It's not over-rated at all. If 30,000 + people play it online MINIMAL then you can't say it is. If you are a Halo fan which you are probably not if you aren't into the save the world kind of thing cause you are probably into more of that role-play/fantasy kind of games. Seriously if you got xbox live and love halo like so many people do, you would know how much fun it was. If you suck it won't be too fun. Lol. I've had the xbox live experience for over 8 months and have been playing this game for that long and I'm still not tired of it because the fun keeps going. It's sort of like a drug.
I used to be into fantasy, but I'm more into SF now. So theoretically Halo should appeal to me.
Obviosuly the story did and Master Chief is still one of my favourite game characters, but not the gameplay.
Oh, and I have Combat Evolved for the PC. Still play it often, and I'm pretty good at it (mostly in top 3 at the end of a match), but I'd rather play other online multiplayer FPS's, such as Unreal, or F.E.A.R. or maybe even Counter-Strike Source (which gets pretty repetitive over a while).
Basically as I said before, the downside are the lack of innovative features.
For example, the Quake series established the idea of online FPS gaming.
Half-Life was the first FPS to put emphasis on story and puzzle solving, and it's sequel put emphasis on interaction with the environment.
F.E.A.R. is known to have one of the highest enemy AI in any game made to date.
Golden Eye for N64 is said to be the first succesful FPS for a console.
Counter-Strike is pretty self explanatory. Most played FPS in the world (and most played online game in the world too), and the official E-Sports game.
The Battlefield series made riding vehicles a tactical importance, not just a fun thing to do.
Operation Flashpoint is made to be very (too) realistic. It was also used by the US Military as part of its virtual training program.
Serious Sam is a FPS played more like an arcade game (scores>story).
Unreal Tournament was the first game to have multiplayer as its sole purpose.
And it doesn't mean that newer FPS game would not have innovative features, because the older games used them.
For example, STALKER, which is coming out next year, will feature a very "free" storyline, and will have lots on focus on survival.
(Like you'll die if you don't eat).
Prey, which is coming out sometime this year will be the first FPS to mix SF with Cherokee Indian myths, and to have an American Indian protagonist.
