    I turned on my laptop this morning (or attempted to) and it won't do anything. It keeps telling me to restore the system, but when I try, it doesn't do anything. I called my mom and step dad and they both say that it's probably crashed, and I really don't want to have to lose all the stuff I've downloaded, saved, and installed. The recovery disc hasn't done any help either. It's an HP Pavillion if that's something important to know.
     
    Sounds like your hard drive has gone, but just to be on the safe side try using BartPE Builder. It creates a bootable operating system for pretty much every Windows operating system (not sure about vista)

    Note: It only works for 24 hours then you have to make a new disk.

    Hopefully you can understand the instructions that the site gives.
    It's an alternative to Microsofts Pre-installed enviorment, but includes a GUI (Graphics User Interface)

    If that does not work then it is probably the hard drive. Oh and you need to set your laptop to boot from disk for it to work, that can be achieved by going to the BIOS settings of your laptop.

    Don't you need a normal Windows disc to create a BartPE environment? If the OP has a HP, its likely he or she didn't get that disc.

    Yea forgot to mention you need a Windows disk. I used a Windows XP SP2 Disk and I had SP3 on my computer. You can just borrow a disk of someone if you don't have it to build the disk.

    It gives me the option of running a system restore or starting the computer normally and neither seem to work.

    Bring us, step by step, what happens.

    When you first turn on the laptop, does a black screen come up, listing different components in the computer as normal?
    Where you can go into the boot screen or the set up screen?

    Then what after that?
     
    Right now, it says:

    System Recovery

    The Recovery System Manager starts from your hard disk by default but you may run this from the disc you have inserted.

    What would you like to do?
    [] Run program from disc
    [] Run program from hard drive

    Neither seemed to do anything earlier. And yeah, it goes straight to that screen.
     
    unscrew the laptop, take out the harddrive and place it into another computer as a secondary harddrive and then backup all your data. You might wanna get an IT guy to do this
     
    Eject and remove the Windows installation/recovery CD from the drive and tell us what happens when it starts up.
     
    I would just suggest running a Linux LiveCD so you can access the data from the HDD, namely your documents, back them up to a USB drive/other and then reinstall windows. If you're not sure what you're doing, then it's best to get someone else to deal with stuff involving booting and recovery. It's not worth messing around with. =/
     
    I agree with Linux LiveCD method. How hard is it to run a CD OS and move files to a backup Flash Drive? Not at all right?
