Do You Prefer Attack or Defense?

Attack, defense, or mix?

Let's see... my favourite pokemon is Dragonite, Second favourite is Scizor, Third is Salamence... hm, I can see a pattern here...

I'd prefer to have attack, as it creates a problem with the opponent and how to deal with it, which is difficult in strategic games like Pokemon.

Personally, I go for something that hits hard but can take hits in return. That being said, I do prefer attack over defense because I like to take my opponent out before they can do me in. My team is normally split with 4 Pokemon with a high attack/special attack and the other two are my defensive tanks. Normally I use them for tough battles or for healing up my team. However, on my first HeartGold play-through, my Lapras was an integral part of my team just because she was a great tank and could dish out hits too.

My main priority is hitting down the opponent hard. So hard, they won't be able to get up. Basically, I'm impatient so I use Attack. I rarely have walls on my team. That's my weak point in battling. But I have found much more strategy with defensive pokemon as I was able to defeat people with only a few defensive pokemon. So basically offense, but I wouldn't mind using defense as well! :)

Attack really. Defense is useless, sure you can take hits, but if you aren't dishing them back out, how do you expect to win?

Insert random filler here.

Attack deffinetly..i know u should balance it out but they always say a good offense is a good defense right? :P

In-game Attack just because the games are easy so why not finish it. But when I battle with friends it's mixed.

One of my average teams will consist of mainly a Sweeper, a half sweeper and the rest insane defense.

Shuckle is an asset.

So I will have to go with defense. But there is a third category, in my opinion.

I think Walls and Defenders are the same thing.

My Technique:
1. Toxic.
2. Wish.
3. Rest.
4. zzz
5. zzz
6. Repeat.

I think a Pokemon with 1/5 attacking ability and 4/5 defensive ability is my choice. Blissey is alright in my opinion. But it just drags on battles. Especially in-game.... No fun going up against the Elite Four with an almost-Uber pokemon.

I prefer to choose a Pokemon that naturally have high defenses, a move that amplifies said defense, and then a way to heal when needed.

In a hail-based team, Walrien with IceBody works as a perfect staller. Giving it LeftOvers means it increases its health by a decent portion each turn, and then using Protect increases its health even further (And the foe takes hail damage)

And then there are Pokemon like Vespiquen. The unsung heroine of the Bug-types, who can heal with HealOrder, and defend with DefendOrder. And then Toxic adds to the foes damage!

For example, here is what I would do with Walrein.

Protect (Stalling, using the turn to dish out a fraction of damage to the foe)
Substitue (Protects from Status ailments, and means a hyper-powered attack will be numbed)
Protect (Same as the first Protect, and it gives Walrein a chance to heal up from the Substitute)
Toxic (Causes the foe to weep out, with the damage slowly increasing)
Protect (Toxic/Hail causes more damage, and any damage is healed)

From this point, it branches off. An offensive move like Surf or Blizzard works in the Hail, and Subsitiute can be used if Walreins Sub is down. I think Walrein should have a double 'L' in its name. Wallrein

XXX

On that note, in the main game, I prefer sweepers. Mainly because I'm impatient, and training them becomes a pain!

Ususally I just plow weak trainers down with attack moves, but it's good to have a high defence Pokémon to use as a "healing shield" during Gym/League and strong trainer battles. I'd say 50/50 cause I do use a combination of attack/items/switching.

offense is the way to go!

I'm a split mix here. Although I do like my lightning bruisers, they typically cannot perform a OHKO on an opponent, and chances are (especially in competitive play) that I'll be facing an offensive Poké. So, I also try to bolster defenses whenever possible.

The Best Offense Is The Best Offense! "FOR NARNIA!"

In game, do you prefer to have Pokemon with high attack, defense, or evenly split?

I prefer attack, because if the opponent is defeated, what is there to defend?

 :cer_laugh: :pink_laugh:

LOL! If I ever get my signature enabled again, I'm putting that quote in my sig! When I first read it, the way you posed the question "if the opponent is defeated, what is there to defend?" seemed so funny!
I can't describe how I felt when I first read that exactly - the best approximation I can make is that it seemed as you just directed a big old "LOL WUT?" at every single Trainer who ever bothered to invest in Iron, Zinc, Power Belt, Power Band, and/or X Defend for their Pokemon's stats, as well as every single Pokemon with a Bold, Relaxed, Impish, Lax, Calm, Gentle, Sassy, or Careful nature. It was like "WTF is the point of Defense & Special Defense?" Not to mention all of those other defense-boosting moves and items. Alternatively, it seemed like you suggested investing in the defensive stats was something that was unheard of in Pokemon.

Not only did it seem like you directed an "LOL WUT?" toward every Trainer or Pokemon affiliated with the defensive stats, it seemed like you were being serious about Defense and Special Defense being such petty stats that even considering to bolster them would seem unthinkable/insensible. Which makes it all the more funny!

I prefer to attack more than to defend during battling. However, it's always smart to keep one or two tanks with you in case things go terribly wrong. There has been many times when the opponent's Pokemons were able to take down my defenders quickly, so I don't trust them as much as I do to attackers. At least they get the job down, with only minimal to maximum damage to themselves.

Yeah; I hate it when you invest in Defense but it ends up serving not much of a practical use, as your Pokemon can still get 1HKO'd sometimes. And Critical Hits worsen this to an even higher degree...

Attack really. Defense is useless, sure you can take hits, but if you aren't dishing them back out, how do you expect to win?

I agree. You could have astronomical defenses, but you can't win the battle until you get your foe's HP down to zero. And the only way to do that is with a strong offensive movement.

Offense. No reason to drag battles.

I know. I haven't actually delved into competitive battles, but I repeatedly hear about stalling the opponent, a tactic I would most likely get bored with. Previously, I was just going to give all of my Pokemon adequate moves to face the opponent with, but then I realized that some Pokemon will hardly be able to dish out even one hit. So I'm gradually viewing that some Pokemon movesets have to be constructed with defense/stalling/status infliction in mind, to help Pokemon who actually can sweep without getting KO'd on the first turn. But waiting out battles can get so annoying...I just want to one-shot all of the other Pokemon and be done with the matter!

But yeah, even if a Pokemon has astronomical offenses, it means peanuts if you don't have the defense to actually make use of that attack, or if you don't have the Speed to act first to have something to show for all that attack. Personally, I hate investing in Speed, though. If your Pokemon would've naturally been faster than your foe, those Speed EVs can seem completely useless when you could have diverted them to the offensive stats (which are ultimately the deciding factor of a battle) instead.
Plus, even if you have the fastest Pokemon ever with a Speed-boosting nature, 31 Speed IVs, and maximum Speed EVs, if your opponent has the exact same Pokemon, the best you can get for all that Speed investment is a 50% chance of actually going first, due to tying with the foe's Speed. And if your foe uses a priority move that supersedes, all that Speed investment is essentially useless, meaning lost opportunities for investing in Attack. Even if both of you use priority moves, your best shot at moving first is still 50/50.

Defenses can still be vital in Pokemon matches, but they can still be outclassed should your opponent happen to have a Pokemon with monstrous Attack/Special Attack stats.

But yeah, Attacking for me!

EDIT: My 493rd post! Which is the number of official Pokemon available in the games up to Generation IV (encompassing the Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh regional PokeDexes!) :D

I have a mix of both. I love attackers, but I also understand that most attackers are frail. That's why I have to invest some time in raising defensive types.

But honestly, I lean closer to attacking and bulky stuff that do lots of damage.
