Experiments [PG-13]

Drake woke up, hearing voices. He sharply looked around before seeing it was Aura, walking around the room. She was muttering something to herself. He was silent for a moment as he watched her.

"What's wrong with you?" He finally asked. He sat there and stared at her, waiting for a reply.

Aura jumped when she heard Drake speak. Unfortunately, due to this, she missed a step and crashed down. She plopped down, having to blink back her confusion, taking her a minute to really realize what just happened.

"Ow." she muttered, rubbing her sore leg, having fallen on it. She looked back over at Drake. "I'm just fine. Just, um, had a little nightmare. That's all. No big deal." she said, still rubbing her leg, smiling best she could.

Luphen woke up two days later well rested and restored."Damn, that felt good!" He thought as he stretched his bones. "Well, I guess its back to training after I eat." He then went down stairs to cook him so long deserved breakfast. He opened the fridge to notice it was empty. "Well, I guess I got to run to the store."

After he took a shower and got dressed, he went outside to go to the store. He was about to make his ice board when he decided against it. "I need to take this walk." He thought as he started to walk to the near by grocery store.

Drake watched her, and then she slipped and fell. Drake sighed and got up.

"Let me look at that leg, it seems to be in bad shape. He walked over to her and looked over the leg, checking to see if it was broken. "It's not broken, but it is sprained pretty bad. You should sit down for a while." He examined it a bit more, before deciding to change the topic.

"...You have nightmares often?"

Aura looked down, shrugging. "I guess you could say that. Just, ya know, every time I sleep more than an hour. It's really not unusual." she said, smiling.

She figured her best option would be to down play the dreams. She'd had them for the past year anyway, and she expected them. That didn't mean she liked them, but she knew they were coming.

Drake sat down next to her and took out his paper. He scribbled something on there.

"I imagine any kind of dreams are better than not having any." He said, writing on his paper. "I sometimes think I would trade no dreams for nightmares. Not that it matters anyways."

Drake's injuries were sore, but he had been through worse. However, he didn't want to send her out to fight again in this condition. He sighed.

"Looks like we'll be here for a while longer until your leg feels better." Then he remembered something. He got up and started pacing. He remembered the other Material, the woman. He knew she had some sort of healing powers from his notes. He then realized he never asked if they worked on other people.

Drake often looked at the risks and benefits of situations before seeing the best outcome. In this situation, he wanted to call on the Material girl to heal himself and Aura. Then they would be able to continue with their mission. The drawbacks, however, were much more severe. For one, he didn't know if her powers worked on other people. There was also the fact that Jeremy was with her, and he couldn't lie about why he needed those powers. Sure, he could get her alone to come here, but the drawbacks would still be too high because she herself was a Material after the Experiments. Drake couldn't ask them for help. Then he realized.

What if I told them she joined up with me? The Corp said Dead or Alive. What if I told them that I made a deal with her and she would come peacefully back to the Corp if I didn't kill her? Then they could help. But that wasn't the truth, and Jeremy would see that. Unless...

He looked at her and spoke after being deep in thought. "From the way things have been going, I don't think I want to kill you anymore." He paused for a second. "But I must take you back to them then. Would you like to modify the deal, and instead once they are all dead I take you back there?"

This was the only option he could see. He didn't see another. He would either have to capture her, or kill her.

Aura looked at him, considering this. It wasn't really a bad idea. She didn't particularly want to be killed, and she was beginning to care less and less about everyone else. That thought scared her a little, it sounded heartless. No you aren't heartless.

She pushed herself up, so she was standing. Her leg throbbed, and it hurt a bit to stand on, but she could handle it. She dusted herself off.

"Okay." she nodded. She couldn't really think of much else to say. So, she decided to change the subject. "What does your wrist say?" she asked, "I saw something there last night, but I couldn't read it."

Drake saw her stand up. He hoped she would say what he wanted her to say, and she did. He breathed a sigh of what he thought to be relief.

He then looked at his wrist, a small smile on his face. "WITNESS. That's what it says. I can't tell you what it means, though. I don't really know myself. It was the last thing my guardian said to me before he died." Drake was silent for a second. He squeezed his hand into a fist. He had gotten a little soft recently, but he appeared to himself back to normal with a quick reminder of how his guardian died. Now, Drake was ready to kill some Experiments...once Aura and himself got some healing.
Theey would need to go to see the other Materials. They need to be healed, and if that girl Material could do it, then so be it.

"We're going to see the other Materials. One of them I think has an ability to heal wounds. Don't worry, I'll explain it to them. They should agree with me."

Aura nodded. "Works for me." she said, smiling at him. Then as an after thought added, "Oh, and by the way, I'm dyslexic. Just thought I should tell you."

She stretched her arms, then bent down to rub her leg, wincing slightly at the contact, but ignored it anyway.

Drake stopped for a moment and wrote that in his notes. He thought it might be an important thing to remember for later. With that, he headed out the door. They had to find the other Materials. It didn't matter if they were seen anymore, but he still decided to go out through the backdoor to make sure this hideout is secure. He headed off.

They're probably in the inn, they were tired, if I recall.

Drake turned around and made sure she was following for a second.

Aura followed quickly after him, careful not to put too much weight on her leg, knowing that would probably do more bad than good. When she caught up to him, she put her hands behind her head, staring up at the sky.

"So boss man, do you know where we're going, or do you need my help?" she asked, glancing at him from the corner of her eye, then turning her attention back to the sky. After a second, she dug through her pocket, putting her MP3 player back in and flipping to a random song. She kept it on low, something she'd done quite a lot lately, just in case she needed to hear something.

Drake was sure they were at the hotel, but being positive couldn't hurt. He nodded.

"Be sure to look out for the Experiments as well. If they are approaching us, let me know. But for now concentrate on the Materials. I need to find them."

Drake walked, making occasional glances left and right, keeping his eye out for anyone suspicsious.

Aura nodded her head. "You got it boss man!" she said, focusing her attention on the world around her. She decided to focus mostly on the sounds of Jeremy and the fire kid, still looking out for Eric and Luphen, but not paying as much attention. She could hear Jeremy's breathing and followed it, it didn't seem like he was doing much of anything though.

She continued concentrating, trying as hard as she could not to lose their sounds. Suddenly, a sharp pain shot through her leg, nearly causing her to trip. She nearly lost her footing, but caught herself before actually falling over. She laughed nervously, throwing a glance back at Drake.

"Maybe I should focus just a little less on hearing, and a little more on not breaking what's left of my leg." she was more like mumbling to herself. She continued walking.

While trying to balance her hearing and her leg, she spun around, walking backwards again, so she could face Drake. "How are you feeling today? Any better than yesterday?" she asked.

Drake walked silently for a while, until she appeared to lose her balance, trying to laugh it off.

He didn't respond to her question. Instead, he sighed, walked to her, and picked her off her feet.

He continued walking silently for a while, trying not to look at her in his arms. He finally did and said,

"What? You're no good to me with a broken leg." He smiled faintly. Continuing to look around as he walked.

Aura giggled lightly, her face a little bit red. "You still haven't answered my question. But okay, if you don't want to answer that's fine." she said.

She sighed, staying silent for a few minutes. After a couple more seconds of thought, she said, "You know, I'm sure if I can handle being burned half to death by a lunatic, I'm sure I can handle an injured leg." it took her a second, but after she said it, she realized she shouldn't have. Whoops, forgot, I haven't told him about that yet.

Drake tried not to look at her as he walked forward.

"For the last time, I'm fine. I'm been in much worse. This is nothing I can't handle."

He was quiet, then he spoke again,

"And I don't remember the flame Material burning you. I thought you were fine."

"Hey, you're just gonna have to get used to me asking you that question. Cuz as long as I care, I'm gonna ask, and there's really not much you can do about it." she said, crossing her arms.

When his other statement sunk in, she replied again. "That wasn't the fire I meant. The fire I was talking about was the fire that got me afraid of fires....wait, hang on, let me just start from the beginning." she took in a deep breath. "About a year ago, at the end of ninth grade, I got into a little fight with this boy at school. I didn't think much of it, there wasn't really a kid at that school who's butt I couldn't kick half way to Mexico. Anyway, I was beating him, and he got aggravated. So, he decided to bring a few unnecessary things into our little fight. Stated simply, he burned me. I think I was in the hospital for a week. I've still got the scar too." she stopped to breathe, "So this little leg thing, is nothing compared to that."

She stopped talking. She hadn't intended for that to come out anytime soon, but it would have eventually, especially because someone, at some point, was bound to notice the scar.

I know what my flaws are...I try to sound evil, blabber too much...And I'm completely driven by feelings of revenge...I have to let that go...

These were Eric's thoughts as he finished carving the log. He made a nice wooden mask.

Looks good. Just needs a little paint...and something to keep it in my head...I'll glue something to it for that...

Eric went downstairs and ripped a tiny piece of his old inmate rags. The glued that piece to the mask and then tried it on. Fits perfectly...Now I need the goggles...and I'll fit them there...If I can't find them, guess I'll have to make some...

He googled "heatvision goggles" and found a website on how to make them. He chucled as he read the instructions. I've got all these things...Dad keeps them at his garage...

He headed to his garage and grabbed his father's tools, and some welding goggles there. Good. Everything's here. He went up to his room and began to work on his goggles.

Drake listened to her story. It was quite a shock. Actually it was quite depraved, he had only met a handful of people that would actually burn someone, him probably being one of them. He looked around her body, looking for any signs of the burning, but couldn't really see any. He then realize what it must have looked like he ws doing, and he turned away again, his face a little red. He continued to walk towards the inn.

"That must have been quite an event. No wonder you are afraid of fire."

He was silent again.

She smiled lightly. "Yeah, it was." she scoffed. "But if I ever see that boy again, I'm beating him to a pulp." she muttered to herself.

She sighed, placing her hand over her chest. She glanced up. "Drake," she said, "the scar, its right here." she said, pointing to her chest. "In a way, I'm glad it's there, because I can cover it up. It's a nasty little reminder that no matter how tuff I am, there's always someone stronger than me. That I'm never gonna be number one, no matter what." she shook her head.
