The self proclaimed Neuroscientists are apparently ripping off their hairs because of this show. Time to drop then.

But meh, to me a lot of the explanations are just an attempt to put things in layman's terms. Of course the concepts will be quite more complicated than that but you are trying to make people imagine.

As for the whole Matrix comparison, you do have to realize that the Matrix had technology that directly jabbed a needle into someones head as a neural interface LOL. This one facilitates things with more of an intermediary.

You know what, I'll stop. Its just anime and everyone has their own thing going on. Its just there to entertain hehe.

Yeah, but that's just an example. The idea that perceived pain can cause real detriment is an actual physics theory that has been tested before. It's a real thing. In fact, they even slightly mentioned it in the show, but...abandoned it, I guess, because after the scene was said and done, not much happened, he just a vein or two sticking out.

Then, of course, there's the ghost limb theory, that goes hand in hand with Schrodinger's Cat. It's the idea that, should one perceive that they still have a limb, even if they don't, they will still be able to control those limbs until the brain decides that they don't have them (ie when they see the reality of the situation). But nope, still fine, just a little more vane than he was before /pun.

I quit. I just...I quit. I'm done. Seriously, I'm just ****ing done. You know, I like to think that the masses can remove the clouds from their eyes and realize that there's more to a character than the fact that they want to have sex all the time and that, for a low price, they, too, can be your waifu, but...nope. And I'm done. I've never had too much faith, really. I mean, Mirai Nikki's popular. That's a thing. There were good times, at least. but when I see that anime I love like Danball Senki are dwindling in popularity and things like Alfheim Online and Ikki Tousen are popu-

Well, I really don't want to get into the whole medical debate because that's for the next arc LOL.

As for the swimsuit and romance issue, the reason why I really don't mind it was because during the time I picked up SAO just before the anime came out I was burned out from the whole idiot MC harem bs that was floating around so the first to third Volume was quite a refreshing view with the fast development and the desire to save one's love like the old fairy tales of yore.

That's why I was initially not a fan of the adaptation because the way they portrayed it as a harem genre by sticking in all the side stories that didn't even appear until Volume 4 and 8. :/

Still if you feel something you like is being detracted because of whatever's popular, then you should try seeing it from my POV. Something I love is being unfairly hated and judged upon just because its popular.

Anyways whatever, I'll just go ahead and talk about Dramatical Murder instead. That series is building up to be something I'd like. Thinking about picking up the VN for lawlz. Same crap more Bishonens.

Well, I get that, really. And I know Naruto, Bleach, and AoT fans feel the same way. But it's not that I don't like SAO because it's popular...in fact, I got into it because it was popular. I'd heard about it, liked the concept, watched the first 6 episodes (the only ones out at the time), and couldn't have liked it more at the time. And, also at the time, I liked Kirito, because he didn't have time to develop yet.

Then Asuna was reintroduced. At the time, I didn't mind. Sure, it broke the rules once, but her being back didn't bother me. I mean, the episodes felt less exciting for some reason (which I now know is because after the first six episodes, the perspective changes from SAO to just the relationship), but it was still nice...until the last episode of the SAO arc. You know the one. That one kind of...broke my trust in SAO. It really cemented the idea that love conquers all, even the rules of a mostly realistic VRMMO trap scenario.

Then Alfeim happened, and it was basically just your generic anime with generic characters. I watched, but I didn't really care. And it wasn't even the generic things that made me not like it. Alfheim wasn't ever focused on. At all. It was mediocre to the level of any other anime, SAO or otherwise. You're average no-namer. And worse, Kirito kept his stuff and there was no grave penalty for death, so really, there was no need to cheer for Kirito who proved by this point that he was an average black haired brood. And I really don't like Asuna, either, becuase there's not really much to her.


But you know what the kicker is? You know what the REAL kicker is? I like SAO. Really. Those first six episodes showed me that when the show (and Kirito) aren't focused on romance, it can be beautiful, mysterious, and compelling. That's why I'm looking forward to Sinon, because she seems like the most developed character to come out of the show yet, and the idea of a season (hopefully) entirely dedicated to GGO, with pacing and everything, shows the prospect of this being the best season yet. I'm not ready to give up on it because it has potential.

So know that I'm not hating on the show as a bandwagoner. My feelings are legitimate, and honestly I do care about where it goes, but the fans, for the most part, really make me worry for the future of anime. Things like that poll just...and I'm not surprised, really, but especially when it comes to someone as flat as Asuna (personality-wise), it's not fair to other characters. Same with Alfheim being popular just because it's SAO. But when I see things like Inazuma Eleven and Danball Senki that are denied localization or get cheap dubs because they're not too popular, because they just don't fit the niche required...it hurts. It really does. Because fans of those things are denied of certain prospects because of that.

Oh, and in regards to the games, they're Action RPGs that play like MMOs. They just happen to have a lot of ecchi, since that's the way producers want to portray SAO, lately. And they get into some really...gray areas. For instance, you can go to bed with any of the protagonists (Sinon and new girl included). And oh, the tentacles.

Well I could see why the concept of love conquers all is a YMMV for people. Though personally the fairly straightforward simplistic fantasy appealed to me at the time and kinda helped me accept such things was that growing up I was surrounded with so much LA-K-C-F-telenovelas that by now I've grown tired of them. Pseudo-complicated romantic BS that becomes very predictable in the end. Sigh. So to me this fairly straightforward you fill in the gaps vanilla boring romance was more appealing than a typical love triangle whatnot.

Anyways this season should be slightly better for you I guess. There's less romance, more characterizations, and action. You probably won't even see Asuna aside from cameo's from flashbacks if they stick to the source.
 
185. Best not to let the tastes of the masses get to you, lest you have an aneurysm trying to understand their tastes.

Besides, the otaku-pandering shows do is to generate more merch sales. The fate of the anime industry was determined years ago, and that fate is to otaku pander as much as possible to sell more merch.

Well it's not so much that I don't like it as a concept on its own. It's more that I don't really like how it's handled here. Like how it breaks the game rather than the characters using their own drive to break through the constraints that the game puts on them. Same with the romance, really. I'm fun with romance, I just don't like it here. Part of it is because I don't like Kirito and Asuna (for now), but also because it feels too...perfect. Too perfect for the time it took to create, and too perfect and sensual for two people so young.

Heck, I'd be fine with unrequited romantic feelings arising in Sinon. After all, I was perfectly fine with the pre-"this is a harem" feelings of the side-story characters.

But yeah, I'll give it a watch, probably while I wait for the premiere of Persona 4 Golden :q

@Don - Yeah, I try. I'm generally good at ignoring it, that's how I've dealt with the big three being so popular for so long. I guess it's getting to me more because it's becoming harder to ignore SAO since, thanks to GGO's premiere, they've been planning a marketing push. Persona 4 did the same thing since the announcement of P4G (the game), what with the anime and Arena.

But yeah, sell what works. I'm just a little sad that it's the anime market that has otaku in their hands, and not vice versa. I guess that's just supply and demand in the most literal sense.

I thought the original P4 anime covered most of the plot IIRC LOL.

And yeah I understand. We'll just see how the show goes, everyone already has their expectations and biases set up anyways so let's just have fun watching hehe.

As for the Anime market...well yeah the Studios are wholly dependent on the local Japanese Otaku market for finding out what's selling or not...with the rest of the world pirating or just watching buffet style through Hulu and Crunchyroll therefore losing market power. So only the really popular stuff gets attention. The collapse of the DVD and BD market in the West pretty much killed the purchasing power of overseas fans.

I seriously start rolling my eyes when Japanese studio execs or Mangaka/LN Authors get shocked that they have a huge overseas fan following or their series is uber popular. Kinda sucks that Japan is also stuck with this "we're the only country that matters" mentality :/

The original P4 anime did cover everything, but it was kinda rushed and wasn't too great in general (but certainly wasn't bad), that's the widely accepted opinion at least and, even as a fan, I'd say it's accurate. Golden added a lot of stuff (with Marie being the most important of them, and she's one of my favorite characters) that can be migrated, but the real reason I'm more excited for this one is because...well, it can fix what P4 did wrong. They can take the opportunity and craft the anime the way they want it to be (even though the game has...what, 3 more added months?)

But yeah, I agree with you. There's a HUGE market for anime and manga outside of Japan, but it seems more like we're only a second thought despite the fact that, if ota-related items had a larger, unified international trade, those who invested in these media would get WAY more money as a result. Because Japan is small and is language locked by a language that isn't widely used.

Oh how sales would explode if things were different. Heck, I daresay media and visual entertainment as a whole could be changed- even revolutionized, if we were to have Japanese media as a widely traded, less-inclusive trade.

Well P4G is in my tentative list so i'll look it up.

That cosmopolitan thinking does permeate a lot of my view points about these things, especially in the stuff I keep up with.

It always saddens me when I find out that there's a huge fan following for a series that's relatively unknown. Problem is, they're in China...its language barrier makes it impossible to communicate with them.

For example, Chinese LN's or Korean Manhuas. :(

The biggest reason the foreign market for anime isn't capitalized on very well by the Japanese is that they want to minimize their risks, and the current setup puts all the risk on the foreign studios that license the series for modest royalties and licensing fees that the Japanese authors and companies get in return for the rights. It's a beautiful setup from the standpoint of the Japanese companies. Though some studios are willing to take a risk as long as they have a foreign partner doing the same, as in the case of Space Dandy.
