudden burst of announcements of games I probably won't be interested in. xD

This generation is a good example of things done wrong though. The number of "HD collections" we've had of games that haven't really needed them - The Last Of Us, Dishonored God of War III, Tomb Raider, and soon the Batman Arkham and BioShock games - that have in no meaningful way enhanced the experience is pretty awful. These are the kinds of things that should be frowned upon, rather than remakes/HD remasters of games several years old that are now pretty dated and have room for improvement.
Well, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that remakes as they're meant to function and the HD remake trend of the past two generations are mutually exclusive. Should they be frowned upon? Absolutely. I would say that Shadow of the Colossus' HD Remake was probably one of the biggest wasted opportunities in gaming due to not incorporating cut ideas and remaining faithful to the PS2 release...which would have been fine, but the textures looked awful and the models mostly dated, as well as the horrible framerate drops, all of which should have been the selling points for it over the PS2 version.

Buuuuuuuuut the thing about HD remakes, and why I don't really compare them to remakes, is because, first off, they're rarely remakes in any meaningful sense. Really. No part of me believes that they recoded SotC or Ico or God of War III or any of these collections from scratch. And if they did, bravo to them, but when an updated mobile port the likes of any NIS game or P4Golden outshines you in every way, I mean...c'mon. I have a great deal of disdain for the Pokemon remakes, but if nothing else, they're actually goddamn remakes. They seek to actually improve and modernize the older games, which is what a remake should do.

But there's the second thing, which is why me saying they're mutually exclusive is egregious, because it's pretty scummy on the side of console pubs. This, of course, being that they don't make their consoles backwards compatible anymore (well, namely the PS3, PS4, and Xbone) Worse, despite the fact that they have the actual means to put these games on their consoles digitally (and they've proven this, especially Sony), they use HD Remakes as a "valid" means to get games on newer consoles when they don't necessarily "need" to be changed all that much. Or to make a quick buck, in other words. In turn, console devs can use these to push people away from their older consoles and to by the new ones, especially when the console's fresh and new, so it's a mutual scumminess, even if that's just business. And I wouldn't have too much of a problem with this if it really didn't send out this idea of what is and isn't right for a remake to be.

I agree with the majority of your points, but touching upon ICO/SotC briefly, I'd actually put forward a small case for them as the right kind of HD remaster in some respects, because prior to their PS3 re-release it was practically impossible to find them for a reasonable price anywhere. Same goes for the Zone of the Enders HD collection, Chrono Trigger on the DS, Tales of Symphonia Chronicles, and a few others. Whilst they were essentially graphically touched-up ports, they were games that really needed a second release because of how damned scarce they were. Sure, it would have been nice if they had put some sort of effort into the release of most of those, but at least they offered a cheaper alternative to trying to find some original copies. Now if only similar scarce titles would receive the same treatment, things would be a lot less infuriating on this front.

All too often it's excessively popular titles that you can easily pick up cheaply either online or the high street that get this treatment, and that is a pretty scummy thing for developers to do as you said. Nintendo might be a bunch of serious jackasses for region-locking their consoles, but at least they make them backwards compatible with the previous generation. It wouldn't kill Sony and Microsoft to do the same, or at least bring their older titles to their respective online stores as they have done in the past.

People need to actually learn what the difference between a remake and a remaster is, too...this applies to both the people making them and the people buying them. The two terms are used interchangeably, which is a huge issue because fundamentally they're two completely different things.

Okk so my backpain's gone and i re-read the review and I finally made sense of what the reviewer was trying to say. Well I'm not really going into details but I'll do say something about remasters/remakes and whatnot....

basically whatever was thrown in this chat. Too many people have cited what a remake should be or what an ideal remake/remaster is.

I'll sum it up though: Better Game engine + do things that was not possible in the original engine + new gameplay elements that enhance but not ruin the original charm of the game + gore (if applicable) = Best remaster ever. Hence Brutal Doom. Too bad Brutal Doom isn't a commercial game, and not even Doom 4 unless Id Software and Bethesda actually does some magic before May 12 hits on.

I wonder how necessary a better game engine actually is...I mean, Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 1 on Vita is vastly superior to the original PS3 version, and all that really does is massively restructure the gameplay to be more in-line with later titles and touch-up the story a little. That's definitely a remake by any definition.

Atelier Rorona Plus on PS3 is much better than the original version too, and that's on the same console...although that's really more of a remaster than a remake I suppose.

Regardless of what some critics said about the Ratchet and Clank remake not being too different from its original PS2 incarnation, I'm still getting the game. R&C is what i missed since i was too invested with Jax and Daxter at the time.

Come on VG, you all know you all want your fresh meat from the grinder.

Game: Brutal Doom v20b. additional addons: RealGoreV4. Definitely testing RealGore with Project Brutality (aka Brutal Doom on hyper steroids) pretty soon

Spoiler:

Interesting note, RealGoreV4 or one particular version of Brutal Doom is one of the big reasons that Brutal Doom's creator got a huge backlash in his respective forum (Zdoom forums). I guess taking photorealistic sample pictures of actual dead people's gored carcasses and turning them into part of an add-on/mod can get you shanked in the arse.

To be completely honest, I'm now having mixed feelings with Doom 4 being any good. The Multiplayer Beta got some really mixed reactions from the Steam community, then again, its Steam and no way they are an empirical source. Also, I feel that Bethesda's meddling too much with IdSoftware. I might as well still get the game and Kiilling Floor 2 as well once i get my new computer.

I never played Jak and Daxter either. Kinda skipped the whole second wave of anthropomorphic platform/adventure games, haha. I had a 360 for the longest time though because the PS3 was so damned expensive in the beginning, and during the PS2 era I was well and firmly entrenched in my Gamecube; I wouldn't give Sony the time of day. I'm probably going to wind up in town tomorrow though, so I might pick up Ratchet and Clank then if it's affordable...if it isn't I'll buy it online when I get home instead perhaps. Although I've got Stranger of Sword City and Yokai Watch coming this week too, so I should probably wait...

Doom isn't really on my radar...if I want a multiplayer shooter I'll probably get Battleborn.

WAIT THAT STILL HASN'T HAPPENED?

Jesus...I got that game almost back when I started working. That Fates hasn't even gotten over there yet absolutely floors me, too. Apparently adding the letter "u" several times over takes a full team months to get done.

Nope, we didn't even have a release for it - or Fates, for that matter - until the last Nintendo Direct, which wasn't actually that long ago. I don't mind so much, since I've had a lot to play in the meantime and I'm not excited for either game (even though I'm getting both...twice in the case of Fates) but if they pull this kind of shit with the Dragon Quest games...

There is no excuse for these insane release gaps between the US and EU. But then again, I could be wrong - only corporate giants like Idea Factory and NIS America can afford to have the US and EU release dates in the same week, if not the same month. Silly me. It's far too hard for Nintendo.

Could be worse, I suppose - at least they're not Atlus. Being a fan of Atlus titles outside of the US and Japan is the very definition of the word "suffering".

EDIT:

OH, THE IRONY OF THAT STATEMENT.

Yeah, the date gap is ridiculous, it honestly doesn't make sense to me why they would do this. If they were redubbing them and writing completely new scripts from scratch, sure, but...like, this is just plain silly. There's no obvious reason for it, and it sure as hell doesn't help the revenue stream, if that's what they're going for.

Also, speaking of Atlus in Europe, and speaking of NIS America, we got this little unfortunate piece of news today.

https://gematsu.com/2016/04/nis-america-will-no-longer-publish-atlus-games-europe

Well, I suppose for the 3DS they can afford to do it, because it's not like we have any choice but to wait, thanks to region locking. You'll notice that the release dates between US and EU for PS4/Vita titles - especially from niche publishers - isn't quite so wide. Or digital-only in one region and physical in another. I imported both Code;Realise and Norn9 when I found out they were digital-only here. I've never had to import for other titles though, because they release date gap has been less than a week. For 3DS, though? Don't have that option unless I buy a US 2DS or something.

I suppose it might have something to do with additional languages or something, but to me that's a poor excuse. Being forced to wait for games, or getting them digital-only when other regions get physical copies, is just bad customer service. Inexcusably so. It happens more with big-name publishers too, probably because they can afford to lose the revenue from the discontent minority.

Ha, I think we saw that news at more or less the same time. I'm not as broken up about it as a lot of people are, but I do hope someone else picks up the slack, if only because I'd like to get Etrian Odyssey 5. I will not be purchasing digital-only titles that get physical US releases, though.

DQ7&8 I would assume be summer and fall respectively. If even one of them slips into 2017, I dunno how I am going to even handle it.

On another note, I am playing through Symphony of the Night for the first time ever. Having beaten all 6 of the GBA/DS metroidvanias, and only 2 hours in, I need to reassess my view on the entire era. I am not used to the shield at all, and I am dying way too much to projectile attacks for nothing. Holy shit.

I think I could handle a delay, just as long as it's a delay in both the US and EU territories. If it's just an EU territory delay - because it's unthinkable 98% of the time we might get something before the Americas - I'll literally explode. My screams of fury will shatter the planet. Or something. But yeah, any delay would still stuck...I'd be willing to bet VIII will slip into 2017 or be holiday 2016, though.

Too bad for Nintendo SMT fans.
Are there even any left after the disaster than was SMT IV's release? It was even worse than Rune Factory 4's, and at least that had a valid excuse - the freakin' development team shut down. God only knows why SMT IV took so long.

...still haven't bought it. Still waiting for it to be released properly. Well, not really, but if it was released properly I might think about thinking about maybe considering it. Maybe.

Even holiday 2016 would be acceptable for VIII,anything after March will be an issue for me. Mandatory Army Service and what not, gotta love the EU! VII being completely new for me will tide me over as well, VIII is more a quest of retribution, finally beating it after failing to endure the PS2 version.

Ahhh chainsaw, the great communicator.. well actually, a minigun is fine too. That's why I'm here to remove all of the salt you've all been getting with the VG industry with more mindless and delicious, sweet and yummy demon meat.

[PokeCommunity.com] Back to the Grind(stone)

Game: J's Brutal Doom V20b + Maps of Chaos Overkill + RealGoreV4

More fresh meat from the grinder boys.

Speaking of Demons, Shotguns... We need more of this in our lives ladies:
DEMONS WITH SHOTGUNS

Its like, somebody answered one of my childhood wishes and created the very game, just for me to mindlessly roll over. Instabuy'd! Also, as a minor rant. WE NEED MORE GAMES THAT PRECISELY GIVE WHAT THE TITLE SAYS. DEMONS WITH SHOTGUNS. Best title for a game in Summer 2016

Also, Borderlands 3 (which is finally confirmed after Battleborn and DLCs) should now have a graphic level of gore. Please Gearbox or whoever will be working on it. Borderlands + Its silliness + Gore = would create the perfect combination of Mad Max, Steroid abuse, and MANPOWER, and testosterone induced joy.

So much for that rumored reveal of a Batman Arkham Collection today.

if I made a RWBY game, what should it be? A First Person shooter like Doom + Brutal Doom Project Brutality + Killing Floor 1&2 (I'd be so euphoric to make Ruby Rose do a fatality on some demon by ripping its painis off while spouting out a cute one liner) or a 3rd person hack and slash like DMC + Warriors + God of War?

I'm pretty sure that Rooster Teeth wouldn't mind having an M++ Rated RWBY game for the ladies and grunts to play. Besides Yang broke Tifa's neck like a Doom 4 character would so its all good.

Speaking of RWBY X Things I love... A RWBY X Killing Floor fanfiction exists... I'm done. Dunzo. In the groin. Holy Shotguns this is the best since RWBY X Doom

*************

Also, Holy Balls I'm so garbage at Counter Strike that I DIE TO NORMAL LEVEL AI BOTS. Then again, whoever made the Bots in Counter Strike are awesome for having an AI that can headshot with the crappiest of weapons X__x. I'm definitely having a long way before i consider myself CSGO viable.

************

AK47. the very best there is. When you absolutely positively sure you need to kill every single mother ****ker in a room, accept no substitutes. An Ak47 should be in every game ever.
