I know you can beat Gen 3 using just Mudkip, or HGSS with Totodile, since they can learn all the necessary HMs so you don't even need an HM slave. But, you can't avoid receiving gift Pokémon such as Castform or Dragon Den's Dratini, and iirc in certain games you must also have at least two Pokémon for a mandatory double battle, like the Psychic Gym in Hoenn or Dragon Gym in Galar. Which means, technically, you'll have at least two Pokémon at some point.
So does anyone know if this is possible in any of the main games?
-Starter must never evolve because that would add another dex entry.
-Starter must be compatible with all the HMs required to progress (if any).
-No mandatory gift Pokémon (eggs are ok since you can box them before they hatch).
-No mandatory double battles.
