Discussion : Should Gyms try new ideas?

One of the staples of the Pokemon series I find is the gyms. Rarely has the standard to gyms been changed with the main one to my memory being Gold/Silver having 16 gyms. But now we've got over 650 pokemon, do we really need to stick with say an Ice gym or a Flying gym?

I sat down looking through all of the pokemon (Thanks Gen 6 for reigniting my interest in Pokemon :) ), and it from what I see, we have plenty of other ideas for gym focuses.

Why not a Canine gym where all the pokemon are dog related? Why not have a gym where all the pokemon are Dual Types? Or how about a gym which is in flux to what pokemon you chose at the beginning? You could even have a gym where all the pokemon are Eevee and its evolutions (once we get to that point where most types have been covered).

It does seem that the gym concept could easily be tinkered with and provide some fresh new ideas.
What do you think? Should we have gyms that aren't the typical standard for Pokemon in the series? What's your thoughts on this? Should this staple in the series stay the same or is it high time we saw new ideas?

I really like the idea of having a theme-based gym (like the canine gym you mentioned). The possibilities seem endless. A gym could specialize in "technology" Pokemon (like Porygon, Rotom etc.) or a music/sound gym that had Pokemon like Chatot, Loudred, or hey, maybe Jigglypuff.
I definitely want to see a dark-type gym first, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did add in a dual-type gym in the future.

Well, some ideas I had for themed gyms were kind of spoofed from the Battle Frontier, where you had to meet certain conditions before you could fight the Frontier Brain. For instance, there could be a casino themed gym where you have to keep playing a game of roulette until you land on the gym leader's slot. Between times, the way you bet determines how hard your next battle is (a loss makes it harder and a win makes it easier).

I think that they should stick with Gyms just having one type of Pokemon. What they should do instead is make the Gym layouts/designs longer and more challenging. Gyms are often too easy to navigate, and I'd love it if they made better Gym puzzles. Half the battle should be getting there (especially since in game trainers are rarely difficult, even Gym Leaders, unless you're underleveled or your party is rather lacking in Pokemon that can handle the Gym).

We also need more Gyms in a region. G/S/C/HG/SS had the right idea with 16 Gyms.

And there needs to be a Dark type Gym. IDK why they haven't done it yet. Should've done it last gen, but nope, they just made it one of the Elite 4 types...again.

Absolutely not, the series has always gone well with gym leaders being type specialists. The first few gyms wouldn't be much of a challenge for beginners if they specialize types that have the advantage against the starter you've picked.

Actually, G/S/C/HG/SS showed us how having 16 gyms isn't such a great idea, for it involves bad leveling curves and a half-baked post-game region.

A harder to navigate gym sounds cool. 12 gyms seems like a good compromise. You get more gameplay without the horrible leveling curve. The first six could be type gyms like now and the other six themed gyms that the OP said.

Funny thing is that they did once have a gym where the Gym Leader(s) had a type advantage against your starter: The Striation City Gym in B/W. It's just that the game also hands you a Pokemon to counter that. Not saying they should do that again (cuz they really shouldn't), but I just wanted to point out that they have done it before.

I thought it was a good idea. I like having many things to do in Pokemon (really wish Game Freak wasn't so damn inconsistent about post Elite 4 content). Besides, they could always fix it or something.

They still follow the type specialist rule rather than a theme like all gym leaders.

They barely fixed anything in the remakes, making it still feel like a chore rather than a good experience due to lack of post-content in Kanto.

I can agree with difficult puzzles, I'm hoping for that Dark Gym Leader at some point...but the themes should be left fir the Battle Frontier, or a "Gym" that doesn't give you badges, but gives you another incentive like that Dojo in Saffron City

I'd like to see Gyms that specialize in a certain stat, a certain kind of move, or a certain status effect.
