Bulba... something.

    Having been brought up a few times already in the current Poké-Poll of the Week, a few people have been left wondering, what exactly are Bulbasaur and family based off of? Arguments could be made for a frog, a dinosaur, some sort of reptile, or if it's German name is to be belived (Bisasam), it could be a muskrat.

    So simply put, what exactly do you think a Bulbasaur is? And are there any other Pokemon's origins you aren't quite sure of?
     
    I've always seen it as some dinosaur, because of the '-saur' in the name. But with that poll, I gave it a closer inspection and I must admit, they do look like some giant toad with a seed/flower on their back. I don't think there's any reptile showing more resemblance actually, making the name a bit misleading.
     
    for some reason i thought it was confirmed a dinosaur. i always thought it was based off a plant eating dinosaur like triceratops, but made literally into a plant.
     
    I think it's a carnivorous plant. Its 'brain' and most of its organs are inside its bulb and it merely controls a frog/dinosaur/lizard body that it probably picked up or killed somewhere.
     
    Lets take a look at the names:
    Bulbasaur: Bulb and saur, saur meaning reptile
    Ivysaur: Ivy and saur
    Venusaur: Venus for venus fly trap or Venom for poison, and saur
    So its a reptile, but not only for "saur" at the end of its name. Many pokedex entries state the hours long it stays in the sun taking in sunlight. This means its unlikley its a frog, as they need to be constantly humid. This is also a caracteristic of lizards, as they bathe in sunlight because they are cold bloded and need the sun for heat. lastly, bulbasaur red and blue dex description:"A strange seed was planted on its back at birth. The plant sprouts and grows with this Pokémon." With this we can conclude the bulbasaur line is a reptile living in symbiosis with a plant.

    But this brings up another question. What exactly was bulbasaur before the seed was planted? What happens if a bulbasaur dosent get a seed upon birth?
    My best awnser is helioptile. There arent exactly tons of lizards but two things make helio more probable:
    1:They also absorb solar energy, exept to produce electricity.
    2:They are slightly bipedal, and bulbasaur can stand on two legs, because:
    Ivysaur red and blue dex entry:"When the bulb on its back grows large, it appears to lose the ability to stand on its hind legs."
    And implies that bulbasaur can stand on its hind legs.
     
    The Bulbasaur family, as the name indicates, are reptiles, not amphibians. Therefore they're not and never were frogs/toads/etc...
     
    I think that bulbasaur is a herbivorous reptile, which reminds me of a dinosaur with a flower on its back. The flower on the "saur" family back gives them energy through photosynthesis, and they eat plants. That's what I always thought, it makes more sense than them being an amphibian. I see a Pokemon like the squirtle family being an amphibian.
