Thoughts on the remake so far?

I like how big they made Barret. He looked like a pansy in Advent Children, but now that's corrected he looks as buff as he was in the original FF7.

- PADDING. There is a huge difference between fleshing something out and padding it out, and this is most definitely an example of the latter. A lot of narrative is...pointless filler. It's not BAD, but it's not NECESSARY, and considering this is only a third of a game, it doesn't really justify being only a third of a game. It feels like an unfinished product.
- The new voice acting is alright, although whoever thought Tyler Hoechlin of all people would make a good voice for Sephiroth is...well, wrong, frankly. He has absolutely no presence and he's a terrible fit for the character. But Jessie is absolutely on-point, and Barret isn't too bad. Cloud sounds pretty much the same, but I blame that on the writing: hard to have an emotional range in your role when that role has no personality to speak of.
- For fuck's sake, Nomura. Not everything needs mysterious cloaked figures. It's not even that good of a plot device. This is Final Fantasy, not Kingdom Hearts. Get your stupid robed wraith things out of my face!
- Jessie is definitely the best girl. I'm so glad they actually gave her a personality in this - god knows someone in FFVII needs to have personality. Even if she's only a side character. I actually like Jessie a lot more than I thought I would and I'm sad she isn't in the game more.
- The combat is alright. It's better than the clusterfuck that was FFXV and KHIII, but I think that's primarily because there isn't any aerial combat involved. It still feels like you're either running on ice or wading through waist-deep water, but it's a lot more responsive than their previous efforts and I think they're slowly but surely improving their real-time combat. I think in maybe two or three more games it'll feel as good as the Tales series, but they're definitely not there yet. It's functional, though.
- Outside of combat, controls are...alright. But there are some more awkward "platforming" sections - most noticeably swinging - that really don't hold up well. Also...the occasional slowdown as you can't run ahead reminds me uncomfortably of Star Ocean 5.
- The game is very pretty, but it's also a mess. I actually got lost in the underplate before Reactor 5 because it was just SO DAMN MESSY. It's a bit of an overload of detail and tbh I feel like you NEED a big TV for it.
- The music is a mixed bag. There are some tracks I absolutely love, and some that, whilst they don't sound great when listened to separately, are great in-game...the Airbuster boss battle is a fantastic example of this. But others are a complete mess. I've heard the Remake version of One Winged Angel and it sounds absolutely terrible. What were they thinking?
- Significant lack of rubbish mandatory minigames. I approve. The crappy minigames are one of the main reasons I dislike the original FFVII so much.

Overall though? Yeah, it's fun. I'm enjoying it more than I thought I would. But it's very...FFVII. As in, no, it definitely doesn't deserve the amount of praise it's getting, and there are definitely better experiences to be had out there.

I've checked out the Reception section under the Wikipedia Article for the Final Fantasy VII Remake. As of its critical reception, some reviewers have critically-acclaimed the game, while the others have actually did the same to it, but instead given it generally positive critical reviews. So, do you think that the Final Fantasy VII Remake should've been as fully critically-acclaimed as the original PlayStation version of Final Fantasy VII?

It's obvious certain sections were "filler" and added to stretch the game out given we're relegated to spending the whole game in Midgar, but I still had some fun it. There is some nostalgia speaking, and despite the ending still making no sense to me, I still wanna see where they go from here with the story. I just hope they don't cut out the prison section that was in the original. I really wanna see Dyne!
