Forced tutorials (how to use a pokeball) have been in the game for ages, but it gets really really boring. What do you guys think about them?

I think it could easily be fixed by not showing the tutorial when you say "No".

I know I'm gonna cop flack for this, but I feel like Game Freak won't be ditching the tutorials considering there's always going to be new people playing Pokemon for the first time when a new game comes out.

I also know that many veterans want it to be optional but I know Game Freak caters the main part of the game to the target audience, which is usually kids.

But if people say "Yes" (Which new people should be doing) They will get the tutorial.

Getting optional tutorials in the game is something older fans want, and I heard all the jargon that Game Freak doesn't usually like looking at fans' ideas.

As much as I don't like them, you have to consider the target demographic of the Pokemon series in the first place. I feel this is mostly something that older fans would have to bite the bullet and deal with for the most part, regardless of how annoying it is. After all, some kid might just be getting into Pokemon for the first time by the time S/M release; we can't make assumptions that every kid has been in the Pokemon series for years, as Gamefreak, as a business, would profit not just by keeping older fans interested, but attracting newer ones, as well.

That being said though, I'd still love for the tutorials to be optional, but I think in that case everyone (including the people that really don't know) would skip them and it would be a waste of time adding in the tutorial feature anyway.

Would we really need them anyways? I think it's simple enough to tap "Items" if you want to use items.

She has a strong point here, every new generation of Pokemon has a fair share of introducing kids to the franchise who have never played a Pokemon game before plus attracting newer fans as well as keeping older ones interested helps Game Freak make more money from Pokemon game sales so that they can work on more Pokemon games. It's a cycle that always repeats.

I don't really think anything of them, because I don't think too much about them...

Though I guess I do tend to groan a bit durring that How to battle part. I know how to battle! I think the battle stuff is pretty straight forward as well. Just choose and attack and select it.

But catching a pokemon isn't a straight forward, you have to weaken the sucker and then throw the ball. Even if they made it optional, I'm sure many people would skip over it and end up hitting google. Hehe, even though someone kinda already said it.

I will say it too, because it's true. Games that have tutorials that give you the option to skip, I normally take that option. Because I want to get to playing nao!

Heh, I never learn, but thanks to Google-sama I can be saved.

I'm... not... fond of forced tutorials. It would help a lot if there was a spin on it; in R/S/E instead of having a character show you how to catch a Pokemon you instead were teaching someone else how to do it; if they had that or just had them optional it would be a lot better. I am aware Pokemon is generally played by kids but it's not that hard to figure out how to use a Pokeball or a Potion; if the kids playing Gen 1 survived with optional tutorials I'm pretty sure today's kids can too, especially with the fact that they can just Google what they don't understand.

I honestly don't mind the tutorials, and I've played every game release, most multiple times.
Really it makes sense why its there, and its a whole what? minute maybe? of your time it takes up, once you pass it you dont need to think of it again until you restart the game.
You're going to see the animation of catching a pokemon atleast 25? times (went for minimalist for something like nuzlocke), adding one more, doesnt ruin the game

You have a point. I don't find tutorials long at all, and I feel like the only time it felt long was in Diamond & Pearl which were generally slow games as we know it is. The catching animation is also something you'll get used to anyway since it is one of the things we have to do in Pokemon games.

Why not just have an option in the settings to turn tutorials on/off? By default, it would be set to ON, but players will be able to turn them off. It kind of makes sense to add tutorials, because every gen brings new players. They should bring back Pokemon catching tutorials, though, because when I played my first Pokemon game (Diamond) I thought you caught a Pokemon by making it faint.

They DID have a Pokemon catching tutorial in Diamond though. Either Dawn or Lucas shows you how to catch a Pokemon once you leave Sandgem Town, and give you some Pokeballs to catch Pokemon with. They've had a catching Pokemon tutorial in every main game so far, and the only gen in which it's optional is Gen I, where if I remember right you could refuse the Old Man's tutorial. I may be wrong there because it's been a while since I've played.

There was? I must have forgotten. I last played the game in 2010.

In G/S/C, an NPC asks if they could teach you how to catch Pokemon and you have the option to say no. Maybe they should do that in Sun/Moon. Also, since it's implied that the player might have some portable computer-like device, it could have a help feature like the Teachy TV from FR/LG that new players could use if they need it.

I have a 6 year old son and Sun/Moon will be his first game. I want him to learn as much as he can by watching and learning. So yes, I still want the tutorials to be a part of the game.

To be honest, I don't understand why people are so annoyed by the required tutorials. They generally take, what, 30 seconds? How much progress could you really make in the time that would otherwise be spent in a Pokemon catching tutorial?
It's not so much that our time is being wasted; the problem is the game is making you sit through a tutorial that teaches you something you already know. For people just starting it's good, but for people who have played every main generation of Pokemon it just feels like the game is holding your hand. Tutorials are a necessary thing for newer players, but it's for the best if that knowledge is easily accessible if you need it, but not shoved in your face the moment you get a Pokedex. It's even more jarring considering there's really complex mechanics in Pokemon battling and breeding that are never explained to the player outright or at all, stuff that is really important that you can really only find out more about on the internet, and instead of cluing you in on stuff like IVs or STAB or things like that the game leaves you to your own devices in that area and instead insists each time on teaching you something basic like how to catch a Pokemon every time you restart the game through an unskippable cutscene.

I guess we can thank our lucky stars that the game isn't this insistent on teaching you every tiny thing in an unskippable cutscene like how to use an item or make a Pokemon hold an item or how to walk forward.
