Best anime male lead.

Takashi Komuro is fast becoming a favourite of mine.

Hirano is considered one of the main characters right?
Hopefully, he will become a real hero in the anime :o

Yes, he's a supporting-kinda main male character. Takashi will probably be the only hero, and I'm okay with that, but I want to see Hirano with his sniper, taking zombie head off.

It's too early to say that imo. I think we'll know who's better when the 2 shows have a similar amount of episodes.

Noone has yet to mention Shinji Ikari from the Evangelion series? shame on you all. Considdered to be one of the best (the best in my own opinion) animes of all time. Though it may be becoming a little dated at this point, the story as well as shinji's character hold a powerful message immersed in angst and the search for an identity.
I agree with many of your decisions, newer protagonists have a different attitude to reflect today's society. I had a fun time with death note personally, Light showed us the madness of man when given god-like powers. In a way, I preferred the movie's retelling of the story

If you read Gantz, you'd already know what I'm talking about. (Not watched, read. It got FMA'd.) People who have read Gantz already know that Kei Kurono is an incredibly protagonist in which way you can never look at another protagonist the same way. Takashi Korumo is the minimum when it comes to Kei Kurono. He does his badassery, awesome and epicness okay, but it feels like he's trying to do it Kei Kurono style, which he can't pull off. I'm sorry if this sounds harsh or like I'm arguing or forcing an opinion on you. Neither of those are intended.

Kei from Gantz is probably my favorite male protagonist ever, though cooler in the manga. And I like Kyon from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

i believe MANY BEFORE ME have already posted these three names.
but i thought i'd do it again. XD;

Takizawa Akira (Eden of the East // Higashi no Eden)
Kyon (The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi // Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu)
Edward Elric (FullMetal Alchemist)

-
oh, and just now

Lawrence Craft (Spice and Wolf // Ookami to Koushinryou)

came to mind .

Bro, I love Goku from Dragon Ball. He's so young and naive, always getting into crazy stuff. Makes me laugh, bro, and the part where he trains with Master Roshi against Krillin just get lose to Master Roshi in the Martial arts tournament. I love it. Not to mention the adventures they originally had when having to collect the Dragon Balls. Adventure type anime leads to more character development than pure action... those were the days.

oh, new adds..

Kimi ni Todoke ; Kazehaya Shouta
Special A ; Takishima Kei
Ouran High School Host Club ; Suoh Tamaki

although the first three are still more epic, i think .

Goku - Dragon Ball Z
Because he is a great hero,he is happy and he has a great additude.

Ichigo - Bleach
I've only watched a couple of episodes of Bleach but from what I can tell,he is a great hero.

The main character from "Chaos Head" mainly because he remains a prick right until the end :P

"I don't care about the world being destroyed, im only doing this for what I want!"

Ah ... so awesome.

I'm particularly fond of Sugisaki Ken from Seitokai no Ichizon. This guy got most of his character development done before the show even started. He's always going on and on about the HAREM ENDING, but once that has been seen through, here is a hardworking young man whose goal in life is to make all those he cares for in life happy. I highly respect that. The development he went through to get to where he is was highly respectable as well. Those Purple black striped pants are pretty cool too.

I haven't finished this series yet but i agree he's great.

-Jaden Yuki (Yu-Gi-Oh! GX; I like his deck and how his personality changed throughout the series)
-Ichigo Kurosaki (Bleach; I like his somehow hot-headed personality, and how he cared for Rukia in the first season)

Out of those I'm familiar with, Edward Elric from FMA takes this one. You can really feel all that he goes through, and see him grow, learn, and push his way up through it all, plus you care about him and want him to succeed. The supporting cast really helps him shine, too. That pretty much sums up for me what a good lead character should be, and Ed just does it the best IMO.

Luffy is a badass, so him.

If not Kyon from Suzumiya was a pretty funny dude, hes cool too.
