The most recent technology advancement in reading are called electronic readers or eReaders. As the name implies, they are simply electronic books. You can buy an eReader, and then buy electronic books that you can open and read on it.

Do you like the idea of electronic books and a device to read them on? Or do you like real copies of books?

Do you own an eReader? If so, what kind? If not, would you like an eReader?

If you have an eReader do you prefer it or books?

I use a Sony Reader for mobile eReaders, then I have a plugin for Firefox that lets me read ebooks on my web browser :D

I'm going to move this to Computers and Technology as it's more about the eReader than the eBook. Obviously, twocows'll move it back here if the discussion becomes more about the books rather than the technology.

    Moving on up

I find eReaders to be quite the neat idea. It saves paper and is more lightweight. The only drawback is the battery life, although batteries go for insanely long times.

I don't have a eReader, but I am planning on getting one soon.

I don't have a dedicated eReader, like the Kindle and family, but speaking from using my iPhone or just PDFs on a computer...

The portability and minimal hassle of a reader sounds interesting, not to mention the accessibility of cheaper books straight over the net all sound pretty good, but I can't help be feel hard copies are better. I've mainly dealt with textbooks, though. So that could be different to a good novel.

Not a dedicated one, no. But my iPhone will serve that purpose for the time being; I have no intention of getting an eReader as of yet.

I used to work for a printing company, one of the largest in the US. We printed book covers, for everything from text books to novels to photographic inserts. After the launch of the iPad, within one month we had the first round of layoffs. I was able to keep my job for about another year until I got laid off last month. So I have mixed opinions on eReaders...

As a writer, eReaders mean more money to the author and publishers for one very simple reason - an eBooks and an actual book typically cost the exact same amount. Yet, when you think about it, it's essentially just a .pdf that's being copied and pasted onto other devices - something that's free. Unlike books, which cost thousands of dollars to create, eBooks need one file that is then replicated, much like how iTunes somewhat demolished the CD industry.

As someone who lost his job thanks in part to eReaders and publishers like New York Times who declared that in 5-10 years they will cease printing in non-digital mediums... I'm apt to snap your eReader in half. (; Despite this, I'd honestly sell my soul for an iPad 2...

I, personally, hate eBooks. I much prefer having the physical thing. I can barely stand audio books - they don't allow me to concentrate, but that's just personal preference.

I'd love a Kindle. I have a few e-books but I simply cannot sit at my computer and read long books. I get antsy, distracted, and it hurts my eyes before long. I've tried reading on my phone and it's marginally better, but the screen is just so small that it's annoying. But I've heard Kindles and its copy-cats are excellent and I'd love to have something compact like that. I'd definitely buy more e-books if I did.

I had a Kindle, and it was wonderful, until it broke, I got a replacement, and that one broke, and I need to give Amazon $65 for a new one. The e-ink screen doesn't work in some areas, and pixels are stuck on the same image in another portion, so about 1/4 of the screen works :(.

Anyway, I loved my Kindle. I could convert PDFs that had small text and read them right on there. It is very easy to turn the pages, and the e-ink is perfect for reading in the sunlight. It was great to be able to read all of my books on one small device. I took great care of it, butthe issue was that it broke very easily.

As much as I love my large collection of books, I wouldn't mind gaining more space by having my collection stored in a small eReader. It's technology, why not go for it? :D

I'd like an eReader. It's worth the try.

Honestly, I prefer the books. xD

I like collecting books on my bookshelf, but I found that having a Kindle to put them on was a lot more convenient, and I probably read much faster because I didn't have to go to the bookstore and look for a book, then buy it. Also, once I was finished with the books, I could put them in the "Finished" collection on my Kindle (which is sort of like a folder), so it wouldn't be on the homescreen.
