Basic Pokemon Looks

How come most pokemon at there basic form looks like an animal or object you would see in real life but when they evolve there like nothing you could imagine. For example Mamepato looks like a pigeon you would see today but when it evolves into Hatooboo and Kenhorou it doesn't look like a pigeon anymore. What are other pokemons that are like this?

While Mamepato and Hatooboo are pigeons Kenhorou is more likely to be based on a pheasant. Right when I saw Kenhorou I believed it to be a pheasant and after looking it up it apparently could be based off of that or a few other game birds such as a turkey, tragopan or road runner.

As for other Pokemon I believe that sometimes they start of as a common looking animal so they'll look normal. Meaning they won't look extremely powerful or terrifying to correlate with the fact that they are the base of their evolution, the weakest stage. As they evolve they become less animal looking/normal looking to show that they have become stronger. That's just my take on it.

When Pokemon are in their base forms, most of them look cute and cuddly, such as the starter Pokemon and beginning birds and rodents. Another example to add would be the Starly line. When Starly evolves into Staravia, and later into Staraptor, it gains hawk-like characteristics in addition to the starling characteristics. Also: Glameow and Purugly. Glameow is based on a house cat but Purugly is based on a tiger cat.

I guess as more power is gained (through evolution), the power may cause the pokemon to change in appearance, either drastically or just a little bit. Just my two cents.

Yeah...sometimes it goes backwards...I think Raichu looks like a chubby mouse/hamster, while Pikachu has less of a resemblence, and Pichu even less so......

And sometimes they have certain characteristics on one, then the missing ones on the evolution...Taillow has the general colour scheme and shaping of a swallow, but Swellow's tail is more like the real thing.

    Chimchar's family is another:

    Chimchar - sort of monkeyish
Monferno - really like a monkey!
    Infernape - ok...wtf?

Like what PlatinumDude said. Our animals are generally cute and cuddle, then in the pokemon world they evolve into bigger and more majestic things.
