THERE ARE NO SYNONYMS FOR RENAME / REBRAND / etc. we Swear, we looked.

hi, all, i'm arrived to gather opinions by recommendation of LORD KLIPPY.

your favorite neighborhood section Culture & Media could undergo a couple of aesthetic changes that myself and my new mod partner maccrash believe to be "what's best" for the section. we want the focal point to become more stratified, as "culture" and "media" are two very, very broad words. when you see the Video Games section, you think "video games" and go straight into it, if that's what floats your boat. the same goes for Anime & Manga, Fan Clubs, and so forth, right? right!

so, we were thinking that "Film, Music, and Television" is a pretty straightforward name given the popular topics that occur in what is presently C&M. those are the most common topics, and as such the name seems to best reflect what people enjoy posting there the most. the purpose would be to make it easier for users to know what the section holds for them and what they can post there. simple as that.

do you guys agree that this would be one of the better choices for it? if you agree, a Like or a short post saying why will suffice. if you disagree, feel free to name off alternatives. i'm leaving this open ended, but keep in mind what i've expressed as what we think would be best for the section.

Can I add a little something here? Just a couple of thoughts, agreeing with you mostly

As you look down the list of forums, everything is very clear and tells users quite accurately what they'll find within the forum. Now this works well, because users can see exactly where they can find topics they want to talk about and so on. And I think for PC, especially the way PC is developing it's a professional looking site (mostly, then there's TT haha) with a very fun core. And I think that is something PC should ever strive towards. In this sense, the new name you've picked out seems fine, and works towards upholding this structure that PC has.

But at the same time, I feel that these forums also, kind of mask PCs true nature a little. It looks good, clear and professional, but lacks the silly, playfulness it has at heart. And this is where the Off-Topic forums really shine, and really display what PC is about. Having fun in a mature, sensible way. (And then there's Ausaudriel, and the thread everyone knows by now lol) I do think, that if these fun and witty forum titles were to spread, it would really bring to light how PC really is, and would attract many more users.

That said, turning that statement on its head, doing that might actually have the reverse effect and end up lessening the users appearing in some sections, since the fun sections that used to stand out wouldn't if every forum adopted that style of title. I think though, that it's something to think about.

Overall though, I think the name you've chosen is fine, and fits very nicely into the PC scheme of things right now. But I think also that looking into perhaps a more witty title might not be such a bad call either. Either way, it's your decision, these are just a couple of thoughts, in a very babbly, long-winded way haha!

I'm okay with Film, Music, and Television, but I feel that's too generic? Maybe something wittier like "The Culture Bomb" or "The Cinema Complex" or something like that.

Honey, let's be reasonable here. Most of the threads in Treehouse/The Playground/The Underground contain more nuclear waste than sensibility or maturity. Let's keep the focus on incoherence quarantined to Off-Topic.

    @ David & Matt

Anyway, rebranding the section has been done about 45 times now. Though, to your credit, this is the closest it has gotten to actually stating the point of the section. But I have to ask what I ask every time talk of a rebranding is announced - how will this rebranding actually be implemented? How will things change? What is your plan?

    What about books and sports? ;__;

Maybe call it General Entertainment again, but you know how like the Advanced Generation section has those coloured things in its description that say Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FR, LG? What about something similar with the description of GE, having movies, TV, music, books, sport, whatever with like a coloured glow or something so it stands out, and at the same time so the section is more inclusive than just "Film, Music & TV"?

I actually like this idea to be honest. It sounds the most accurate and functional.

i actually agree that 'Culture & Media' is a bit too abstract of a name to really attract attention - to be honest i never ventured into the section much at all because of it. so i'd say something a bit more concrete would be nice. but i also agree with what Charlie Brown said and that limiting it to just film, music and TV might be too much. so since i lack creativity i'll go along and say that maybe General Entertainment is the best option c: it's straightforward, so people know what to expect, but still it covers the load and doesn't exclude anything.

Interesting. But, I do have to ask what the difference in it being called Culture & Media and having those things in the description (as it currently does) and being called General Entertainment with the very same. I realize your idea is based mostly around the "coloured things in its description" but the name is big and bold and regardless of what's in the description, it's the first thing people see when they scroll to Entertainment & Hobbies, and it's what they'll remember as far as interacting with the section goes. It's the draw to the board, first and foremost, just like how Video Games draws its viewers from the fact that, well, it's very evidently a place for video gaming.

People generally aren't going to read all the descriptions for every section so they're likely to base their thoughts on a section on the first thing they see - the big name (and anything in the description that is made to visually stand-out). With the question of the big name of Culture & Media vs the big name of General Entertainment, it's just that General Entertainment (or something similar) is more descriptive and gives a better idea of what the section is about that Culture & Media (which can be seen as more vague).

    hi, haven't forgotten about this.

maccrash and i talked a bit (i think, i have a lot of dreams about talking to maccrash because i love him and i don't recall which ones are real) and we like the idea of having a flashy description with a generic name (tba!!) to call some more attention to the section and its focal points. because we're special. deserve to be recognized. proud individuals! we will work out the finer details soon and deliver... soon!

thanks for the feedback everyone. you don't understand how greatly i appreciate everyone's input. unless you suggested naming it something more off-the-wall, then i need to chastise you for not reading the OP.

    xo

i loathe the thought of another failed c&m update so when you do come up with a more concrete answer/vision be sure to get back to me with this

don't think of it as a rebrand. by now, the word rebrand feels like venom on my tongue because of how people have thrown it around. i don't want this to be seen as a huge renovation or series of changes. it'll just be "things done to hopefully improve the section's image and visibility". is that a fair answer? still haven't spoken in-depth with maccrash so that's all from me alone, for the record.
