Does Dubbing makes the Anime less-entertaining?

My friend and I were discussing this the other day, we both agree that subs are better than dubs. Although sometimes they may not be translated exactly, subbed episodes on YouTube are much better, since you hear the "original" voice of the character, and can train the ear to pick up certain tones in their voice to express moods. When it's dubbed, although there can be good dubs, chances are it's slaughtered ;_;

Well, disregarding the posts above me, I'll simply state my opinion and be on my way...

English dubbing doesn't suck. 4kids, for the most part, sucks. (when it comes to anime.) But even then you can't say they're all bad, because I think they did an okay job on Yu-Gi-Oh.

When I think of anime dubbing, what automatically comes to mind for me is "One Piece". Because it was just a terrible dub. It just takes me a little moment longer to consider things like Megaman NT Warrior and Yu Yu Hakusho, both anime's I absolutely cannot stand to watch in Japanese. It just makes me cringe to hear Kurama from Yu Yu Hakusho's voice in japanese. As much as 'Zolo's voice in english makes me cringe as well.

But then I also have to think about how amazing the new One Piece dub is, by Funi. They've saved One Piece, and I can't wait to see the new episodes. I might even start watching it in english, rather then Japanese, it's just that great.

So really, dubbing only makes anime less entertaining in the eye of the beholder. I personally think that dubbing jobs can make anime less-entertaining, especially jobs that are poorly done, but they can also be better then Japanese dubs. It really depends on what you're looking for.

So to answer the question the thread title presents:

I enjoy both forms, the dubbed and the original. But, to tell you the truth, I only watched the dubbed episodes to keep up with what episodes are being played here in America so I can discuss the show with friends who don't enjoy watching the original Japanese w/English Subs. Most of the time I watch the originals to keep going because I don't like waiting for the episodes every week when I can watch them online, but don't flame me for doing this because I give the creators their money buying the DVDs every time I can get my hands on them.

Though, there are dubs that I just cannot watch, such as One Piece. I used to read the Japanese manga and then I noticed that Cartoon Network/Toonami (can't remember which one was showing the episodes) were showing the anime and after watching my first english episode of Once Piece I couldn't help but go "WTF have they done to one of my favorite animes." But I've heard the episodes have been getting better, but that episode was a big turnoff for me.

My favorite dubs so far are Bleach, InuYasha, Yu-Gi-Oh (It's okay), and Naruto.

I really think it depends on the anime, take for instance naruto, in my opinion the original Japanese version is way better than the amercian version because the american version is missing alot of the violence and content that make it a good show, not to say it's not good, the american version is good just not as good as the original in my opinion.
Basically it all depends on the show, a show that sucked non-dubbed, will probably not be a huge hit no matter what happens to it but hey that's just my opinion.

Oh yeah, on the subject of DVD's, I love buying them. Because you get both dub, and sub. *shrug*

I just love having the thing on my TV, rather then my puny computer screen. I makes me feel amazing. xDD *fish'd* And I love holding the copy in my hands, and putting the extra stuff that sometimes comes with it everywhere. *fish'd*

Manga, I actually prefer having the hard copies.

So with buying and supporting the companies, it's not so much that, but the fact that I'm aiming to become a hardcore collector. *fish'd*

I agree with мizuκi completely, especially the examples she put forward. :x

I'm kind of sick of the "THEY HAVE NO EMOTION" argument, because frankly, if you aren't entirely familiar with the Japanese language, how can you know how well they express themselves by their standards? I think expression of emotion is the pretty much the same the world over, but construction of sentences and inflections on works is not.

As well, I think the snobbery of some hardcore fans causes them to reject anything spoken in the English language. Not EVERYONE, but some of them.

In the long run, I'm willing to give most dubs a shot. Megaman NT Warrior was better than it's Japanese counterpart, as was Yu Yu Hakusho, and I'm sure they aren't the only ones.

I do think that authentic Japanese productions usually put a lot more heart and soul into their seiyuu, while the dubbers will cut and paste as they please, resulting in lower quality for the most part. But when there's a group (like Viz and blah blah blah) that puts hard work into their dubbing, it usually turns out very well. :3 This is just my opinion though!

in most cases i say subbed is better , there are a few exceptions like gundam seed and the db/z/gt series, there are a few other but thats all i can recall atm, but it just comes done to personal opinion and what your used to.

I don't think YGO has a good dub. I think there are a lot of eisodes (the ones I think are the best) missing in the english version because they were too lazy to dub them. And in One Piece, I don't know about the dubbing, but, they censored someone's cigarette but not the smoke! I would like to see how that looks like.
In the dubbed YGO the names are supposed to be different from the original and that is confusing. I still don't know how to pronounce Anzu's dub name, I've never heard it.

Ack, I hate dubbing. Look what they did to Naruto, mainly Naruto's voice, but there are other messed up ones two, ack! Only some anime's have good dubbing, I hear Full metal Alchemist (however you spell it) Has good dubbing, I have never watched it, But I have heard the rumors!

This is coming from someone who's seen Naruto in both English and the original Japanese: Maile Flanagan and Junko Takeuchi practically sound alike.

Fullmetal Alchemist this, Fullmetal Alchemist that. It's obviously not the only good English dub out there. Sure, Vic Mignogna, Aaron Dismuke, Travis Willingham, Caitlin Glass, and the others did excellent jobs, but they've participated in other good English dubs.
