I've gotten 5 spam pm's in the past hour. From a new member who joined just today with the sole purpose of advertising for her forum.

I'd really like to see something that can prevent this.

I'm thinking that making it so new users can't send VMs/PMs for the first week, or until they have 100 posts (whichever they achieve faster) will be a good way of preventing this.

Of course, they can still recieve VMs and PMs.

I understand why you're frustrated, but this would severely hamstring all new members. Often new members feel alienated because they're new, and to make them unable to communicate outside of posting would be awful for many people. Especially ones that ask for mentors; how are they supposed to reply to them?

Personally i think its a bit unfair to the new users that *don't* intend to spam. Yeah there are a few out there that do intend to spam/advertise/etc, but they can be dealt with easily.

Plus, it'd be harder for many members to communicate with each other. Not many of us use IM or any other communication outside pc.

I also propose that all member that have been here less than 1 year be unable to post images because they might spam pornography.

Really? So a spammer spammed your inbox for probably the first time since you joined and you want to reduce the chances it will happen again from statistical zero to algebraic zero? At the cost of an actually-important form of communication among members?

Wow, this is just awful. 100 posts? Most TC kittens don't achieve 100 posts the whole time they're here...

If we had proper systems in place, we wouldn't have anything to report.

I'll agree that my solution is complete crap, but other then 'report it' I haven't heard any solutions to spam pms. Which, even then, reporting spam does nothing to prevent it.

Reporting is the cure. But prevention has, and always will be, better then a cure.

Edit - At the very least, we could disable vms/pms until the user posts a intro thread in the NU/W secion, and reaches 10 posts.

Intro threads should not be required, I didn't make one. I didn't see the point and felt uncomfortable with the idea. In addition, the 15 post barrier already frustrates enough members. Once again, how do you mentor someone who can't reply to you until they've already posted on the forum 10 times?

I've gotten spammed once. My alt has never gotten spammed. I don't see why this is such a large issue that we need to alienate and inconvenience every single new user to resolve it.

I don't think we should do that. I got an PM from a guy with 2 posts once asking me for help. Although tbh he was clueless and annoying, but it wasn't spam, and I helped him. I never get spammed (well I'm not that popular yet) but what are you gonna do about the people who really need help?

    Guilty of charge ^_^

Ah, well, I guess I should apologize for all the trouble, I knew I wasn't gonna last long here anyway thehtee xD

Sorry guys, nice forum you guys have here! And you don't need to disable pms off a new user just cause of one silly spammer such as myself xD nyaa

A 5 or 10 post limit for PMs only might actually be kind of nice. No reason to ever make it higher than that though.

So you've been spammed once the whole time you've been here, and you want block any forms of communication other than posting for new members? What. I've never been spammed for the whole time I've been here. I honestly don't know what's so hard about reporting one PM, it's not like you're being constantly spammed or something.

What's the point honey, it won't stop anything trust me. ^^

If there was such a limit-chan, I would have posted 5 times and then proceeded to spam, and I'm the problem here. xD

Yeah the issue is that the spammers aren't bots, they're people so it's not a big deal to make legit-sounding posts that take 2 seconds and then go spam away, and it just annoys new users.

There's really no way to stop a user spamming another user outside of banning them when it's reported.

Guys, this isn't the DCC. And regarding PM spamming, please report it rather than posting about it in public...

But anyway, not really for the whole limiting use of contacts thing. Like, at all. New users need to contact mods all the time and if they can't do that then there's a huge and very dangerous communication block. The worst thing a new user can experience is not knowing what to do, not being able to ask anyone, and then being infracted for making terrible posts.
