I'm not one to handle business in Game Development. You should just ignore the thread and let Avatar handle it when he signs on.

I don't know enough about this topic to deal with the five mod reports generated by it, so were closing it until an experienced staff in this subject looks at it.
Ladies and gentlemen, this is unacceptable. The Game Dev forums are heating up lately, and action must be taken to accommodate the new situation. People aren't getting along, and, since most of us agree that concessions are impractical, we know from within that the bickering will continually come up until the place tightens up.

I think it was that Chewy guy who suggested something similar a bit ago (memory failure)...adding a mod is not necessary; however, I just briefly took a count of the generic mods and found 22 of them. I took a count of how many were placed on the Emulation section: three. We've got Avatar: one. Let's face it--every time something goes awry around there, we've gotta wait for him and let stuff escalate, flood the staff with reports, or PM somebody with powers to close the thread temporarily (I did that yesterday...shouldn't be necessary). We should not have to rely on one person to keep our messy section of the board clean.

Civil discussions have become difficult lately for some people (I say that because the minority always ruins it for the whole), and the only way to change that is to add one of those other 21 moderators for the duration. There's a wide range of choices, so all I have left to say is, well, not really anything...I'm deferring to Nike.

Higher staff have respect for moderators enough to let them handle situations within their designated moderated forum. With that said, it should be also stated that not many of the higher staff with the exception of Jake really have experience in game development. Just because they are higher staff doesn't mean you should expect them to know much about a particular subject. This goes especially for those regarding game development. Going back to my first point, higher staff typically focus their time (or at least the ones I talk to) when they are moderating the forums on unmoderated forums and handle reports in moderated forums only if it gets out of hand and the designated moderator is not online or is on a leave of absense.

We have 21 other mods ("generic" mods? what?), but do they know anything about game dev themselves? There's no use in putting a mod into a section that they know absolutely nothing about - how would that be any different from letting higher staff who don't know the forum do something about things?

(And if any of those other mods did know the forum, then they'd probably already be modded in there.)

What exactly is there to know? I couldn't just step into the hacking forums and claim to be an expert, though I'm sure that, if I spent a day reading around, I'd get the jist of it. What's the secret that I know that nobody else does? There isn't one--if someone breaks a rule, they get infracted and the such. All of you know that stuff. Do you mean a 'cultural literacy' particular to that section? You all can read; that's the only job requirement (since you already have the job anyways...)...

If that's so, then what would be the point of another mod in the Game Dev section? If what you state is true, the higher ups could easily handle it on their own.

You kind of contradicted yourself there. :/

Please remember this ▲: People won't get along well with you if you don't wish to get along with them first.

I think less, or more like NO blame should be placed on the staff situation there, and more on the members. It's you guys who need to clean up your acts. We shouldn't have to put someone else there because you guys can't get along. In fact, I'm pretty sure we tend to get rid of things in the case that the members have proven to be incapable of behaving...

Being able to read something is a 'job requirement'. If so, many other members would be moderators as well just for having the brain capacity to read something and comprehend it efficiently.

The point is, higher staff, as stated, respect the moderator of that section. They typically do not interfere with the way that the moderator runs their section and if the moderator isn't online at the time of a conflict, it should not result in the moderator being criticized and basically saying that they cannot handle the job alone. That's especially insulting due to the fact that Avatar has been a moderator of Game Developement for years now. It's not only the moderator's job to make that section what it is. The frequenters of that section mold the clay that the moderator builds and makes the section. If members are going to act like savages, then that's what the section is going to be looked upon and believe me, Avatar does a hell of a job seeing as how Game Developement has been increasing in popularity over the years and doing what you're doing now is just shameful. Let the moderator of said section, in this case Avatar, handle the problems unless there's something in dire need. Believe me, moderators check the reports often and if a higher staff member sees that something must be addressed, they will address it.

I agree with you. I have faith in Avatar and one moderator should be enough to deal with issues like this.

Fascinating that everyone takes this as an assault on the staff, really it is.
Personally I'd divert a super mod to help out at that forum until it calms down, this should prove to be a simple endeavour since there are now five supers.

In fact, I'm pretty sure we tend to get rid of things in the case that the members have proven to be incapable of behaving...
I'd see it as one of my duties as admin to take all possible measures to keep all areas open.
However if it'd be a temporary closure to 'teach a lesson', by all means continue with your current course of action.

This is really not a big deal. agree with Ursaring; us game dev. regulars should at least try to work it out ourselfs. Aurapostle also has a point though. I think most of the veterans of game dev. now that Avatar can be respected enough to know that he has pretty much taken control over game dev. and is doing fine. Again, though, I agree with Agent Zero. I agree with quite a bit of these people here, but the msot part is that people should just let the staff decide whether a certain section is getting a little to hard for one moderator. They have the choice to mod someone else and see what they do. They have the choice to do a lot. I think that the Game Dev. is getting a little out of hand since the Odyessy incident (sorry if I mispelled), and maybe Avatar does need some help. Maybe he dosen't. If I'm not mistaken, Avatar's name is Jake, and with that knowledge, I can strongly say: Avatar has it under control. If the staff dosen't think so, they'll mod someone. End of story.

XDD Isnt Jake Haraken? Unless avatar is also Jake :O then there are two Jakes, of which, both are educated in the game dev/rom hacking area XD

Anyways, Minor arguments can be handled by members, use the report function, and ignore it.. Take your arguements to a PM or VM... If youre saying theres too much fighting in game dev, its your fault for not being smart and using the millions of methods of talking (MSN, PM, VM, even emailing for gods sake XD). Moderators can only go so far >.> Getting along isnt the moderator's job unless it gets wayy out of hand.

Threads and stuff that are unsolicited, just ignore them and report them...

Theres no need to look for another Moderator if one is enough.

I'm sure Avatar is smart enough to request help if he needs it />.>/

If members can't behave then they should be banned, now with this in mind, I ask you do you really want to continue this argument in the Dev section or are you gonna stop spaming up the section?

If members can't behave then that's not Avatars fault, that's their own responsibility, the alone decide how they behave, and if they want to get infracted then please be my guess get infracted.

Avatar has modded his section for years, and this is the only complaint I have ever seen so that must mean he's doing something wright, and because he's doing something wright then I'm pretty sure the higher staff wan't him to continue what he is doing, there for they probably won't touch his section messing up his system.

And remember staff are people just like you and me, they can't be on here 24/7 they have lifes as well, they have school's and job's just like you!

You do know that a normal mod can't close or delete threads that are not in their section, so I see no reason to mention them at all.

I have to side with the staff on this one. If there's one thing I do respect and admire about the upper staff here at PC it's how they put their complete faith into the moderators when they select them. For you to be coming to the upper staff asking them to go over the mod's head when they clearly feel he's doing a fine job as is, is naught but a slap in the face to them.

As someone who is known for being a watchdog, even I say you've gone too far. If you were concerned, you could have simply privately contacted a few admins about it. (though in this case I see no need for it)

I know you're worried. There's been more than one point in time where I thought there was trouble but there really wasn't. I dont blame you for being concerned, the staff isn't always really eager to explain what's going on to the members, and for that they ARE slightly wrong. But, even so. Seeing as how you've already talked privately with the higher staff and are now posting this thread because you didn't like their answer is a bit childish dont you think?
