Question: How many of you actually name your characters based on their position in your fic? I did that with Battlefront; Dooley is, like, Irish for 'Hero' and Medwin is 'friend' or something like that.

I don't do that. "Hiro" is just a Japanese name (one which my little brother is very fond of) and is in no way affiliated with the English word "hero", just so everyone's clear. Like almost everything I do when writing, I take a tip from anime/manga and just name all my characters rather natural-sounding names. On occasion in anime, a name could actually relate to that character's personality or whatnot, but I think that's based off a Japanese superstition of parents naming their children based on what they expect them to grow up like, or something along those lines. Also, the meaning of a name is hidden in several cases, since you may not be able to understand the name without looking at the kanji written for it (assuming the name was written in kanji in the first place). And even then, the kanji used can sometimes be very symbolic (like parents who used the kanji for "feather" or "warrior" or whatever).

At the very most, I'll have nicknames that seem to directly relate to the character. However, I in no way would use something like naming them another word for "hero" or "friend" or whatever. Names like that just seem like they're breaking the 4th wall and they know they're the main characters.

I assign names randomly and arbitrarily. I get all the characters together in a room and put about 30 little pieces of paper in a hat. They pull a name out, and wham.

Character #2 has gotten the name Susan twice now, though...he's not happy about that. Ya know, it just happens like that sometimes, though. I say, play the part to the best of your ability and move on. End of story. Well, I assign the names at the beginning of the story. You knew what I meant, though.

*tagline?*

My names are all random. They're usually what I think up last in terms of characterization. I spend a few minutes staring at the screen, pondering, then grab whatever enters my mind first and go with that.

I'm kinda random with names (although I DO have a tendency to have theme teams in my fics).

Sometimes my character names allude to something else...but...most of the time its just a name ^^'

*pounds head on keyboard* Obviously neither my rants or anybody else are getting through to you, so we shall try logic:

1. You. Are. A. Good. Author. Period. If you weren't, we would be telling you, whether gently or harshly, in no explicit terms. As it is, we believe that you are good. If you don't believe that, we'll still think it. Besides, you have a style. XD
Style, shmi...uhl? Sure, let's go with that.

Here's the story behind why it's seem that I don't have faith in my fics:

I just don't. I don't think they're cut up to whatever everyone believes them to be. Then again, all my reviewers lately are one-time posters (especially at ff.net where I believe it's one person posting on different names for the hell of it). Eh. :/

2. If you're too dumb for this 'elitist' crowd/thread, then what am I? I have zero successful stories here to mah name, while you have what, two? Three? And yet I'm posting here with impunity. Yes, it may be because I'm crazy, but you must remember that I'm not insane. I still have Human feelings, including the sense that I'm not good enough. THAT was beaten into insensibility by looking at the n00bies. I KNOW I'm better than them, and that's the only thing you need to know to become a successful author. Wait, that didn't make sense... XD
Just because I'm an okay writer doesn't mean I'm smart. I already have a C in Physics and it's been what, five weeks? XD

Well the story ends with Brendan standing on a land mine and then eveyone dying. Therefore, there's no point in solving the case. :3

Hmm . . . I think I named that girl from Stitches Kali which is the Hindu goddess of pain I believe. Other than that, whatever seems to fit the character really. I'm a fan of names that start with J for some reason though.

Yeah [insert forbidden forum here] does have a lot of badfics obviously. And I believe we don't have any more authors/reviewers to guide them anymore. No, I don't mean reviewers. Wait, we still have reviewers right? XP

I'm LaTeR dAyZ-ing my posts again from now on because everyone seems to be getting tag lines lol.

Sure, there's a bunch of bad fics at Serebii, but there are also quite a few good ones that do everything better than me, period. Except maybe obsession with Scyther.
So which are you in? The good part or the bad part? Are you at the bottom with the n00bies or are you higher than that?

That seems to be the problem with randomly handing out names. The guys get names 'Susan' or 'Mary' or something like that and the girls get names like 'Chuck' and 'Alfred'. XD

I've done that several times, and the names always seem to fit. XD

XD So sometimes they're a tad deeper than you might think, and other times they're almost normal? XD

Typical author mistake. You know what went on behind the scenes of your story, like the paragraphs that you slapped in while in a rush to get the chapter done, the rewriting of a sentence or two that you STILL don't like, dropping what you viewed to be the best plot thread and substituting one that you didn't like as much, etc. So you think that everybody else should be able to see them, too, and they don't, and that makes you uncomfortable, and the situation deteriorates from there.

However, the end product is still something that your audience has enjoyed immensely, so you can think what you like. XD
Just because I'm an okay writer doesn't mean I'm smart. I already have a C in Physics and it's been what, five weeks? XD
*slaps forehead* Oh, no, she's listening to the public education system. Now we'll hafta find all sorts of ways of showing her how good the public education system is in dumbing down the students. Maybe I'll just sigh and try to prove to you that you're not dumb.

Physics is not relevant here. I happen to be bad at advanced calculus. Am I dumb? I can't fix a car to save my life. Am I dumb? I can't debate worth a hoot. Am I dumb? The answer is no. I just happen to be better at daydreaming, so I'm a writer. The question is, if I'm not dumb, and there's a million and one things I'm not a professional at, what does that make you? Even if you fail at Physics, or Geometry, or whatever? Which, I might add, you HAVEN'T. You're normal, just like the rest of us. And I'm probably one of the lousiest psychologists on the planet, so I'll refer you to the book 'Psycho-Cybernetics' and leave it at that. XD

I think you need a smile. So here: XD 8D ^_^ 8> etc. XD

Stitches... I still haven't figured out the other Pok?mon... No more hints?

You can say Serebii out loud now. If we hafta put up with Niko's anti-emo, he can put up with an evil green forum. Especially since we're all agreeing that it's going to seed, and it's not got the nice taste that PC does. XD

Random though that popped into my head when I read that: let's evacuate all the good authors and bring them over here for relocation. XD

Yes, there are reviewers sitting around there. And good authors. They just keep getting lost in the shuffle of badfics/authors.

I'm LaTeR dAyZ-ing my posts again from now on because everyone seems to be getting tag lines lol.
That's, like, a Breezy tradition! You HAVE to LaTeR dAyZ your posts! *begs forgiveness for typing the Breezy tradition in his humble post*

Then you are a good writer, not in the class of some, but better than many. Being voted 'Best Author' in Serebii does not, and never will, make you the best author, for there's always somebody better. It DOES, however, mean that you were considered the best author at SPPF by the majority. You can choose to think that all the people who voted were n00bs who had read only your stuff and not anything by Burnt Flower or Serpent Syra, but realize that a lot of voters were people who have read widely enough and are smart enough to know that you WERE, in fact, best of the pack for then. Besides, every year there are more people reading more fics, so that excuse is losing ground. XD

This is random and I don't really know what we're talking about, but the last thing I read by Serpent Syra was total crap... unless I'm getting people mixed up.

EDIT:

Just checked, yep, it was him. And it was awful, laughably so. N00bishly awful.

Which only further helps my thesis: 'If you are only famous at SPPf, it means less than nothing.'

I've never read any of his stuff so I wouldn't know how good he is.

Heh, I'm sure he'd be flattered to hear you say that. There was this huge fight on Serebii a while ago because somebody thought he was a girl, and he's still really sore about it. A little while ago he went and chewed somebody out about it because they were joking about it and he didn't appreciate the humor.

o.o I could've sworn...

Meh. Gender aside, who has read his stuff besides Act?

I have. I wouldn't say it's quite as bad as Act made out, but yeah, I find it rather painful to read.

In the sense that it's hard to decipher. It's not n00bish as in not knowing the English language, it is in the sense of trying too hard to prove how much of the English language is known.

But the "OMG!Description!" crowd love it.

Just wondering: do you mention PokeMarts (or any kind of store) in your fics?

I'm just wondering because I rarely see it pop up. It makes the Trainer seem that he/she is just getting stuff out of nowhere. Now, I'm not saying that a Trainer shouldn't be given Pokeballs from the Professor at the start of a journey. I'm just wondering how they'd stock up on supplies (as well as to get the money to buy them).

You had to be in the chat. XD

Yeah, he does tend to go overboard on description, but a good chunk of readers at sppf love it. It's hard for me to pay attention during his fics most of the time because I hate reading nice, fluffy description. I like the bare basics where it's just enough for me to get the point and see it.

Of course, I haven't read any of Rawr Ry's revised or new fics, so I shouldn't say anything. I glanced at one, but they style seemed similar.

As for Neko's question, I use Pok?marts a few times but usually they're
sentences like, "After Blankity Bob went to the Pok?Mart..."
