Sorry guys I just started. All my cards are new, 2016, but I wanted to add a Item card, hypnotic laser 2013, to my battle deck. Is this legal? I didn't know if you can mix generations. Thanks.

Depends on your format. If you are playing Standard (what is played in most tournaments) you can not, because Hypnotoxic Laser is not in the Standard format. If playing Expanded, go ahead.

I was going to try and starting attending local battles at a card shop. I'm not sure how they play yet.

You'll have to ask your local shop for their own rules, all varry. For the most part it's anything newer than Black and White is legal. (in my area at least)

Some times they'll have "Casual Player Days" where anything all the way back to Base Set 1 is legal.

But yeah, for the most part I just avoid picking up any cards Black and White or older.

Its not legal in standard play which is what any official league will be running. Its useable in expanded which some places will run alongside standard.
