Experiments [PG-13]

Drake had not laughed with her, but he has smiled, and he hasn't done that in a long time. He was sure he had never been this familiar with some since his guardian. It was quite a surprise to him, being the person he is.

"...What do you want to ask me?" He asked, curiously.

Aura continued twiddling with her thumbs, still chewing on her lip. "What's your opinion of me? Honestly." she asked, looking down at her lap.

She continued chewing on her lip, waiting for him to answer. After a few seconds, she realized her lip was bleeding. She just sighed and glanced over at Drake, waiting.

Drake looked at her, then at his paper, where all his info on all of the Experiments and Materials were listed were listed. He had written all of her battle tactics and habits on it, but that didn't seem like the answer she would be looking for. He put the paper away, and sighed.

"I'm not sure I'm the best judge of people, to be honest..." He felt that this wouldn't be enough, and that he needed to give an answer, "...but...I...like you. You're different. Different from anyone else I've ever met. You're...special."
Drake looked away. I've said too much. He then looked at his tattoo along his wrist, and was silent.

Aura smiled, moving her head down, to stare at her lap again, her hair falling over her eyes. After a minute she glanced back over at him, still smiling.

"That's. . . not what I expected. You're the first person to ever say anything like that to me." she said, folding her arms over her knees, resting her head on her arms, and turning her head to face Drake.

Quite honestly, she had expected him to point out her bad qualities, like that she was weak, a crybaby, and useless. So what he said, was the last thing she expected.

"And, I like you too." she added softly.

Drake was surpised by what he said. Quite a bit of things have happened over the passed few days he did not expect. He had not planned for any of this, and he wasn't sure he knew what to do about it. He realized that this girl was changing his plans profoundly, from Luphen dying later, to sparing people, to even more.

But was she sincere? Or was she just putting on this act because I agreed to spare her for now? He believed her, for now. He didn't know why. He had usually been harsh with trusting others. He leaned over and kissed her on the cheek. For what reason, he did not know. But the result was him feeling very embarrassed. He probably shouldn't have done that. She probably didn't want that.

"...Don't tell anyone I did that..." He said.

Aura's face went bright red, and she touched her cheek. She sat up straight, pushing her hair behind her ears. She smiled again.

"I won't tell anybody." then she giggled, "Not like I have anyone to tell." she laughed lightly. She was actually fairly happy. She enjoyed talking to Drake, it made her feel better. He usually seemed so nervous when he talked to her, unless they were talking about the Experiments.

She smiled at him, watching him.

Drake felt more relaxed than before. He seemed to have calmed down himself. He looked at her.

"You should keep your hair out of your face more often. It looks good on you. We wouldn't want not to see your eyes."

He smiled a bit, but really wasn't used to it so he gave her his usual look afterwards. She has pretty eyes, he thought. He looked up at the ceiling and thought for a moment.

Aura took in a breath and put her hand over her chest, trying to calm down her heart.

Breathe in and out. Just calm down. Gee, why are you acting so weird? she tried talking herself down in her head, it seemed to be working a little, but not completely.

"I'll keep that in mind." she told him, hoping her voice didn't show how flustered she was.

"To be honest, I've never been placed in these kinda situations before, so pardon me if I don't do or say what you want me to. I'm just not the kind of person who knows what I'm supposed to do. All I've known is how to live, how to survive, how to kill..." His voice trailed off.

He wondered what she was thinking. He stroked her face once, his arm then fell to his lap. He looked long and hard at his tattooed arm, the word WITNESS written there. He smiled as he remembered something his guardian told him. He decided to do something. Probably the wrong move. He gazed directly at her and kissed her. He pulled away after a few seconds.

He looked at her for a short while before looking away, softly saying, "That should probably not be said to anyone either..."

Had I done something wrong? Damn it.

Aura felt her breath catch in her throat, and her heart started beating even faster than it was before. She touched her lips, and tried to even her breathing, which she knew wasn't working at all. She was shaking lightly, but that was just because of how shocked she was.

"Um. . . I've never. . kissed anyone before." she looked down at her lap, trying to keep her nervousness down.

Drake looked intensly at his tattoo. He just smiled briefly, then stopped. "Neither did I, to be honest. Sorry. I probably shouldn't have done that. Like I said, I really don't know what to do in those situations. I guess I messed up."

Drake leaned back and looked at the ceiling, deep in thought. He felt a sting at his side, only then realizing he was hurt. He had almost forgotten about it because of all this. He sat quietly, reflecting upon what he had done.

Aura was silent for a minute, finally calming her heart down enough so she could speak without shaking.

"It's okay." she said softly. "And you didn't mess up. Actually, I was kind of hoping you would do that." mentally, she was freaking out. She couldn't believe she just told him that. She bit down hard on her lip, glancing a quick look at Drake before turning her attention back to her lap.

"Hoping? What in the world do you see in me, I wonder? You do realize what kind of person I am, don't you? You really wanted me to do that?"

Drake looked at her even as she looked towards he lap. He wondered if she was just saying this, or if she really meant it. "I find it hard to believe..."

Aura closed her eyes tight, feeling herself getting worked up again. She squeezed her hands together, and bit down harder on her lip.

"Don't be mad." she whispered, still keeping her eyes down. Good grief girl, calm down. You are not going to start crying again.

Aura turned her eyes to him for a second, but immediately turned them back to her lap. She really needed to learn when to keep her mouth shut.

Drake had a private thought to himself. You haven't seen mad, and hopefully you won't have to.

Whether or not she meant it, he replied either way, "You know you're actually pretty cute, even when you're all flustered." He leaned back, then added. "You're not heartless, you know. I don't know why people would say that. I know heartless, and you aren't it."

Aura looked up at him. Did he just call me cute?

When she heard the statement about her not being heartless, she tensed up. "Back home, I was always second best. No matter what I did, or how well I did it, my sister was always better. After a while, I quit caring. I stopped trying. They thought I was heartless, because I convinced them I was, on purpose." she paused. "My best friend turned his back on me." she rolled her eyes. "That's mainly why I quit caring. If I didn't care, if everyone thought I was heartless, then they'd leave me alone, they wouldn't get close to me. Then they couldn't hurt me." she stopped and let her hair fall back in front of her eyes.

She kept her eyes down, not wanting to look at him after her story.

Drake listened, and when she finished, he merely leaned in and moved her hair out of her eyes. He said nothing as he stared at her blue eyes.

He could feel she might have gotten sad again, but he didn't want her to cry anymore. So he smiled at her. He felt uncomfortable doing it, but still did it for a bit. He noticed a bit of blood from her lip, where she was biting. He wiped it off of her. He sat in silence.

Aura took in a deep breath and smiled back at him. Her eyes began to feel heavy again, but she pushed it back like she had earlier. She still had her mind set on not sleeping, she wouldn't take the chance on the nightmare reoccurring.

Despite the fact that she wouldn't go to sleep, she decided to rest for a few minutes. She let her head rest against Drake's shoulder, and looked up at him, hoping this was okay.

Drake let her rest her head on his shoulder. It was actually quite nice. Drake himself needed a rest a little bit. He looked at her for a moment, forgetting about his nagging injuries, enjoying the moment for what it was. He had never expected to do what he had done, but he didn't think he regretted doing it. Drake closed his eyes. He was tired, and needed a rest.

Aura bolted up, eyes snapping open. She'd fallen asleep. Damn it. She rubbed her eyes, trying to wake herself up. Then she started rubbing her temples.

"It was just a dream. Just a dream. Just a freaking scaring dream." she muttered to herself, talking herself down. "Just get up and walk around, yeah, shake it off. No need to worry."

And she did just that, standing, and walking around the room. She didn't go anywhere outside of the room, just walking around randomly, muttering things to herself.

"Damn dreams." she said to herself, continuing walking about.
