He's a good villain, much better than all of the Uchiha♥♥♥♥♥♥ry in the rest of the series. Glad he's still about.

On that note, I had a thought the other day. Does the original Naruto even matter? At all? I mean, I look at the series and realize that by skipping the entire original series, you would be missing next to nothing. The story's just grown so damn large from what was originally a show that had a premise but no real goal.

I mean, it's like each book is a new super twist. At least. I was in a bookstore, picked up a random volume, read the back, and read reanimation of the kage and Sausage cooperating with Orochimaru. I had to take a double take and I had relative knowledge of the story. And there are so many webs and twists and turns between volumes that you can't miss one or you'll be just...so lost. But with the original, there's not really that much that you miss if you skip it. But if you went from Sausage's departure to any of the post-Akatsuki chapters of Shippuden (or Pain arc, I guess), you'd be so far gone.

-Introduction - Obviously need that
-Land of waves - Only real bit of male bonding between Naruto and Sasuke/Real introduction to the world they are living in through Zabuza and Haku's backstory
-Chuunin exam - Introduces the main villain/Some more world backstory through Neji and Gaara/Hinata end also confirmed
-Invasion - Introduces reanimations
-Finding Tsunade - Well that was ultimately about building a relationship with Jiraiya and powering up

After that Sasuke buggers off. If you picked it up after that I expect the experience would be a lot worse and you probably wouldn't survive part 2.

Also I disagree that it didn't have a goal in the beginning. It was quite obviously going to be about ninja jesus ending the cycle of hatred in the world. It felt like that in the Land of the Waves and was confirmed when we heard about Jiraiya's first book.

I mean, that's all there, but I really think you could pick up on a lot of these things if you're a late joiner. A lot of things, such as the relationships between characters, reanimations, and the curse mark really seem like things that would be reinforced if I'd read the original, but I don't think I'd feel lost if I hadn't watched it. A lot of things are reintroduced and developed in Shippuden, so it makes them easy to latch onto. Even the worldbuilding is pretty simple in Naruto, enough that you could watch Shippuden and clasp onto how things work.

And I really do think that, to get behind the characters, you do need to invest in the original Naruto. But I think it's because Naruto is so much more simple compared to Shippuden where things are reintroduced and developed (and I really think it's because a lot of things start developing complexity here rather that it works), that it's not a necessity for a prospective fan.

And I don't mean it like that, I mean something you could put on a bookback description. The original was always basically "Enter Naruto, a hyperactive delinquent ninja that wants to be hokage! Follow him and his friends, Sakura and Sasuke, as they head forth on their quest to become world-class ninja". Until Orochimaru entered, of course. Then things got focused.

Eh...the thought was a lot clearer and more developed in my head when I thought it. I said "the other day", but this was actually a few weeks ago.

No point watching the first part of the story because it develops later on anyway.

Might as well be one of those plebs that read wikis over reading a manga or watching a show.

I'm just saying that a lot of things are reintroduced so it's not vital for one to read the original since they're pretty easy to grasp the second time around. Before they start developing.

As for whether there's a point...I'd at least say to. The Sausage X Naruto fight was pretty damn awesome and is still my favorite part of Naruto. It certainly helps if you want to like the characters at all. Or dislike, maybe; it all depends. But really, certain characters dying as more effect if you read the original. And reinforcement.

Again, there was more to the thought when I first had it. Here it just kind of came up.

Might as well be one of those plebs that read wikis over reading a manga or watching a show.

I wouldn't mind that, especially if someone likes Shippuden and doesn't like the original. Or in any case where someone likes the sequel more than the prequel, vice versa, or just wants the story. What's the point in watching/playing/reading something you don't like?

Not sure why anybody would do that though.

Best part of Naruto in my opinion was the conclusion to the Land of the Waves arc. Most well written but ultimately irrelevant arc would be the one with Hidan and Kakuzu. Then there are loads of moments that I've really enjoyed but that's just me and muh shounens.

There is nor more than one way to skin a cat in this instance, do it the right way or not at all.

Manga, anime and perhaps the games are ok. Reading wikis is totally gay and people that do that over a real method should be shot.

I've read on the internet people saying they like it more after it turns into Naruto Ball Z. Of course I don't really speak about anime to colleagues and if I did it wouldn't be Naruto.

Don't see the point of consuming a fictitious story without some sort of immersion. Is why I'm also against going in search of spoilers a day before new chapters are translated, I regularly speak to people that do that. Seems pointless.

That makes sense. Yeah, I would agree in that case, especially in the case of spoilers. Immersion is a big thing for me, so I'm a much bigger fan of seeing the source than just reading up on it. And I'd never really say that it's a substitute for the original.

I really don't see the point in spoilers prior to translation, though. Just...what's the point? Spoilers are already the easiest way to ruin an experience, but if you're that impatient and have so little going on to wait a day for something that you genuinely like...I just don't get it.

Not really sure what the best method of consuming this series would be. Would undoubtedly be the anime if we had a [One Pace] style editing and it would probably be the manga if we still had the early art style. Not played the games enough to really judge that but if you are getting the full story it could be a neat alternative, probably stays on model far more than the other two mediums. I'm actually pretty tempted to buy NS3 with it being on sale right now.

Gameplay-wise, it's pretty fun. Not great, but certainly not bad. But I think you've heard my gushing about how fantastic the presentation of the story is in NS3. It just does everything right, and it's not like "5 seconds of story, fight, story, fight", it feels like an actual legitimate alternative that values the story and characters over the fighting, only using fights for when its necessary. Plus CC2, the creators, really know how to make a cutscene.

So yeah, I'd recommend it.
