Erin Marcelo
Juilliard College, New York: Saturday March 29th, 2014
Erin couldn't help but take peaks inside of Emily's gym bag over and over again. Each time he looked he couldn't believe that eggs came out of his TV not too long ago. Did that make his little Sony a Sonya? This was going to keep him up for days.
Erin looked back in the gym bag and eyed the eggs again. They were huge, like pick-them-up-with-two-hands-we-might-be-in-Jurassic-Park huge. Erin was glad he used the restroom before he left, it might not be so safe to do so now. He reached into the bag and touched the eggs. The white and blue speckled one was cold to the touch, almost wet, while the orange colored one was dry and a little warm. He didn't know what that was supposed to mean, and were these things supposed to hatch!? Or were they just some kind of computerized bricks/poops that fell out of his television? He tried to remember the video games he'd been playing lately, but Billy Hatcher hadn't been on the list since he was nine. Erin placed his hand on the orange egg and shook it a little. Was there anything even in there? How were they even supposed to tell? Put a light under it? Erin looked around the gym and confirmed that, yes, there wasn't a single flashlight in sight. He couldn't even ask Emily who was tumbling and flipping all over the gym floor. Graceful as it was it wasn't exactly helpful.
For a moment Erin wondered how weird it looked for him to rifle through his girlfriend's duffel bag like this, but then again he doubted anyone was paying attention. Another look over proved that they weren't. Reaching back into the bag he shook the orange egg again, harder this time. He didn't stop until he felt the slightest tap against the egg.
"What the…?" Erin's hand hovered over the egg for a moment. When nothing happened he shook the egg again. Whatever was inside responded for a second time, this time breaking through the egg itself. "Sh*t!" He yelped as a small, feathered creature broke out and looked at him with large black and orange eyes. It gave him a slightly menacing look with what appeared to be a black visor-like eyebrow arched upwards. Erin cursed again, closing the top of the gym bag with his hands swiftly to stop the TV-egg-monster from doing whatever it knew how to do. He looked up at Emily and her teammates where they still practiced. He didn't know how to tell her that some freaky bird-thing was nestling up against her tampons right now, especially without bringing extra attention.
"Emily!" He whispered loudly. "Emily!" Instead of hearing him and looking over, Emily kept tumbling across the gym like she'd been doing. He called her again, a little louder this time, but still to no avail. This… Wasn't going to be easy. Erin lifted the gym bag's flap and peaked inside again. For that brief moment, the bird-thing puffed out at Erin. He closed the bag again. Why did it have to be his TV?
Luckily for him, Emily was nearing the end of her floor routine when she finally noticed Erin and his obvious distress. Part of her couldn't tell if he was excited or freaked out. She sighed but eventually walked over to her boyfriend, a bottle of water in her hands. "Did something happen?" She asked as she sat beside him. "I could see you acting like this from across the gym."
"Yeah, this!" Erin opened the bag and flashed the bird-monster to her. "I'm too young to be a mother, Em!"
"What the hell are you talking-" she began before seeing what exactly was in the bag. For a brief moment, she was left speechless. "D-Did this hatch from one of the eggs," she asked as she stared at the brown bird-like…Thing… It sort of stared at the girl in a somehow intimate fashion, only stopping when a small yelp came from beneath its downy feathers.
"Yeah!" Erin answered. He looked in the bag one more time before closing it again. "It's so weird to look at," he said with a small shudder. "What the hell are we going to do? What if the other one opens up?"
Emily sighed before looking around the gym nervously. What would happen if the other one hatched here? she thought. The only thing I can think of doing is leaving… "We need to go to the apartment, Erin. We can't have two bird-things flying around in public. What would happen if someone noticed them?"
"Two bird-things!?" Erin said rather loudly. Realizing his error he glanced around the room to see if anyone was paying attention. A few of Emily's teammates looked their way, but they went back to talking soon. "One is bad enough!" He whispered this time. Erin could already imagine second chicken-gone-wrong popping out of the other egg and terrorizing them with its… its… It was too gruesome to mention. The brow-visor was frightening enough. "Everyone would freak out!" A reasonable reaction, in Erin's opinion. "Are you done with practice? Can you leave now?"
"No and yes," she said, answering the questions in order before turning around and walking towards the other gymnasts. She was back moments later. "Alright. It's time for us to go." She took her gym bag from him, only unzipping it long enough to grab her shorts. At least, it's harmless, she thought as the bird-thing sniffed her new watch. Either way, she knew it would be better to have it at the apartment instead of there. "Lead the way," she said, putting on her shorts and handing the bag back to him.
Erin slung the bag over his shoulder, though admittedly rather hard. He could feel the hardness of the egg (or Emily's shoes) smash into his back and the little bird inside squeal. He whispered an apology before continuing out the door. The parking lot wasn't very full, just the cars of the gymnasts who came to practice. The two of them easily navigated to their car. Erin sat in the passenger's seat this time with the gym bag in his lap.
"So are we… keeping these?" He asked as they pulled off.
"There's not much else we can do with them at the moment," Emily replied.
"We can drop them off at Central Park," Erin suggested as they pulled off. Or just throw them out the window. Erin opened the gym bag and the first thing he saw was the bird-puffball-mutant glaring at him. He didn't know how he felt about looking at that all of the way home. Shying away, Erin looked at the remaining egg instead. It only took him a second to notice the crack on the side. What could have happened? He remembered the impact from slinging the bag over his shoulder. Oh, that. Erin picked up the egg and eyed it. That wasn't fatal was it? Erin examined the egg, not sure how to tell if the little thing inside was alive or dead. He got his answer when a little white beak burst from the crack of the egg. Erin shrieked in surprise, startling both Emily and the bird-thing. The little animal reacted by hopping out of the bag and settling in Emily's lap while Emily herself just looked mad.
"Erin, are you trying to kill the damn thing?"
"It did it by itself!" Erin had taken his eyes off of the egg to speak to Emily. By the time he put them back on the egg its head was already out. It looked like some kind of white fish the size of a small dog with large, red eyes and two long antenna at the top of its head. It flapped its little fins like it was swimming in the air and smiled at him. "You know this one is kind of cute. How come that one doesn't smile?" He asked, poking the the bird-thing in its brow-visor.
That's when it happened. Instantly, the bird-thing glowed a bright white before changing into what appeared to be a blue-hued code of some sort. Emily barely managed to focus on the road as the thing on her lap grew larger. Just as quickly as it started the thing stopped glowing and in its place sat a new creature. It was still a bird of some sort but there were various differences to what it had been before. The bird-thing now had two legs and two tails and its visor was now in two separate red eyebrows.
"What the hell?" They exclaimed in unison.
