None other than the incomparable Patrick Stewart. Why? Do I even need to answer?
Okay, well, answer: because he's a very talented actor. That's really the important thing. Sure, I like that he's also Captain Picard, but I've never seen him in a role that I wasn't impressed with.
^ Yup, I really like Gary Oldman. My sister is a HUGE fan of him, and in turn, has gotten me to become quite the fan of him myself.
Another (perhaps obvious?) answer is Benedict Cumberbatch. I've seen him in a few episodes of Sherlock (again, through my sister), and then more recently in Star Trek Into Darkness. Now, I feel like I should go back and watch Sherlock...
Gotta be Hugh Laurie for me. Big House fan, and he pulls off that American accent brilliantly (haha stereotypical British adjective). I never knew he was in Stuart Little until a while ago though, which was very surprising to me. I mean obviously he has had other roles, I just wasn't familiar with them.
Toss-up between Mark Rylance and Daniel Day-Lewis.
Day-Lewis has the most Best Actor Oscars in history for a reason, and that's because he's amazing. Rylance is more known for his theatre work (where he gave one of the best performances I've ever seen in Jerusalem and will be seeing him again in Twelfth Night shortly) but still absolutely breathtaking in nearly any role he sinks his teeth into. Both are really similar in the level of intensity they can bring to a given role as well as their physical appearances. Try to guess which one is which:
Gary Oldman! I first saw him in Air Force One back in the day and everything I've seen him in since then has been great. To the average person he is best known for his role as Commissioner Gordon from the Dark Knight trilogy. There is a show being produced by Fox due to be released sometime next year. It is called Gotham and will take place before the days of Batman (or should I say nights?!). It's going to be about "the origin stories of Commissioner James Gordon and the villains who made Gotham City famous". It's too bad Gary Oldman won't play him though. I'm not sure what the ultimate reason is, maybe money or scheduling conflicts, but it takes place years before Batman so I'm sure they want someone younger to fit the part.
David Tennant... He's so genuine and funny in interviews. Let's not forget that he was the Doctor and also in Harry Potter! Personally, I think he was the best Doctor but all the Doctors are wonderful.
I'd probably say David Tennant. He's been my favorite doctor in Doctor Who and he was great in Harry Potter: The Goblet of Fire. Besides him I'd say Benedict Cumberbatch. He did a good job in the new Star Trek movie and does a phenomenal job in Sherlock. I haven't watched much British media recently so I can't make much more comment.
I'm rather surprised no one has said Tom Hiddleston. He's such a wonderful, down-to-earth person. He's certainly my favorite. Though, following Tom, there's Benedict Cumberbatch, Ian McKellen, and so many others.
Benedict Cumberbatch and David Tennant. Their acting in Sherlock and Doctor Who respectively was brilliant. Benedict has landed himself a bunch of other roles and was wonderful in Star Trek:ID. I've not seen much of David since DW but he's still been doing a lot of things, I just haven't been interested in watching them (aside from maybe Broadchurch). Tom Hiddleston is another obvious answer but he really is a superb actor and one of the most polite, considerate, well-mannered gentlemen on the planet.
I'm tempted to say Matt Smith (he wrote a Birthday card for me on my 15th Birthday, since we were born in the same town and my Nan got in contact with his Mum), but if I list too many more actors then it kinda defeats the idea of choosing a favourite.
(But Ian McKellen too 'cause he came to my high school a couple years ago and did his 'YOU SHALL NOT PASS' thing at the front of the assembly hall, it was awesome. Gotta love Gandalf.)
Which still counts as British until at least next year. :P
Anyway, as an Englishman I obviously have seen a lot of British actors since I have to watch British TV. Despite that though, I'd say most of the choices so far are pretty fair. David Tennant is cool (though Christopher Ecclestone was a better Doctor), I love Hugh Laurie due to Blackadder and he was good as House too even though I'm not a fan of the program, Gary Oldman, Christian Bale & Anthony Hopkins are also good shouts.
My own personal contributions to consideration would be John Cleese, he isn't my favourite, but he deserves a mention. Mainly for Monty Python & Fawlty Towers, but I also appreciate some of his smaller roles like Nearly Headless Nick in Harry Potter. Also Chris Barrie who was great at Rimmer in Red Dwarf and I liked his minor role in one episode of Blackadder.
I'd have to say my favourite is Rowan Atkinson though. Blackadder, Mr.Bean, Johnny English and even Rat Race to an extent. He has been a great comedy actor despite performing a variety of different characters. I'm mainly giving him it for being Blackadder as it's probably my favourite ever British TV program (Red Dwarf being the only strong competition) and one of my favourite overall programs.
