Ok, so apparently on a DSi you can play music. Can you play your music while playing a game? e.g. I can play Platinum, but listen to Muse instead of the normal music?
I don't think so. You see, your DSi works as an MP4 player when you are listening to music, so you have to close this 'mp4' and turn it into a game console again in order to play a game. I haven't tested it myself, but it's what logic suggests.

To explain it better, the DSi (and the other DS handheld consoles) do not run on an operating system. This means only one function can occur at one time. So no, you cannot play custom music while playing games.
