Why does this cute little dinosaur dragon evolve into a ball of ugly nothingness before becoming the supreme Salamence?

Supposedly Shelgon is the result of Bagon jumping off cliffs in desperate attempts to fly. After falling and crashing into the ground so many times, it builds up a tough exterior, kind of like a full body callus I guess. It could also be like a cocoon, and then "hatches" into the "butterfly", Salamence, finally achieving its dream of being able to fly. This also works out since evolution in Pokemon is more similar to metamorphosis (like with the catepillars and butterflys again) and not irl evolution.

I was always confused by this!! I'm not a huge Shelgon fan but it still is a pretty cool evolution line! It's kinda like a bug-type evolution with the cocoon middle stage and I think it's pretty cool cause the levels you need to hit to evolve goes completely against the bug-type norm of evolving very early!

I love Shelgon! Don't hate on the giant bone sphere of doom! Not even joking when I say I like Shelgon a whole lot more than I like Salamence. I actually once had a shiny Shelgon that I purposely did not let evolve, I made him carry Eviolite and named him "Watermelon", he was super cool, or at least I thought he was.

Some food for thought, relating to the metamorphosis that Bagon goes through, Bag in "Bagon" is most likely refrencing what is known as a "Bagworm" which is an insect that is often known to cover itself in varying materials that may be natural from its body or natural from its environment which it eventually builds a cocoon from that it can often carry around on itself before it finds a proper spot to metamorphose into a moth.

This makes a lot of sense that Bagon would be the type of bagworm to create a carry-able coocoon from it's own skin and possibly bones over time until it is completely covered by this shell from head to toe until it is finally able to emerge from it as a full grown dragon, "Salamence".

    Some good points :)
I would have preferred him to keep the passive as well.. intimidate is not all that useful for every situation (on Salamence) as a defensive passive was (on Bagon and Shelgon)
