easily gym battles I pretty much hate contests but everyone is entitled to their own opinion so ill leave it there.
im not talking about the game im talking about the anime....I like gym battles better. I'll watch contests but I suck a dressing up my pokemon XD
If I had to choose, I'd pick Gyms.
I mean, at least with Gyms, there's not any sex stereotypes going on. With Contests, well, they usually make it out to be that only girly girls/metrosexuals/homosexual guys can participate in them on a regular basis.
I mean, personally, I think it's insulting to girls (and to a gender-equality-advocator such as myself, it's insulting to me as well) to have it seem that way. I mean, it's bad enough that May and Dawn are treated like any other female is treated in an anime, but to have contests treated in this manner?! ugh.. It's like saying that Women shouldn't read or the only things women are good at are homemaking, making babies, and playing with dollies (These statements are supposed to be a negative, BTW).
They only participate in them on a regular basis because they are the only ones who WANT to participate in them on a regular basis.
Contest are girly, period. They're are like beauty pageants, which are girly.
I count 12 (confirmed) guys here who picked gyms, and a few who think contests are stupid. They're not showing mostly girls in contests because they are sexist, it's because most guys just are not genuinely interested in that sort of thing.
And HOW does showing off your pokemon's looks and using moves in a dazzling way teach women to to not read and have babies?
I would actually say Misty's part in the Princess vs. Princess promotes this as they actually fought for the prize of dolls, it was a girl's only contest and a Princess does nothing more than get married off to Princes to have babies and have to follow very strict moral and gender based standards.
Dawn and May are very adamant girls making a name for themselves in a contest of skill and beauty. :>
Oh, I choose Contests btw.
I personally don't care for flashy stuff (I don't think it reflects a person's true character, be it men or women). But having it done in such a way that Contests are the only thing that Girls should do, and not do anything else IS sexist.
I didn't say (or at least, I didn't mean) that it teaches that, I said that it's comparable to it, because girl viewers will think that's the ONLY thing girls should do and that they can never be anything else. It's like what Zoe said in Baby Blues due to societal standards and the media. She once said that she wanted to be a cheerleader because, and I quote: "Boys are Doctors and Girls are Cheerleaders".
It was a Girl's Only Festival. Besides, she at least was better than the OTHER contestants (who only participated in the contest due to Fiorello being there. I can never forget that day I watched it and I heard those nightmarish screams. The screams that made me and my family realize that they only promoted Sexist ordeals by having women being portrayed as loud, whiney and obnoxious.).
How is basically making flashy appearances "skill"? All I see is them basically making colors when attacking. In order for it to be true skill, they need to be able to actually come up with strategies and fight the enemy.
