To some people, story matters more than gameplay
Look at Call of Duty, Madden, FIFA...
Repetitive gameplay, still sells millions
That'd be great if Pokemon ever had a story worth writing home about. Pokestick pretty much hit the nail on the head. There are plenty of games I would accept that for, but you don't really see a lot of people playing Pokemon for the story, and even in the game where it was "good" (BW), it was really only good by Pokemon's standards, so it's not saying much. Same formula, and despite N it's still a pretty generic team (in fact, without N that's all they are). This, basically.
I mean, if you're looking to Pokemon for story, there are innumerable games of any genre out there that I could point you to that do it better. People can play for story over gameplay, but for Pokemon I'd find it very hard to believe people disregard repetitiveness (the gameplay) for more repetitiveness (the formula).
