The only things better are the visuals and the expanded Pokedex. End of. The addition of EVs renders all of your Pokemon trained throughout your adventure worthless for competitive fights, and the games in general just don't seem that revolutionary. Not half as addictive as the GBC games if you ask me.
Some of the new monsters are also a bit [ugh], even though there are some nice additions to go with them. Too much emphasis has gone on legendary monsters as well. I remember the days of Red/Blue when you had three legendary birds and a super powerful genetically enhanced Pokemon to capture. They were totally unique, which made them a pleasure to hunt down and claim for your own.
Now though, we have what, 8 legendary monsters to find? 3 of which (Regis) having the most unoriginal names ever, 2 (Latios/Latias) being almost exact copies sprite-wise, and 3 mega-Pokemon (Groudon/Kyogre/Rayquaza). Catching them all becomes tiresome, and netting them is nowhere near as satisfying as bagging Lugia, for example.
Bleh, don't get me wrong. They're great games. Just not compared to the originals.
