Seeing how the two are very different things, how do you define a friend compared to someone you just hang out with at school?

This being a question based on offline relationships, of course.

I dunno, I've never put a big meaning on the word friend. Best friend took a little more time and perseverance, but a friend is a step-up from acquaintance, in my opinion. I have many friends at school. I have few best friends at school.

A true friend is someone who I can tell secrets to without worrying they'll slip. A buddy is a person who I hang out with, etc.

Friends they know my family they are tight with me. Buddies are just people who sit with me in my math class.

There are different levels of friends to me.
You could call them buddies, but I wouldn't because I feel like a jock douche with a pair of shades and a red high school jacket from 10 years ago calling them that.
I don't have any close friends IRL that I can trust with everything, but I have plenty of friends that I can trust with most stuff.

I only have friends and acquaintences, there are no 'buddies' in between as I will not seek the company of relative unfamiliars to reside with during idle time. I tend to lack much enthusiasm for either though; the difference between them, then, is that friends usually have either a charming stupor or respectable skill that makes me like them back, or they're just in my face enough that it becomes natural to get along well.

I think I make myself out to be a bit of an antisocial arse there, but it's important to remember that I don't dislike anyone and will help others if it is convenient; I just generally like to keep a social distance, like personal space but mentally.

I never say buddies, but I suppose a buddy is someone who I can just have a normal talk with on any given day. A friend is someone who I go out of my way to invite over or tell secrets to.

A true friend to me is one who can understand me and how I am. Someone who would be able to stick up for me and not hide things behind my back. Hiding things just shows a status that is obscure and weak. :x

As for a buddy, someone who has conversed and had a discussion with me a few times but doesn't know me to the superlative or to the most to trust and believe.
Though I carefully pick my friends because you never know what they can do to hurt or offend you. :(

Hmm never actually thought about this til now. In my mind a friend would be more than just someone I hang out with. They would be someone I can trust with my feelings and I know they got my back.
Buddies would just be the ones that I hang with sometimes and I talk to sometimes. Wow that was a vague defintion... :/

I never knew there was a distinction in terminology between "friend" and "buddy" until now. :o

In that case, I've never had any real friends, just buddies.

Buddies are just people I get a long with fairly well, less than that would be more of an acquaitance.
But friends are people I hang out with on the weekends, or for pc, people I talk to often, generally on msn. But they're people I can talk to about personal stuff, or feel like talking to me about that.

Well buddies are probably my school buddies ;), they just know me and hang out together while my friends knows my secrets and family that respects us.

Friends hold a special meaning to me. The people I hang out with at school I consider "buddies". Actual friends there are far and few between.

Exactly. I have lots of buddies and very very very very few friends.

I'm sure this is redundant with what other people have posted, but to me friends are people you can confide in and trust and they're the ones who would do the thoughtful, loving things when you're really down in the dumps, or whatever.

Um, well, considering the OP's general definition:

Best friend - Someone I constantly talk to, trust my life with, and share deep secrets, dreams and fears with!
Friend - Know family, house, favorites, etc and hang out on the weekends
Buddies - Help with homework or project, ask for gum, have a casual chat, hang out at school
