(Kya sorry for super late post >.<)
Richard hadn't seen his mother the day he left. He had invited her, of course, as well as his aunt. Some of his friends had wanted to organize a going-away party, but he had refused with his usual mild smile. Besides, he had everything he needed with his Pokemon.
Still, it would have been nice if she had seen him off.
"You're someplace far away, aren't you?" a voice called, jerking him from his thoughts. Richard turned slightly from the edge of the boat. A tall man, his hair cut short, greeted him with a wave and he smiled back. Sea mist sprayed his face, and Richard blinked to keep it out of his eyes before facing the sea again. Soon, they'd reach Erientanto.
"You're Richard Weste. Right?" the man continued, leaning against the edge of the boat in a similar fashion to Richard himself. The boy glanced over quickly, a hesitant smile still floating on his lips.
"Yeah."
"Wow, cool! One of the new gym leaders, huh? I'm Ushio Amakie. Awesome to meet ya." A hand was offered, tan and worn, and Richard shook it firmly. He'd gotten better at shaking hands since he had won the Jhoto League, but the contact still made fire dance up his arm. He dropped the grip as soon as he could. "Headed to Pebblestone City, I take it."
"Uh huh."
"Not much of a talker, are you?" Richard simply met the question with a shy look, a light blush decorating his cheeks. "Ah, that's okay. I'm enough of a chatterbox to keep up the whole conversation."
Richard laughed at that. And for the rest of the boat ride, the sun slowly beginning to set as they drew closer and closer to the island, he spent it listening Amakie blather, spent it watching the light that seemed more like crystals in the water flicker and disappear.

There was something especially uncomfortable about being unable to be near his Pokemon. Arcanine and Rapidash could never fit in the car that had been provided, and Murkrow hated such cramped spaces. Richard himself was already cramped, having just barely fit into the backseat. His few suitcases had been thrown in the trunk haphazardly, and while Richard was pleased to visit a new place, he wasn't sure he'd end up in Pebblestone in one piece with the way the driver drove.
Not to mention...
Sneasel.
That stupid Pokemon just refused to go into his Pokeball, never had gone into one. At least, not one of Richard's, and Richard didn't doubt that the irritating, arrogant creature had been released due to any inability to listen or be trained many times before.
So he'd ended up situated right next to the little devil, trying his hardest to not be thrown closer to the Pokemon by the rambunctious driving. Sneasel was doing the same, tossing occasional glares at his Trainer whenever the boy got close enough to touch.
"Finally!" Richard exclaimed, jumping from the car and onto the pavement. "FREE...dom..." he trailed off, eyes growing wider as he took the scenery in. The driver had dropped him off right in front of the gym and his new home. A few gasps and exhales of excitement left Richard as he turned every which direction, trying to take everything in at once. The setting sun behind the mountains, the forest, the gardens everywhere painted with the most beautiful colors. Green, green, green everywhere. This place felt like home. More like home than Goldenrod had.
Sneasel slowly slinked off towards the house, creeping in through the back. He quickly disappeared between the various bushes and grass spread throughout the yard.
Richard, paying no mind, threw open the doors to the gym and ran in. The whole gym seemed illuminated pink and gold and red and orange and every possible warm color and hue to exist, but when Richard blinked it was gone. The only thing that remained was a lavish, expansive room modeled like a garden. Strings of lights hung from the trees, small lanters littered the area. As if on cue to the dying sunlight, everything turned on. And another sigh of enjoyment escaped Richard.
"Okay," he said, snaping himself out of his stupor. He unstrapped his Pokeballs, tossing them all to the ground. With grows and winnies, his whole team emerged, tense with unspent energy.
Murky cawed and nuzzled Richard before taking flight around the gym, surely not going to return until the entire group turned in for the night. Faith started her run around the place, keeping to a soft canter and smelling all of the flowers. Gazing at the lights. Catching up with Murky and trying, failing to get him to race with her.
Richard smiled at his two Pokemon, but he felt hot gazes on his back. He had felt them before, constantly almost, and he smiled at his dog Pokemon.
"Don't you guys want to play?"
Hunt and Arcanine, as a team, approached their Trainer. Sniffed him, nuzzled into his clothes. The boy laughed, placing a hand on each of their head and petting softly. It was regular procedure for the two Pokemon to check him for...well, Richard wasn't sure for what, but he knew they were trying to make sure he was safe. Even when they were done checking, just standing there close to him, they didn't move. There heat was washing over him, and a huge smile broke out on Richard's face.
"Oh, c'mon guys. I know you wanna run. Faith...she's restless," he gestured to the Rapidash, currently sprinting back and forth through one of the paved parts of the gym. Flicking the older Pokemon with his tail, Hunt ran off, barking cheerfully at the horse. She whinnied in return.
Arcanine started to go, only pausing to stare pointedly at his Trainer. Richard blushesd, lifted his chin and returned the stare. Or, tried to. His eyes eventually fell to the floor, hands clenched.
He had done the right thing. Even if Arc disagreed with coming here, it had been the right thing to do. He just...had to get away. Arc would stop looking at him like that once he realized how great it was at the new city. Right? Richard wasn't sure how many more solemn, intense looks he could take from his first Pokemon.
He nodded to himself. He'd done the right thing.
