I think that's a pretty easy question.
OP is driven by some sort of actual plot (or so I've heard), there is (supposedly) motivation to be had, so any respected author would end it nicely and and be done with it (and then spam with the spin offs).
The Pokémon anime on the other hand exists purely to advertise, so as long as the franchise remains popular (and probably for a while after that too) the show must go on.
