Challenges 2011 - What do YOU want to see?

That kind of stuff could just be your own personal twist. It doesn't have to be specified in the rules of the challenge, for example, I could say "I'm going to do a Fire monotype in Sapphire, but to make it a little more interesting, I'm not going to use the Flamethrower TM" or something along those lines. There's really a lot we could add to our challenges without them being specified in the thread. I think we forget that sometimes. There doesn't have to be a thread on this forum for us to challenge ourselves in game, you know. I never had threads back when I was bored during the summer, I just thought "hey, I should play Ruby and only use grass types, that'll be interesting." Didn't even know that had a name, haha.

They were talking about extra-hard challenges or those that require no creativity, just catch x Pokemon and train it to y level and give it m,n,b and v moves. The Red Challenge failed because of that, simply because people did not want to complete a challenge with the same Pokemon as the others.

I read challenge updates because they're interesting and I can see other people doing the same challenge as me, but with different Pokemon. I always read mondays's updates because they're interesting, and I know he is a better challenger than me. I want to learn from him.

Challenges are actually a way to see how skilled we are. Maybe some people are not skilled, but through learning they'll know how careful they have to be while nuzlocking, what are the best Pokemon to use for a monotype, and the sorts. It's kinda like competitive battling, where you have to study to win. But here you study while playing.

Sorry for going away form the subject. I just wrote brainlessly. Q_Q

I actually agree with looking at updates. I am actually astonished at what PorygonZ does in his challenges. I wish he posted more info so I knew how he does some of the stuff he does to get his Pokemon so high (trades, maybe?). He also never posts screenshots, either.

w/e.

I would like things to be a little bit more organized, and thread owners to be alot more active. If your not going to be active, why make the thread. Sure I know I'm one of them but I will try to be more active as well.

Also, please if you finish, PM or VM the Thread Owner. Because there's people who don't have the time to check the thread for people who finish.

Exactly how I feel. It's very evident in the Solo runs section. People have been beating it with PLs and Starters, its very dull. I loved when people would join using weak or useless pokemon. Like my Igglybuff a long time back. My Ditto run failed, though, because I found out Ditto copies the exact same stats, not just Base Stats. That's insane, man. Some one else could try it for me, though.

The only reason I don't update like every day is that I own/co own 3 of the most popular Challenges. I'm trying to update once every two weeks now, though.

And yes, I agree. If everyone VM'd me it would be so much easier on my part. However, we all know not everyone will do that, so I'd still have to check for that one person. And that completely takes away the whole point.

To whoever was talking about being interested in looking at the updates: The only reason that I don't make more interesting updates is that a lot of the time I'm too fast for the challenge. Especially for first two gens. I've tried playing through a gym and then updating everything, but when it's only going to be 10 minutes tops til the next gym is done, I usually just go for that.

ALSO: I don't want to let us forget about it since I thought it was such a good idea. We need to do the races and things that we once mentioned. Syd, please move this to the top of your list.

Yes, yes. We kinda missed our chance for a New Years event though, unless we run one late. But obviously I can't host all of them, and suggestions would be very much appreciated for events. I reckon our first event will be in February around Valentine's Day. Depending on what the event we're running is (speed runs, theme teams, etc) will depend on the time span of the event of course. So yeah, if anyone wants to run some ideas for next month, just drop me a PM.

And about that VM/PM the thread owner, that's what I do when I host a challenge. I'm fine with looking to make sure the sign ups are going well, but I just don't feel like sitting there and updating a challengers list. I would much rather just list champions, cause you know, a lot of people drop out without saying anything (I do it all the time actually, lol) and that'd get annoying. But I mean, that's just my preference. If you like having a list of challengers, then that's fine too.

What I did (and am trying to get back in the habit of doing) is update once every other week. On the update that is not in the middle of the month, I delete everyone from the challenger list if they haven't posted in a month. I think that's fair, and they've probably forgotten about it. If they would take offense to their name being removed, then they really do care about the challenge, so I'll just put their name back on. Le gasp.

We need more creativity on the challenges, I'm tired of seeing challenges that are either:

A) There's so much rules to the challenge that everyone basically has the same team (Red Challenge per say)

B) The challenge is to basic / bland, that it doesn't feel like a challenge (Color, Anime, Manga)

C) Where the poster bellow says your team layout , because they either make it too hard (lol Magikarp) or to easy. (Scramble, Random)

We need more enjoyable challenges like Mono-Types and Nuzlocke.

Also I hate it when in the CI&D the same exact ideas occur. Like seriously, I can't go a week without seeing someone mentioning "lets revive this", "what happend to this".

I mean, I love how much you love your challenges but when something is old / locked and you revive it again, it's going to fall like the first thread. Thats why I don't really particapate in challenges anymore because instead of new challenges, we get old challenges (Re-using challenges is more Copy + Paste than Anime Fillers)

/rant

Just because there are challenges that lack creativity it doesn't make them less of a challenge. For manga/anime/color, it depends on which character/what color you choose, and the team you decide to go with. Make your monotypes NFE runs. Something. Add your own spice. Like I said, just cause it's not specified in the thread doesn't mean you can't add your own elements.

And I don't find anything wrong with bringing back an old challenge idea. My first PC challenge was the mono-type/gen/duo. I found it pretty creative and a fun challenge. Heck, I even chose to do grass types. Tons of fun. I'd bring that back, but I don't feel like completing it again. It's not always a matter of "oh that challenge was bad" that causes them to become inactive, though. And challenges aren't like music, you know. Somewhere along the lines, things are going to be rehashed. There can't always be a new fresh idea. Heck, even the infinite beats that go in songs get redone. I don't know what I'm getting at anymore. lol

I guess it's just me thinking it huh?

I'm not saying that Old Challenges being brought back is bad. I'm saying that when you're a User who has done every challenge on the board at least once, (yes, I have, undocumented though, but I still did) you kind of thrive for new ideas. Not just people bring back the old ones. Because since I'm not doing challenges anymore (on this Forum) I kind of feel like I'm not particapating. Mainly because I'm a "Challenge Regular."

@ Chaos

I do indeed want more creativity.

A) I don't like challenges that have a bunch of rules, but I don't necessarily think its bad to use the same team. What are you supposed to do for solo challenges if someone has the Pokemon you really want to use. Normally, people just suck it up and sort of turn it into a competition. But I agree, the Red Challenge should probably be done on your own time if you want to do it.

B) That's how every challenge feels to me. They might have one or two tough parts (like beating Claire in HGSS with my water monotype team) but once I get past that part, I can usually finish a huge chunk in like an hour tops (or if its any challenge on R/B i could just finish it in an hour tops). Anyways, I've made my own challenge. Originally I was going to do all the challenges listed in my sig, but now I'm just doing all the monotypes to start, and I might do all the solos on RB after that. Like Syd said, you have to make your own interesting twists on challenges you do.

C) I'll agree on this one. I don't really like where someone else gives me a team, because most of the time, they make it too easy. I guess they're too scared of making it too hard. Also, I've seen someone give restrictions on a Pachirisu that were like longer than this post. It was ridiculous.

I feel that under certain circumstances, bringing back an old challenge can be a good thing. For a while, back in the day before all the montypes/solos were combined into single threads, one generation of monotypes might disappear for a while. And then I would revive it. By the time we combined all the monotypes, I think I owned all of them other than the HG/SS one and the Ultimate. About the same for solos; I think I only originally started maybe 2 of the solo challenges. However, most of the challenges shouldn't be brought back. If a lot of people want it (like the scramble) then it probably should, but if you're the only one who wants the *pulls random challenge from my sig that I don't remember* Pet challenge, then you should just do it yourself.

If you feel you're not participating and want to, then stick to the Nuzzys and Monotypes. I don't think you've done them all. I used to do like 2 monotypes, then a challenge I didn't think I'd like (because I was trying to do them all). Maybe you should try that. There's not that many now (I know I can only see one page worth).

My suggestion: The most ridiculously hard challenge of all time, something that combines all regions (Like an ultimate challenge) but is so INSANELY DIFFICULT it leave kids crying home to their mama because waahhhh waaahhh the challenge is too hard I cant beat it!! Wahhhh!

I'm not sure what would make a challenge that hard, but it'd be cool.

I would very much enjoy that challenge. However, I don't think many would. Maybe we could do something like that for one of the board competitions. I'm thinking the regulars might sign up for that, and it could be a sort of race.

Well, in my mind, a challenge that hard wouldn't be something someone would enjoy per say, but it'd be so difficult that being able to complete it at all would command some respect. I mean it is a challenge, the idea is that it's really... challenging :D The Challenging Challenge.

I like the idea of it being a race too. I think I need to put some thought into this :o

I originally was planning on doing something like having a marathon by myself to catch every Pokemon in every generation (like in Blue, Silver, Sapphire, and Diamond). You could incorporate that into it. As well as winning master ranks in every contest, defeating every battle frontier, basically just completing all the games. I think that would be pretty challenging.

Also, I think that if we want to discuss actual challenges,we should move this to the CI&D. Pretty sure this is more for not..that...stuff.

You know Myrrh you make a point. So for this New Year Resolution (for PC) I'm going to be the Nuzlocke Challenger Regular (you know the one who does it the most) with Comics and everything.

And that Challenge Challenge sounds good to.

I'm thinking of going back into challenges, as well. Also making that "Interesting and Educative? (lol) Update". I'm trying to play on actual cartridges so I don't succumb to using Spacebar... /fail.

Anyways... about races... I wouldn't know how it would turn out. Nuzlocke Speedruns, stuff like that, or just a flash, and thoughtless Alpha Fan ? /sortof

Well, all I'm going to say is that we probably should get this done now, before I finish Alpha Fan. Because then it wouldn't be fun anymore.
