I don't really understand what 3D has to do with anything but... yea, stick is used more in games which is WHY I can't understand that placement on Xbox controllers.
If you move with your thumb, why would you want to put it up into wtf position? =D
Because the main mode of moving a character has always been symmetrical with the face buttons. 2D games had the D-pad symmetrical with the buttons and 3D games that don't need 8 directions have an analog stick symmetrical to the face buttons. No one picks up an NES or SNES controller back in the days and keeps their left thumb down and their right thumb up. That's why Xbox and Nintendo controllers have the analog stick next to the face buttons, since the D-pad isn't used as often due to more 3D environment games.
