Hey there, I recently got a Mac and was going to move my files from Windows over to this machine, (my laptop recently died showing a black screen whenever it got past the windows xp loading screen) however when I clicked on the hard drive to view the files all I get is this:
[PokeCommunity.com] Can't view Windows' files and folders on Mac

Is there a way to view the files or is it all protected or is it simply corrupted?
Thanks for your help!
(I am using the windows hard drive and a disc enclosure to get information)

Try downloading the HiddenFiles widget here this will allow you to toggle hidden files and folder on and off at will.

You could also use the Disk Utility application (usually located in Applications/Utilities) to see if there is a partition of the drive that simply isn't mounting that has your files on it.

If your files still don't show up then you probably have a corrupted disc. (you could always boot into an Ubuntu Live CD to see if Linux can see the files if Mac can't, just to make sure the disc isn't corrupted.)

A simple soultion to remove the hardrive, connect it in to an external housing and then plug it in via USB, you can then use convenxhnal recovery options + after you have the data you also gain a handy external drive :) but I recommend formatting the entire drive before you use it after getting your data off it.

The bits bolded and italicised didn't work and I'm still not seeing the files.

EDIT-Booted in Ubuntu nothing there, disk is corrupted, thanks very much for your help anyways guys.

Amusing you have access to a windows based OS (or run it off the mac) try a piece of software called data doc (know it sounds generic) and I'm guessing you reconse it just pulls that data raw strat off the drive bypassing index corruptions and also any corrupted sectors that might knock other software in to stoping mid recovery. If the live disk doesn't work will see if I can dig through my files and find out where I got it form original.

ps, sorry about earlier, it never showed your print screen on the mobile version :S

Failing that Recuva is always fun to try.

I have a windows and a mac, and if you're using your drive, it's probably because the drive is NTFS which means you wont be able to access it on the mac. I'm not 100% sure if this is the case with you because I'm not that tecchie.. but you may need to put all your files on another windows computer, reformat your drive so that it's FAT32 format, put them back on, and then transfer them over to your mac.. but files bigger than 4gb wont be able to write properly to mac.. that's the only downfall to FAT32 at the moment :/
I think it will show if you right click your drive and check the properties.. it'll show you what format your drive is.

If this isn't the issue.. then sorry but I don't really know what else it could be. I'm also still running tiger so this could be a new OS thing maybe?
Either way good luck!

Hmm... I'm not sure about that.

You can read NTFS on Mac, just not write to it (unless you install some third-party drivers). So, one should be able to read a NTFS drive and copy its contents.

Try accessing the drive on another Windows setup if you can. Just to determine if there's anything there or not.
