This is...random, but do you guys think an entertainment medium has ever died because the fans were just so useless and hopeless that they were the direct cause of it?

Because, y'know, I look at the gaming and anime industries and the latter in particular seems to value a lot of- eh, well I won't go into it. But the point is, I see a lot of general sadness and complaint over the majority of fans among the minor majority, and though they're generally valid complaints, one thing I notice is that we're still here. And a lot of people say that "gaming is getting worse" or that "new anime are all bad", both of which I disagree with, but lately it seems like the consumer is being played like a fiddle. Feels like supply and demand in the most systematic sense: the creators create content and we eat it up. But rather then them conforming to our needs, we conform to theirs, which is why they can create samey stories/themes/mechanics/etc. and people still eat it up (which is part of why I'm against people watching/reading things they find mediocre or worse just because its anime)

That was basically a mishmash of ideas and concepts I have in my head, but with that in mind, all I'm really asking is if you guys think that the fans can be the cause of the death of a medium, or if producers taking the reins might be its saving grace should it reach a low point?

Concerning the relationship between creators and consumers, I think the game industry is going mostly in the right direction; at least in the west, and definitely to a greater extent than anime.

However, animated film and similar media is very different from games in how there is little to no interactivity with the consumer. You have no control over the plot of an anime you're watching, so you'll have basically the same experience as anyone else. Because of this, the show has to have the same package of experiences and story cater to everyone watching. I would argue that this makes it more difficult for creators of this kind of media to experiment with the concept while still fulfilling the economic purpose of the media: which for anime often is to sell as many BDs and as much merch as possible. This in itself becomes a problem, as companies often focus on the factors that enable great merchandise profit rather than "high-quality" media. Why have a complex story with multi-layered characters when you can strive to make characters' personalities easily recognizable, their design attractive, and the whole package simple and likeable enough to warrant enough body pillow and beach OVA sales?

You could also easily draw a comparison with Hollywood, which also happens to be really, really stale. I won't right now, though.

I guess this isn't exactly a customer-product crisis, but there was the BeOS-Microsoft antitrust contravention back in the early 2000's.

BeOS was supposed to be the Windows-killer, but then Microsoft went behind closed doors and told hardware manufacturers not to provide the option of shipping it with products.

BeOS sued Microsoft, but then accepted a settlement of 20-odd million.

Of course, if Microsoft hadn't done this, it's likely that people wouldn't be using Windows nowadays.

Just saw some backstory spoilers for that chick in SAO 2. Funny.

Looks like I'll be dropping this every week a few more weeks.

What people like is slop and softcore porn anyways.

Though tbh its just because the Japanese market is filled with people who buy BD's for the fan service.

Now if only Western fans paid the studios directly maybe things will change. But problem is the non-Japanese market has been in crisis mode and largely abandoned post-2008 financial crisis. Its only started to recover recently.

TL;DR Anime is expensive and we get what we pay for.
