Classics

For me, a 'classic' game has to be pretty old.
I wouldn't consider a game released a year or two ago to be a 'classic'.

Games from my youth I would consider classics, like Dragon Warrior Monsters. Yes, I do mean Warrior, since the game was released before the legal spat.

Agreed. I don't get why most people are responding with games that aren't even a decade old in this thread >_> Those aren't classics, kids. They're just Player's Choice games.

Original Tetris; that's where it's at. Mmhmm.
I don't consider it a classic, but I had a ton of fun playing Blades of Steel for the NES.

Just because they're not 10 years old doesn't bar them from being a classic game in some peoples definition, though. Part of being classic is having a lot of nostalgia, which is why I have Pokemon Colosseum and Sapphire in my list of classics. There are some members here that aren't even a decade old, or barely more than a decade old anyway. But I do have to say, looking at the N64 games and doing the math on their release dates, I can't believe some of these are over ten years old now. I was only 5 or 6 (hell, I don't even know) when the N64 was released, so now I'm feeling old, even though I was raised on NES and SNES. Hm.

Looking at my list now, I'm wondering how I forgot Red and Silver. Silly me. And Dr. Mario and Tetris, now that Kura mentioned it. Chill music<3

To me it has to be at least two generations old. Nothing from the current generation. Anything inbetween would be a "modern classic".

And, should be dripping in nostalgia for myself.

A classic game to me is a game that is outdated software wise, but not at all game play wise. You know, an older game that you still enjoy playing more than most of the new, pretty, sparkly games. Something that really stood out and paved a way for a new type of gaming is what I would call a game that deserves the title of "Classic." It can't just be old.

The first games that come to mind for me are:
Super Mario Bros. - Nintendo Entertainment System
Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles - Sega Genesis
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Nintendo 64
Pokemon Red Version, Pokemon Blue Version, Pokemon Silver Version, Pokemon Gold Version - Game Boy Color

Of course there is loads more, but these are some examples I would use from my childhood. :]

I think I would consider a classic game to be one that never really ages, in that it was so good during its time in the past that it continues to be good for future gamers. A game that can be picked up years after its prime and still be fun, even if new technology shows the game to be perhaps lacking in elements, because it is just so genuinely .. classic.

One definition of "classic" on dictionary.com says "of enduring interest, quality, or style" and I think that's a good summary. A classic game is one that endures; it lasts.

3 games that instantly ring classic to me just because they are ones I remember most from my early gaming are Super Smash Bros. N64, Mario Kart, and GoldenEye 007. So they aren't that old, but I'll always see them as classics in my own mind.
