In need of some action? Why not battle with your DAEMON and compete in the ACID Arena! Not only does your DAEMON level up, but players also battle for exclusive in-game items, discounts at your favourite stores and real-world prize money! Bored? Take your friends on an adventure into dense rainforests and bubbling volcanoes as you explore the world of CLOUD. Treasure hunters can score booty from places like the bottom of the ocean to the mountain summits and now, introducing the new DUNGEON MASTER feature, members can turn CLOUD into a real-time RPG! Battle monsters to level up your DAEMON, defeat monsters to find loot and create weapons and armour which can be used in the ACID arena! the world of CLOUD​

a brief history

CLOUD (雲 Kumo) was created by Mamoru Hosoda, a computer programming graduate from the Tokyo Institute of Technology with colleagues Masayuki Miyaji, Hiroyuki Imaishi and Kazuki Akane, and launched on December 21st, 2002 as a social networking site. Originally, the site was only available to Japanese high schools, colleges and universities but after its unexpected popularity which resulted in the site's crash due to traffic a week after its launch, it was opened to the public on May 15th, 2003. Its ability to connect to bring people together despite the cultural boundaries appealed to the masses and by the end of 2004, CLOUD celebrated the registration of its one millionth member.

On its 100 million member milestone in January of 2008, CLOUD evolved from a site to a universe, opening itself as a digital world which members could roam and explore, with more user-friendly options and made accessible and usable for members of all ages.

Since its launch in 2002, CLOUD has never been successfully hacked or broken into, though has suffered its fair share of crashes thanks to traffic. CLOUD has scheduled downtime every season for two days and has done so since its launch, with the exception of downtime for preparation of special events, such as Christmas, New Years or Anniversary celebrations.

Currently, up-to-date users of CLOUD are running v6.65.

the CLOUD universe

Because CLOUD itself is an entire world, it is separated into several different districts, each specifically designed for different uses and activities.

the capital - CIRRUS

Spoiler:

CIRRUS is located in the very centre of CLOUD and the most popular spot, hosting the online shopping mall known as CLOUDLAND and the ACID arena. All new members start with their DAEMON in one of the friendly online lobbies inside CLOUDLAND and may explore from there. Knocked out players from anywhere in the CLOUD universe also respawn here. The lounge is a bustling social hotspot where many members meet up to socialise and communicate.

The ACID arena hosts a number of sports and battles, ranging from harmless friendly sparring to fierce competitions where DAEMONs seemingly fight to the death for the chance to win exclusive items, credits and real-life money and enter the CLOUD hall of fame. Though the battles seem to be the most popular, the ACID arena also holds many sporting competitions, including tennis, basketball, baseball and even placid sports like chess.

CLOUDLAND holds almost every single store known to man with the option of buying for yourself or your DAEMON. In some instances, shops offer the option to cross buy so you and your DAEMON can look fabulous together. As CLOUDLAND is the default location for all members, you can also access the main interface here, allowing you to change account options, customise your main profile page and DAEMON, update your details and more.

As CLOUDLAND is the centre of CLOUD, it also has a teleportation service which sends DAEMONs across the globe instantly at the click of a button. CIRRUS was also the first area to be opened to the public at the launch of the universe world in January of 2008.

the plains - RAIN

Spoiler:

RAIN is a large open space, created specifically for levelling up characters on low to mid level monsters. RAIN is also a good foraging space where members can find common items and synthesise them with other items to make slightly rarer items. Many members, especially lower levelled ones, meet up here to relax or grind. Be wary; the further into RAIN you go, the higher level the monsters go.

In the centre of RAIN lies a small town called SHOWER and marketplace, used for selling items. Though not as popular as STORM's city of MIST, the town consists of mainly NPCs selling default items. Many members check here every now and again as occasionally, the vendors sell very rare items at ridiculously cheap prices. It's a random thing so most members who do chance upon them are lower levelled ones with a lot of luck.

Two dungeons make their homes in RAIN; SNOW, a white wonderland which ascends up a small mountain and DUST, a desert which leads onto a dark and wet cavern. Each 'floor' of a dungeon is practically a maze and even in a low-level dungeon such as SNOW or DUST needs several hours to get through. At the end of each floor lies a mini-boss and at the end of the dungeon, a mega-boss. By clearing a dungeon, you are given exclusive items as a prize and sometimes on the off chance, a secret item. The amount of floors in a dungeon differs every time so it's hard to predict how long one can be in a dungeon. The lowest amount of floors recorded is 1 and the highest is 1046. It's all random!

the wilderness - STORM

Spoiler:

STORM is the a Player vs Player (PvP) area boasting highly dense rainforests, deep caves and maze-like dungeons. Not only is this a PvP area where players can attack each other, but monsters spawn inside the dungeon areas, growing in level the higher or lower a dungeon goes. There are four dungeons which exist in STORM: BLIZZARD, a rough, mountainous area which grows colder and harder to see the more floors are progressed, HAIL, a thick rainforest which slowly gives more damage the more floors are progressed, SANDSTORM, a desert-turned-volcano which slowly gives more damage, becomes hotter and becomes harder to see the more floors are progressed and FOG, a dark cave which becomes harder to see the more floors are progressed. These dungeons are no cake walks and it is highly suggested to bring a party of players to help defeat the monsters inside them. Bringing other players though also brings the risk of friendly fire, griefing or theft whilst exploring.

STORM also has a city known as MIST located away from the dungeons where members can craft items using loot and spoils as well as a NPC run market and a DAEMON run market. The two are next to each other and are usually bustling with DUNGEON MASTER players, selling off rare items to other DAEMONS.

As CIRRUS holds the official ACID arena for sponsored battles and sports, MIST has an unofficial arena, known as the BASE arena, for a different sort of battling. Many treat this arena as a 'cockfight' arena, where players can bet on others and the rules are more lax than its official counterpart. As STORM is a PvP area, battles here result in defeat and DAEMONs armour is damaged, are forced to drop half their held coin and are sent back to the CIRRUS lounges for respawn.

STORM is a dangerous area and is not for new players or the weak hearted.

the downtown - ALTO (18+ area)

ALTO is where the business sides of things take place, holding an internal stock market for companies which work both inside and outside of CLOUD. Many who work for CLOUD or are an entrepreneur hosting their business through CLOUD have their DAEMON use the facilities here. Members have the opportunity to work for CLOUD depending on their real-life skills. CLOUD is constantly looking for programmers who are willing to re-write old coding, administration to take care of digital filing, cleaning and answering calls and mathematicians to test the decryption code and redevelop it, if necessary.

ALTO also hosts the famous casino known as the LIGHTNING dome where members can enjoy games such as roulette, black jack or poker and can bet CLOUD credits or real money and play against other members. Exclusive items can also be won through these casino games and championships, similar to the ACID arena, are held and can attract an audience in the thousands.

ALTO is an 18+ area only and therefore members who are under 18 years are forbidden to enter.

popular guilds within CLOUD

DAEMONHEAD (leader: revlis) 489 563 active members

Daemonhead is the most populated guild in CLOUD, almost reaching 500 000 active members. Daemonhead exists mainly to form easy parties when taking on dungeons. Though revelled to be one of the best fighters around, revlis, whose DAEMON is a bipedal, silver panther, is rarely seen by normal members. The only ones who see him on frequent occasions are his subordinates.​

CLOUD NINE (leader: SUPERulul) 150 251 active members

Cloud Nine is a market guild, working in collecting rare items and selling them off for outrageous prices. If a DAEMON is in a marketplace selling off rare and exclusive items, you can be sure its a member of Cloud Nine. The guild works more as a place of employment than a guild, as members earn commission from items. SUPERulul, whose DAEMON is a cyborg, pink rabbit is said to deal with thieves herself, boasting a kick which can reduce even a high level veteran's health down to zero. SUPERulul is also known as the richest member in CLOUD.​

THE SENATE (leader: CaPTAINkickass) 190 589 active members

The Senate is a fighters guild who focus on levelling up their DAEMONs, building skills and techniques for fighting in either the ACID arena or the BASE arena. They also promote betting and usually are bookmarkers or bookies before a fight starts. Their leader, CaPTAINkickass, whose DAEMON is a humanoid pig, is the current champion of the BASE arena (but surprisingly not the ACID arena) and an exceptionally harsh trainer, but the best. Though he prefers not to, CaPTAINkickass is an exceptional DUNGEON MASTER, when he decides to play.​

CUSHIONS (leaders: godspelledbackward & SWEETmayonnaise) 423 875 active members

Cushions is a social guild which often takes in members new to CLOUD. Though they don't battle much (sometimes, depending on the occasion), their guild events usually consist of going to CLOUDLANDS to shop together, seeing an event together, watching movies together or just hanging out in CLOUDLANDS lounge. godspelledbackward, whose DAEMON is a humanish-dog-centaur, and SWEETmayonnaise, whose DAEMON is a humanish-cat-centaur are known as a couple and are considered very approachable and the friendliest members in CLOUD. Cushions is also most known for their IRL events, which can attract media attention and have broken a few records of most known people in one area.​

T H E ☠ P I R A T E S

T H E ☠ P I R A T E S is a guild made for people who lust for treasure and plunder, while getting all they can drink. This guild's primary focus is to treasure hunt for the most prodigious valuables they can muster - from money to extremely rare items. They even travel to lands that people would not normally be foolish enough to enter; from unexplored charters, to the most barren and hostile lands. Lack of these particular lands are a problem, but T H E ☠ P I R A T E S will push on until they have explored all the lands they can muster up. On certain days, older members of T H E ☠ P I R A T E S travel to the downtown - ALTO to play on the famous casino; their favourite games includes blackjack, the roulette, and the casino slots. Not just anyone can join though - only those who are cunning, yet strong and devious enough are the only ones made to join this particular guild. However, if one does fit these descriptions, then it doesn't matter how old you are - prepare for a guild full of life, and excitement!​

AltoMeteor (leader: Skyflare X) 1000 members

AltoMeteor isn't exactly your average guild. Made up of astronomy buffs and dungeon explorers, for some reason AltoMeteor is an awesome mix. They tend to explore dungeons in RAIN or STORM, mostly RAIN. However, some of the higher level members (about 10%) tend to stay in STORM, and sometimes ALTO. The name of the guild is based on the name of the founder, Meteoralto, who is now mysteriously inactive, with his second in command, Skyflare X, taking over in his place.

Alto Meteor usually meets up to see live feeds of astral events, like a meteor shower or space shuttle launches, because they love space. In fact, their motto is "We love space! And battles!" The guild is relatively small, only about 1000 members, prompting many of their members to team up with other guilds to help out.​

CLOUD and you​

It is December of 2012 and like every other person on the globe, you have a unique DAEMON and a CLOUD account. Maybe it's something you check every now and again or maybe you live and breathe CLOUD but whatever it is, it's something that has definitely become part of your daily life. Actually, you can't really remember how you connected with your friends without it.

This year is CLOUD's 10th anniversary and several emails and announcements have confirmed that they are doing something special to commemorate the occasion. In fact, they've been more specific than that:

"On the first minute of 21st of December, 2012 (JST), CLOUD will revolutionise. Make sure you're online before then to claim rare anniversary items and to catch the live screening of the special announcement. We hope to see you then!"​

On the build up to the 21st, rumours have been bouncing around what the announcement could be, both online and offline. In fact, it made national news. You, as a CLOUD member, are probably excited about the announcement too and have been keeping up-to-date with all the theories going around. One of the weirdest ones you've heard is that if you log in between 00:00 and 00:01 (JST) a week before the announcement, you'll get to see a sneak peek of what it could be. Since you're pretty game and can't wait to see what this announcement will be, you give it a shot.

As soon as you log in, you can't see anything on your screen. Then, the room lights up and you can see that you must be inside one of the sports arenas in the grandstands, which is slowly filling up with other players who also wanted to test the rumour. There's gotta be hundreds of thousands of player present, perhaps even millions. It's hard to tell. There's a digital timer hovering in the middle of the arena and when it counts to zero, it's 00:01 (JST) and the lights dim. One more player logs in, appearing directly in the center of the arena. You've never seen the DAEMON (a large, red, bipedal dragon in rare looking robes) or heard of this player's username before but by the looks of them, they seem very important. The stadium goes quiet and the DAEMON speaks:

"Greetings, players! My real name is not important, but you may call be by my username, ICARUS. As you may already know, the tenth year anniversary of CLOUD will soon be here. Many have been excited about the news of a 'revolution' and your enthusiasm is not in vain. Tonight's announcement grants all users present a secret item and a hint at what the anniversary celebrations will be."​

At the mention of a secret item, you are sent a message from the user ICARUS with one item attached; a silver key with your username etched into the side. The teeth of the key seem individual to you as a quick glance to either side of you confirms that the person next to you has a slightly different key.

"CLOUD has always affected our lives in a positive way and it's time to take the online experience to the real world. Or is it time to take it the other way around? It really depends on how you use CLOUD. Whatever the case, this new revolution will change the way you perceive the world around you, both on and offline. That is all I will reveal. Have a nice morning, day, night and evening."​

ICARUS logs out and you too are forced back to the login screen.

In the morning, class is not really that noisy, really calm like water flow. Only some of the student waiting for the teacher in the class, ah! That is our main character of the story, Hanami Kurosawa! She sat at an old chair with a tired look face.
"Hanami! Ohaiyo*!" Another student, handsome one, is now in front of Hanami with a big smile. Hanami look at that student and blush for some reason, Hanami then answer the student,
"Ohaiyo, Hakuba-kun!"
The two now smile and blush each other, but they forcefully talking about something..
"So...What about that kissed?" Hakuba starting a conversation, Hanami looks like had a pale because Hakuba talking about that
"Nooo! He just kissed me right away!! eeeh....Gomen*" Hanami talking quickly to make Hakuba not understand, but then...Hakuba kiss her right away!

I feel the need to ask for my character's sake; what is the social reaction to Cloud? Thoughts on it from Religions, the government, etc. Seems like the myriad of mythological references and the social impact it's had are things to take note of.
