did your parents tell you to stay away from blue collar jobs ?

Yes, we had the talk everyday of my life. In Japan it is still very difficult and rare for women to get decent job or even a career. My father was very serious to have it where I was able to have a good job. He'd never buy me games, I'd have to buy them myself, he scolded me for getting anything lower than an A (Excluding English since he was a horrible teacher, had to lean this language myself). He got me to join the School council, etc. He pretty much had my life all planned out. He wasn't giving me the choice to go to college, he ordered me to. He was worried I wouldn't make it in life. I went to college for 3 years in Japan, then I was accepted to Massachusetts Institute of Technology where I'm currently going to in America from something similar to the "Exchange Student" program. I plan to follow through his plan, since I see how rough it really is back home.
 
When I was in school, my parents and my teachers urged me on to go to college. They wanted to see me succeed, I gather, at something I was already very good at but never enthusiastic about: schoolwork. Due to my ADHD and bipolar tendencies, though, I had a lot of explosive temper-tantrums and ended up in special education classes that ended up nullifying any chance I had at getting a college degree when I finally graduated high school, with a special education diploma.

Faced with either getting a blue-collar job or a GED, I kind of loafed around aimlessly for a few years before finally settling down and facing facts: I had to grow up and figure out some way to subsist in my life. So, I talked to my father and he got me a job working half-time for the fire damage restoration company he's been working for. Jump to today; I'm still living with my parents, but I'm more responsible and more thoughtful than I might have been in college. I'm paying my own rent, I pay for my food and other resources, I work diligently when I have work and I keep the house tidy and the dogs walked when I'm at home.

My conclusion is, as nice as college might have been, I'm glad I never went and got a job instead. I feel like I'm contributing to my own well-being and my family's more than I might have at college.
 
My parents have always been really supportive of me, regardless of what job or career I choose to pursue.
Which is actually pretty cool, considering how many things I'm interested in. xD
