Two similar bands...who do you like better?

To me its a toss up the both kick, I'd love to see them both in a concert...But I'm thinking I like Coldplay a tad bit more.

    Und du?(And you?)

I'm not a big fan of either of them, but U2 has some pretty radical stuff for their time, so has to be them.

You made me temporarily get out of my leave of absence... =O

    Coldplay or U2?

    let's see:
U2 has something called "The Joshua Tree" and "Achtung Baby"
Coldplay only has one decent album, one above average album, and one disappointing album (Parachutes, AROBTTH, X&Y, respectively).

Coldplay is a cheap immitation of U2 (oftenly criticized by critics because of it)
    U2 make their own genre

U2 dares to change their genre radically (from post punk to blues to electronica...)
Coldplay bleakly follows (from soft melorock to synthesizers, hardly any leap, more like a step)

    U2 has a definite sound
    Coldplay doesn't quite

U2 was is the original Live Aid, nuff said

    So it's U2 for me... =D

U2 until now (they're coming out with a Hip Hop album. I can't forgive them...). However, I really dislike Coldplay.

Coldplay, like the sound better, like the lyrics better, the music just suits me more. U2 is an okay band, but not really my favorite. Comparing them, Coldplay hasn't been out in the limelight nearly as long as U2, so it's easy to say one has better albums. U2 has a LOT more to work with than Coldplay does at the moment(Coldplay-'96, U2 -'76). At a time, U2 were pioneers, I don't see it as such anymore, they're just another good band. Music for me doesn't have to be groundbreaking for me to like it, it just has to have a good music, which I consider Coldplay to be. Not to say that U2 is bad, but lately their stuff hasn't been the greatest.

I like that coldplay doesn't have a definite sound. It would get boring after a while, that's part of the reason I lost interest with U2 for some time. Their music wasn't doing anything for me, with Coldplay I expect different things more often than I do with other bands. And they're pretty good at delivering it. It's unfair to compare them album wise, U2 has so many more years on Coldplay. It's easy to say U2 has more good albums than Coldplay has, their number of good albums is probably more than Coldplay's total number of albums to begin with.

Yeah, Coldplay might be considered a cheap U2 imitation, but you've got to admit that they own some pretty powerful songs. Besides, even though I'm a BIG U2 fan, this is a bit unfair for Coldplay since U2 have been making albums waaaay before Coldplay existed. So I'll divide the question:

    Is U2 better than Coldplay?
Achtoong Beybee, Joshua Tree, Rattle and Hum, and Unforgettable Fire U2 is definitely better than Coldplay in every single way. Period.

Is actual U2 better than actual Coldplay?
I really think that today's U2 IS NOT better than Coldplay (And very probably, future U2 will not be either). A bitter truth, tough not the whole story, is that U2 is only succesful in these days because of their old-band veteran pro whatever fame. Though HTDAAB is an awesome, well structured album, I don't think it would have been as popular if they were a new band.

Even though this is only my opinion. I could be horribly wrong. =)

    Nutting mur to say...

    EDIT

Uh, I think Niko meant that U2 has their own *signature* sound: When you hear them, doing either Electronica, post-punk, rock, or irish country, you know it's U2; Coldplay doesn't exactly have a definite sound like them.. Now, you're talking about a definite MUSIC genre/style, I'd say that Coldplay doesn't have it, and U2 doesn't either because they're always changing their music genres since circa 1991...

Its very tough for me xD But I lean towards Coldplay, I like their sound better and I like the lyrics to their songs better than U2 IMO

Nah, I got it. I'm weird like that though, I like it when a band sounds different, only if it's good though. I wouldn't like it if they sounded...say like a hard metal band, not into that music, so that type of different would suck. But when they're signature sound is different, I'm drawn to that music.

    I prefer U2.

Coldplay is a fairly recent band, and the members have been associated to an extent with charity events such as Live 8. However, U2 has done that and more; Sonny Bono has even been nominated for a Nobel Prize. U2 has been around for more than twenty years now and even today its first hits, including Pride, New Year's Day, I Will Follow, Where the Streets Have No Name, and Desire, are popular among people at my age and are comparable to the hard rock produced today. The songs I mentioned were produced back in the 1980s (and are on the album The Best of 1980-1990, which is one of my most coveted albums) and I prefer them much over their recent hits, which are still somewhat good (although Beautiful Day is an exceptional re-rendering of their past potency). This band is one of those that are respected because they've produced such great music for a long time, alongside Duran Duran, Madonna, and INXS.

    Anyways... puuting up Coldplay against U2 would be the same as comparing Maná and Jimi Hendrix.... >>;

Of course if you're talking about their whole careers, U2 would always win. Even if they're now turning into crap. Coldplay will not overcome songs like Running To Stand Still, One, Ultraviolet Light or Sunday Bloody Sunday until they have a little more experience in their job... And this makes the whole thread to be based in a rhetorical question. Are the Foo Fighters better than Metallica? Are The White Stripes better than The Rolling Stones? Today, they might be, but yesterday? Uh oh, I won't bother to answer that.

Hmmm...I Like Them Both..But I Love Coldplay More...

Coldplay Just HAs So Many Good Song...

I can't stand either band's lead singers. Both having such gigantic egos it's not even funny.

I do however like both of their music, but I would have to go with Coldplay. I've had a lot more person experinces to their songs I guess, which kind of connects me to them more.

Tough question because i don't like any of 'em ;[
There's only one song i like off U2 and i have no favourites from Coldplay so i'll go towards U2

U2 have gotten boring. It's the same old arena rock formula over and over.
Coldplay are worse. Has no one noticed that Speed of Sound is Clocks, just without piano?

I choose Radiohead. Possibly the greatest band around today.

    ~Definitely Coldplay...I mean, I do like some of U2s songs, but I must also agree that they have gotten a bit boring after all this time...Let me also mention that I heard from someone that they're planning on creating a hip hop album oO; I don't know whether it's just rumours, but it's most likely sick to think that...oO;
And I must also add that I like Coldplay's sound better lately.

yeah, I've always enjoyed listening to clocks and noticed Speed of sound as clocks almost straight awy

I choose U2, their old stuff is simply amazing, and its my dads fault I'm hooked on them

However true that Clocks and the Speed of Sound sound alike they aren't the same...Speed of Sound sounds refined and its just overall better.

I mean if this was intentional or not I don't know but bands do it all the time...

I gotta go with Coldplay here. U2 doesn't do anything for me, personally. I'm pretty much in love with Coldplay's newest album, X & Y.
