Do you think that anime teaches bad morals to girls? I think that maybe it does.

On a lot of websites which I have been to, I see that there are girls who have pictures of highly suggestive-looking anime women in their online signatures. Often these girls are as young as ten or eleven, and yet their signatures contain pictures of anime women who are wearing maid outfits or collars and have a "come hither" look on their face, looking utterly subservient. These poor girls have been taught by anime that a woman's role in life is to be subservient and weak, which is of course not true.

I think that anime has a negative influence on young girls. Do you agree?

I disagree. For the girls, I think that they pay more attention to the stuff that has more spirited girls.

Like for example, Shugo Chara. The main character is a girl, she's spirited and not 'beaten down' or 'subservient' to anyone and she's really powerful. XD

From what I know, Shugo Chara has a LOT of female fans..

That being said, not all anime is 'anti-feminist' or 'sexist' in nature. To think that all anime is that way is a silly stereotype.

I don't see that... A lot of the sexy women in animé are freakin beast. Maya Natsume from Tenjho Tenge has unrealistic proportions but she's considered one of the strongest if not THE strongest characters in the manga and show.

Also, Ivy from Soul Calibur. Oh yeah.

But like aforementioned, not all animé is all loli and fanservice. A great deal of animé does have quite a bit of at least some partial nudity in it, even if it's not intended to be sexual. Like Wolf's Rain, no sexual themes whatsoever, yet nudity isn't avoided.

...or that they can use their bodies to make do whatever they want, depending on how you look at it.

You could have picked far better examples than those. Maya Natsume and Ivy represent a very sexist portrayal of women. In fact, their portrayal may even be more sexist than the typical maids and cat girls, because they trivialize womens' strength.

Really? I always thought Ivy was bad-ass, not because she was a woman but just because she was bad ass.

Like Ayane or Christie from Dead or alive! Actualy most of the women characters in DOA are strong women, like Helena, Hitomi, Tina...the only exceptions are Kasumi and Kokoru, but hell even they kick ass! (maybe not so much kokoro)

My point was just on you saying that they were weak, which they are far from.

In any ways, I've always sort of "grown up" with the fan-service animé, example Tenchi Muyo, and it's never had an effect on me. If anything, it's made me realize the absurdness in the unrealistic expectations - which is what animé exactly is, unrealistic.

It's all just entertainment and some lulz here and there, I'd be more concerned about the effects of real life icons and celebrities' effects on young women, seeing as they are real people who haven't been created to exceed expectations.

You are wrong Jolene. There is nothing sexist about anime. Thinking otherwise is merely overinterpreting things.

Anime is meant to be entertaining. Japanese culture does indeed have some sexism involved but in these current times, I doubt they're any worse than americans.

That being said, girls tend to have more common sense, I highly doubt that seeing sexism would affect them negatively

Japan is country with a lot of problem, and can be an incredibly sexiest country (so much so that a lot of sexiest comments are taken as everyday things), so I'd say it's a lot worse, majority of it just doesn't make it to anime.

I think the age is the main issue here.

If a 10yr old is roaming around on forums and watching animes that are more suited to teens and adults, then thats the parents fault.

Its like the people who say that junk food advertising makes kids fat. I think blaming Anime for a portion of the oversexualisation of pre-teen girls is just a huge cop out for parents not taking enough of an active interest in what their kids are watching/doing.

[/crazy rants of the childcare worker]

But in all honesty, when I was 10 the extent of my anime knowledge was Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, Pokemon, Digimon, Zoids and Dragonball Z, simply because my parents took an interest in what I was watching and if they thought something was inappropriate for my age, then I wasnt allowed to watch it.

Depending on the anime. Most anime is bad, though, and a lot of people take the innocent ones and turn it into porn. Some people even made a Zelda and Pokemon porn. It's ridiculous.

Tachibani Azumi is right. I like Great Teacher Onizuka because it shows this very well. Japan is full of perverts who force the girls there to wear short uniforms to school. There are so many perverts in Japan; it's really a twisted people.

Love Hina is an example of an anime that, though humorous at times, is a bad example.

    Grenadier is also an example.

Pokemon is all right, but the female characters always seem to wear short garments. To appease the Japanese, I suppose?

I'm trying to think of an anime that isn't suggestive in some way, but I'm drawing a blank. Animes always have some sort of perverted content, whether it be giant breasts, short skirts, or crap like Rosario Vampire.

'Will come back here if I think of an anime that isn't provocative. Bleach has unrealistically giant breasts and Naruto as well, so they're out. Not to mention the Sexy No Jutsu.

Do you even know how many pedophiles and lolicons there are in Japan there?
Very few pedophiles. A lot of lolicons. You see, these things are inversely related. The more lolicons you have, the fewer pedophiles you have.

Depending on the anime. Most anime is bad, though, and a lot of people take the innocent ones and turn it into porn. Some people even made a Zelda and Pokemon porn. It's ridiculous.
People make pornographic fan art in any place in the world. You're implying it's a bad thing. You're creating an outlet for people to vent their innate sexual urges. Would you rather them go out and exploit women? That's far common an occurrence in America than in Japan.

I'm trying to think of an anime that isn't suggestive in some way, but I'm drawing a blank. Animes always have some sort of perverted content, whether it be giant breasts, short skirts, or crap like Rosario Vampire.
A few of my favorites have virtually no "suggestive content" in my opinion, but that's a subjective term. Is hugging suggestive? I think everything depends on the context. Cardcaptor Sakura has suggestive themes perhaps (again, subjective), but the most "sexual" thing that happens that I can recall is hugging, and the series itself could actually be called feminist in nature. I can think of other examples where there is absolutely nothing demeaning to women in any way. And I think the implication that the Japanese are less perverse than anyone else is ridiculous, and the implication that being "perverse" is necessarily a bad thing is flat out offensive. As long as you're not hurting anyone, there's nothing wrong with it.

Yeah. Not to mention, in Japan, there isn't as strong of a taboo on showing skin. o.o

The culture in Japan is far different from Western culture. While they have absorbed some of our values, they are still quite culturally the same as before the Western culture started creeping in. They can tolerate Western ideals at the moment, but that doesn't mean they embrace them. That being said, if you think anime is immoral, you should merely stop watching it yourself.

Attacking it and calling it immoral is just stupid, and how do you suppose that'd make a Japanese person feel about westerners huh? They'd turn around and push back! Culture shock is understandable but you have to take it into account. If it's too "wrong" for you then you should just stay inside your shell. :3

Lucky Star and Azumanga Daioh? XD I know of more, but I can't seem to remember XD

Lucky star actually makes fun of lolicons and the like.

Also, there's porn of EVERYTHING, even western cartoons are made into porn, it's not just Anime.

I think I'm worse then your anime.

You should be very afraid of my fiction novels.

They could do worse to childrens minds then anime could.

saying anime teaches bad morals to girls is like blaming your tooth brush for your cavities or blaming poor test scores on your pencil.

if you actually learn bad morals from watching anime, you're an idiot, and so are your parents.

Also, whoever said the japanese are perverted, needs to come to America. We have plenty of em. Actually, go just about anywhere, in any culture, and you'll find them.
