A lot of English dubs are bad. But I did like the FMA dub. Everybody probably says that though, but that is probably the only time that the dub has largely been considered to be better than the original Japanese language version.
 
I thinks so because most of the time the voices annoy me. Like Momiji's dub voice from Fruits Baskets. I have no clue where that came from. But to be fair they do get it right sometimes.

A lot of dubs improve the original.
Like Naruto .
Naruto says Dattebeyo after every sentence in the japanese Anime(Subbers don't translate it,usualy) And not in The American dub.
 
Understanding Japanese is a godsend, because I've seen too much badly dubbed anime. Mostly on Youtube, because it's great to laugh at them.

However Pani Poni Dash has awesome dubbing, save for a few characters. Seems like it's the amount of hard work they put into finding a good cast.
 
The majority of the time, it does....
the more you watch, the more everyone just sounds utterly un-involved with the plot and the same....=.=;
I prefer subbed; not only because everything fits, but because the seiyuu's are their character; they're amazing at emphasis and aren't afraid to talk loudly and exclaim onomatopoeias. We need more bold voice actors like that.

My favorite dubs though have to be...Inuyasha and Full Metal Alchemist. Those were really good; so good I liked them better than the originals xD! Need more of them, but not so much that they're in every anime ^-^;
 
I hate dubbing, especially the dubbed Pocket Monsters. Subtitles are better. If people cannot read that's their problem (unless they are kids and haven't learned yet). Dub is only for children.

I hate subbing, especially the subbed Naruto. Most dubs are better. If people cannot understand spoken Japanese, then that's their problem. Subs are for ADHD-afflicted adolescents who orgasm at the mention of the vulgarity "Dattebayo" and have a singleminded loathing of anything related to the English language.

If dubs are only for children, then why bother translating anime that most children won't watch, like Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, and Elfen Lied?
 
I don't mind subs, at all. They're probably the only way that I can get my hands on older and obscure anime, not to mention tokusatsu and J-Drama, which I honestly would not want to see dubbed. Anywho, dubbing and subbing are both great options, I do like dubbing better, but that's only when a dub has a good cast.
 
For me personally, I love dubs. Especially if I've already seen the anime subbed. It's really interesting to see what voices they pick for the English audience. I'm just fascinated by it. XD;

However, not too long ago I was a subs purist. I judged solely on the early dubbed anime (Pokémon, DBZ, Cardcaptors) and figured that all dubs would be that badly done. But the majority of dubs you see today are very well done. They choose great voice actors and the translations and cuts aren't so blatantly... out of place. :x I really like them.
 
Really, this is a fascinating subject, as a whole. I have to agree with the fact that, at times, the English counterpart could very well surpass their Japanese respective. When it comes to an anime like Cowboy Bebop, or Samurai Champloo, one could practically feel the emotion, in Cowboy Bebop, for instance. Steven Blum really could make someone feel the role of Spike, and I still respect that.

When it comes to a company like 4Kids, they tend to, no offense meant toward the dubbing actors, butcher the anime they pick up. One Piece is the greatest point, such as when they changed every name in the series that had a remote importance. Portgaz D. Trace? If that didn't sound silly enough.

There's also the fact that, well, 4Kids seems to stereotype, if no one ever noticed. With Nico Robin, she spoke with a Southern dialect, if only because she wore a cowboy outfit. Shanks had red hair, so he was forced with a poor Cockney accent? Dracule Mihawk and his Carribean / French accent?

Guess you have to take the bad in with the good. Just be thankful when these animes are saved by people like FUNimation, that actually care about the fans.
 
I wished the DVDs could have both subs and dubs, but most have only dubs.
 
Not Pocket Monsters and Yu-Gi-Oh!. And subbed DVDs are often much more expensive than dubbed. And VHS are often dubbed, but I have some in japanese with subs.

Okay, that's two anime out of the nearly a hundred released a year in the US, still doesn't account for much. And I wouldn't complain about the prices, they're much higher in Japan.
 
Dubs are usually cheaper. Or at least that's what I think. In a shop they sold some anime and I asked why they're so cheap. The seller said it's because they're dubbed. The undubbed anime is usually very expensive so I seldom by them. (Well, sometimes I'm lucky to find it for $3 somewhere, but that's very lucky)

They're cheaper because the English anime industry is one where most of the companies care about their fans and thus don't jack up the prices as much as other forms of media do. Licensing anime is expensive, our DVDs usually come with more than the Japanese DVDs do. The guy you asked probably thought you meant stuff by 4Kids or the generic kiddy anime.
 
the way that the licensing companys know what to license is whats popular with non-japanese fans when it's fansubbed.
