So, for starters, what layer modes work best for icons?

I hardly ever change the layer mode unless I make a copy of the image.

What you want to be playing around with is the "layer adjustments"

Mainly the "Curves, colour balance, selective colour, Hue/Saturation, brightness/Contrast and Colour fill" layers.
