    lame title is laaaaaaame halp

Hi there. Name's Delusions of Originality. Some of you might know me better as Phoenixsong or Kratos Aurion, or possibly as something else entirely because I am super-consistent when it comes to choosing usernames. Anyway, I draw stuff. Not as often as I used to because my hands have been getting crappier by the year and I don't know why, but I try!

So uh anyway here's some stuff. Some of it is new, most of it is old, all of it is of questionable quality. Here we go!

    Fakemon

osnap fakemon. Yeah, I draw 'em. I make up their stats and everything, too, and stuff them unceremoniously into convoluted region projects. Lame, I know. But they're kind of cool almost! I'm not going to post all of my current fakes here--you can search around my fakedex website or deviantART or something if you want more--but I'll touch on some of the less-horrendous ones here, I guess.

Bossorna - The final-stage grass starter of what is currently my largest fanregion, New Logora. Grass/Poison. Yes, I know it isn't a reptile. Screw reptiles. This line is based on bullthorn acacia trees, some of which have hallucinogens in their thorns. Sometimes idiot kids in New Logora will intentionally irritate a bossorna in the hopes that it'll inject its trippy poison; usually they just end up gored. >D

Burungin - New Logora's final-stage fire starter. Werehyenas are infinitely more awesome than werewolves. Burungin can't actually shapeshift, but it can firebend and thus disguise itself in flames like nobody's business. No, I don't know what the mask is for; it just looks cool.

Osgrave - New Logora's final-stage water starter. Water/flying. One of my favorites, too. I wish I could have one. Yes, this is the thing in my avatar and userbar--a lovely lady named Bluwiikoon sprited it for me. :3

Jackravage - A male-only buneary evolution I created for a contest and then later added to New Logora. Evolves when you trade a male buneary that's holding a berserk gene. One of my most popular fakes, apparently, though I'm not entirely sure why. Normal/fighting.

Minijina - An odd little ghost-type that lives deep in the woods of New Logora. It's based on a combination of two Japanese obake--the mujina, or shapeshifting badger spirit, and the noppera-bo, or faceless spirit. Faceless badger ghosts, yup. Yay.

Noperajina - Minijina's final stage (we're skipping the middle stage because it's not as interesting). It disguises itself with its ghostly mist, making itself appear to be something it isn't, and then scares the bejeebus out of its companions when it reveals that it's actually a horrible undead faceless badgerthing. Technically the mouth could be considered part of a "face", but it's just not a noperajina if it doesn't have that friendly serial killer smile.

Cubly - A plain, rather uninteresting ice-type fox. It's boring and it's weak, but it's obscenely rare. Why would you go out of your way to catch one? Perhaps because when it evolves, it turns into...

Arctangel - ...something a lot cuter! That also fails less! An ice-type "cute contest milotic", if you will. They're great for appeals but are horribly spoiled, so watch out.

Derfin - Psychic-type land dolphin that's meant to be a sort of "smart contest feebas". it r dum. Moving on.

Encanoto - Derfin's evolution, the "smart contest milotic". Psychic. Stay in school and get an education and you, too, can become a genius land dolphin, kids!

Mandragoon - Another final-stage grass starter (grass/flying), this one from the Faelan region. Created primarily because "mandrake" needed moar "drake" (dragon) in it. Don't be around one when it starts screaming.

Asgolan - Faelan's fire starter finally turns into this fine fire/psychic fellow. I am well aware that it looks very humanoid, before you say anything--it's supposed to. It's based on an elf, not an animal.

Takhampos - Aaaand the Faelani final-stage water guy. Technically it's based on a campchurch, not a hippocampus (look it up, don't feel like explaining). It swims really fast and doesn't afraid of anything.

Beck - Hey, wait! That's not a fakemon! No, silly, that's Beck, New Logora's fifth gym leader and resident water-type specialist. He's descended from the people responsible for a lot of the unown-related ruins and crap, which sounds out of left field but is pretty important to New Logora's history and "plot". His first name is actually Alzlbex; you can imagine why he prefers "Beck".

That's more than enough of that for now. I can always dump the rest of the old fakestuff on you later. Moving on!

    General Pokémon Art

Sketchy, scribbly pokemans stuff I colored in Photoshop. Not sure there's much else to say, really.

Mightyena - What it says on the tin. My favorite pokémon in spite of the fact that Game Freak made it suck and no one can respect the fact that it's a hyena.

Lucario - Again, self-explanatory. Was originally supposed to be the villainess from my 2008 NaNoWriMo, but it doesn't really look like her so now it's just some generic lucario.

    Luxray - Uh-huh.

Let There Be Lightning - Random picture of a jolteon in a storm. I fail at lightning, but I'm getting better at drawing rocks. Yay?

Leaf Storm - A sceptile charging up a leaf storm. Or something. The leaves on the trees suck but I like the lighting.

Me and My Huge Killer Dinosaur - Inspired by early videos of HGSS before it came out in Japan. Watching smilies appear over a tyranitar's head will do funny things to you. Like make you draw a picture that will never let anyone else see tyranitar the same way again.

Morty - My favorite male gym leader and his awesome scarf of awesome. Scaaaarf. ilu HGSS redesign <3

Storm at Sea - ugh lame title. Some random jolteon battling a lugia. Came out pretty nicely, I guess.

King of the Hill - Okay, so both of the pokémon in this pic are fakemon, but they're not pseudomori style so they go here. My second-round entry into a dA contest last year; in a nutshell, you pick a pokémon, make up an evolution for it that uses the king's rock, and then draw it fighting other people's king's rock fakes. Mine is shikaizar, the arcanine-thing on the bottom; the thing on the top is SuperRara's saberane. (The sunset in the background is a stock photo; I fail at sunsets and didn't want to barf up the picture with my own attempt.) SuperRara ended up knocking me out of the contest, but it was fun and I got to add shikaizar to New Logora (with a few tweaks, admittedly).

Virgil Lancaster - The main character in an OT fanfic I'll probably never write, but it's nice to dream. Virgil isn't really a human, and he definitely doesn't want to be a pokémon trainer, but after he screwed up and ticked off some very irritable legendaries he was forced into it. Hilarity ensues, et cetera. He was supposed to look more annoyed than he does--Virgil has just two moods, "mildly annoyed" and "flaming indignation"--but whatever. Sort of nice to see him looking a little vulnerable. But don't tell him that. He doesn't like to be vulnerable. That's for pansies.

...what is Virgil if he isn't a human? Ah-ah-ah... not telling. ;) You'll just have to hope that I grow enough of a spine to actually write the story.

    Other Art

I do, in fact, draw more than just pokémon! I even do completely original, non-fanstuff, but I have to go dig for those. In the meantime, these will do.

Zelos Wilder - Dunno how many of you here are familiar with Tales of Symphonia, but it's one of my favorite games. For NaNo 2009 I decided to try and write an AU ToS fanfic set in 1935, complete with private eyes and mobs and old cars and fedoras. And magic and ninjas and puppies. Zelos is the main character of said Depression-era monstrosity, Incarnadine Harvest; he's a PI currently investigating a case involving a stolen ring. And then all heck breaks loose. Hilarity ensues again, etc., etc.. Not shaded because it was just a quick concept and I didn't feel like it.

Genis Sage - Moar Incarnadine Harvest concept art, this time of Zelos's erstwhile apprentice, Genis. Genis's official design should include a newsboy cap, by the way. Because it should. How can you possibly go wrong with Genis in a newsboy cap? :3 Again, not shaded due to lazy.

...yeaaaah. Art. Comment or something, I guess.

    Thanks, Eeveon!

I have two new fakemon, and then we'll just dump some old stuff while we wait for more new stuff, mmkay?

    Fakemon

Bucarat - A plague rat. Pleasant, I know, but innit cute? Poison-type.

Mortarat - Bucarat's evolution. Also poison-type and full of delicious plague goo (don't poke it in the belly!), and apparently hungry for brainz! Or something.

    Other

King Vail - It's a long story, but I've had vague notions of a Fire Emblem-style game/story in my head for a while; this is a concept pic for one of the characters. In FE parlance, Vail here would be the "lord" character. He's young and inexperienced and quite frankly a really crappy king, so he'd better get to learning fast. Or bad things will happen.

Icarus - An important and adorable NPC in the pseudo-Fire Emblem mathing. Can't really say anything else about him at the moment.

Maybe I can entice people into this thread with some kitties, hm.

Apologies in advance if the images screw up loading time, but I'm starting to get the impression that this is one of those art forums where people tend not to look if they have to click a link. Not a real problem (I can be the same way and probably ought to stop that), though I was hoping to avoid any potential 56k issues. Ah, well.

    maaphix.png

Maaphix! It's a ground-type sphinx-kitty. But it's not just any sphinx-kitty. Because it evolves into bigger sphinx-kitties that are a heck of a lot more interesting, in my humble opinion, than the usual bigger-sphinx-kitties you usually see. For example, get it to level 25 while it's holding a sharp beak and you end up with...

    harmontu.png

...Harmontu! Ground/flying. It makes sandstorms and doesn't afraid of anything has pretty sweet attack and special attack. It's not a gryphon, by the way; it's a type of sphinx called a hieracosphinx, or falcon-headed sphinx. Look it up.

Alternatively, you could try giving your maaphix a hard stone. That would net you one of these:

    khersin.png

Khersin, rock/ground. Better defense than harmontu, but just as fast, just as hard-hitting (physically, anyway) and just as chock-full of sand-streamy goodness. This one is what you would call a criosphinx, or ram-headed sphinx.

    Pretty kitties? Y/N/M?

You're not going to get rid of me that easily! *fistshake*

    BlazikenHeatWave.jpg

A blaziken picture someone won as a prize in a dA contest I held. Lawd I'm terrible with fire, but otherwise I think it turned out well.

Awesome. For lack of a better word, I'll just put it again, but in caps!

    AWESOME!

Did I mention that your art is awesome? XD I love your "kitties" (sphinx but okay) and wish the Gen 5 pokemon looked as cool as your Fakemon. Fantastic art! I love your Mightyena art too. Mightyena is my number one favorite & your art of it makes it look oh so cool.

Oh wow, your fakemon are pretty cool! oAo!
I would definitely spend a few good hours roaming around for a Cubly- I actually like it more than it's evolved form. xD Pokemon lacks simple things like Cubly.

Minijina is another one of my favorites- a very interesting design with excellent art that could totally pass for a real pokemon. =u=b

My only suggestion would be, perhaps, at some point start considering trying to color your lines, or make them lighter with some nice selective coloring? I feel like that would make them look much smoother. ^u^

I finally get some comments, and then I just up and let my thread die. Nice, Delusions. Nice.

Anyway! A belated thank you to all for the comments and compliments! I really appreciate them. :3

To respond to Loki's comment about the outlines--I'm not sure whether you're referring to the pseudomori fakemon, the full pictures or both, so if the fakemon were included in that I'll just point out that I'm intentionally trying to emulate Sugimori's style, and he doesn't color the outlines, so. Not quite an option for those. :I Pretty sure you meant the other art, of course, but just in case. I... I've thought about coloring the outlines every now and then, although I do kind of like the way my more detailed works have a rougher quality; it's part of why I always leave the lineart sketchy instead of cleaning it up more. Also I am exceptionally lazy, and after laying down the color I get tired of it and just want to stop and not mess with the picture ever again (which is terrible and hinders improvement, but there you go). Still, I might give it a shot one of these days. Who knows, I might end up liking it better after all. :p

It means a lot to get advice from someone so talented, though, so thanks. :D

I don't really do anything special while creating these, for those who asked--I just sketch it out in pencil, scan it, open it in Photoshop, change its layer mode to multiply and then color under it. I even have an old crappy version of Photoshop, too.

On to more recent developments, then! I messed up my website's gallery last week, and as a result ruined the links to most of the non-fakemon pictures in previous posts. If you happened to check the thread around then--not that that's likely, considering I let it die--and there were broken links, wellp, that's what happened. Oops! I'll fix them as soon as I'm done with this post.

    Speaking of which!

    WargleFlight.png

It's been a while since I've bothered to attempt a full picture like this. Man those clouds took forever--I'm really terrible with backgrounds, especially atmospheric stuff like clouds, and I had to follow a tutorial (well, several, because it took a while to find one I liked and could follow) to get them even that far. I'm usually not very good with sunsets, either. All that said, I think this is some of my best work and I'm proud of it even if I can point out a dozen silly mistakes.

EDIT: All of the links in my previous art posts should be fixed now. If something's still broken when you click on it, holler and I'll give it another look.

  • You are really good. I like some of your fakemon designs too! The sphinx kitty is probably your best one. I also think you're really good at drawing the cute first-stage type. I've noticed in my own work that those are a lot easier. My one piece of advice is: don't be afraid to go REALLY dark on your darkest shading layer. It looks like, right now, you are doing 3 layers per color? When I started drawing fakemon, I had to switch to four in order to get the right effect and to have enough variety.

But keep up the good work!
