Part 01 - Arriving in Alola
After confirming that yes, I did indeed speak English, I started casually neglecting my mum's request to pack my belongings and continue browsing YouTube for the latest cat videos. Suddenly a message appeared from Alola's very own Kukui, although like me, his preparedness was not on point at all. Also, why is he sending this in the evening? Morning would surely be better for conversing in a social manner. He starts explaining that Alola is made up of reasons and for this reason and this reason alone, it's home to nothing but rare and cool Pokémon. To demonstate this, he casually releases this sort of creature that can only be described as neither of these things - then contradicts himself about rare Pokemon saying we can find them all over the place. After confining it to neglect for the next five minutes or so, he starts asking some personal questions and mysteriously wants my face. I give him a false name (Woody) and make a mental reminder to change my outfit when I arrive. He ends the call by comparing my name to a Thunderbolt and that he can't wait to see me. This sounds suspicious but my mum has already asked me to help move some boxes so I don't dwell on it.
Flying out to Alola was pretty uneventful. I remember falling to sleep on the plane almost immediately after it took off, waking up only to get to the house and then consequently go straight to my new bedroom to sleep through the day. As bland as it possibly could be. Also why are we located away from the city and not in it? Why must I walk there? These questions take a backseat in my mind as my mum's Meowth wakes me up. I can't really hate the guy, he's just doing what his mother told me but dammit, let me sleep. I go to see my mother and she's enthusiastically asking if I'm looking forward to Alola. Truthfully I am...but I can't let her know this so I shrug and receive the forthcoming lecture on having a bit of wonder.
The doorbell rings and I go to answer it...not that I needed to as Professor Kukui invites himself in. Oh my...I thought it was just the evening wear settling down but no. This guy casually has his nipples out anywhere he goes. That's not going to get annoying or anything. Not to mention he practically ignores me after he sent the message and instantly starts to get on a first name basis with my mum. Jeez...and apparently my mother has a thing for him too, 'loving Alolan Pokémon' covering this up.
But suddenly I'm brought back into the conversation as Kukui tells me I'm getting a Pokémon. What?! Geez finally, took you long enough to gather my interest. Although not quite yet, I'm told to get my hat and bag to protect me from the sun...yes. Despite it being evening, I must be protected from the sun. My mum and Kukui make some more small talk before Kukui decides we're going to Iki Town. Alright I guess.
We start walking up what is apparantly Route 1 to head to this town. Along the way, Kukui stops to ask me some questions, of which I am not interested in, as well as talk to this kid, the first obstacle in my path to getting a Pokémon. He stops again to tell me something completely irrelevant as I don't have a Pokémon, and stops again to drive the point home further that without Pokémon, I am a waste of oxygen in Alola. Finally, we actually make it to Iki Town before the sun can actually rise.
Iki Town is nothing special, particulary when the Kahuna isn't around. I get told to look around for the kahuna...alright fair enough. But then, Kukui says something utterly stupid that I can't help but question how he got to be professor. The Island Kahuna...is meant to look like a kahuna. Kukui, just shut up. Besides, there is this girl who is currently more interesting since I actually know what a girl looks like.
I end up stalking her to the Mahalo Trail and she keeps talking to her bag. It's not too late for me to turn around is it? Well, I am curious to see why she's talking to her bag. Upon making the clearing, I clearly see some sort of gas cloud being attacked by Spearow on a bridge to some ruins. Good going Kukui, Spearow are in Kanto too you compulsive liar. The girl turns to face me and she looks desperate for help. I could just turn around, but I guess better save 'Nebby' because she clearly won't. So I, without any Pokémon, risk my life for this stupid gas cloud. Why is this bridge so rickety? God damn, and it breaks just as I get to 'Nebby' too. Although, I don't hit the ground, this other, much more capable being saves me before flying off. The girl is relieved to see 'Nebby' safe and gives me this rock that the aforementioned being finds. Wait...is she testing me and is the Kahuna? Turns out, no, she was utterly helpless. Well, she did give me this rock so there's that I guess. The gas cloud goes back into the bag and by virtuing of her asking and me being too weak to say no, we end up walking to Iki Town together.
Kukui greets us upon us entering Iki Town and I learn that the girl's name is Lillie. But finally, the Kahuna is back to give me my first Pokémon! The situation is quickly explained to him (finally, people get to the point), although I did learn that Tapu Koko saved my butt from before. Enough of that though, the Kahuna (called Hala) brings out three Pokémon, the Grass type called Rowlet, the Fire type called Litten and this utter abomination called Popplio. Apparently I get to choose one, so naturally I choose Rowlet! Wait...Rowlet has to choose me too? Piece of cake, I'm pretty likable. Here comes the smoulder.
But Rowlet shakes his head and I begin to fear the worst - I'll be forced into choosing Popplio. I frantically start patting my pockets trying to find something to entice Rowlet with...but suddenly he comes flying over! Has he chosen me? A wave of relief comes over me as Hala confirms Rowlet has chosen me too! I decide to call it Arrowl because of it's last form. Lillie starts to say I've chosen a great partner which makes me like her more. Just a tad mind. Kukui ends up giving me a weird looking Pokédex and a Trainer Passport. Guess you're useful for something after all Kukui. He says that I should see my mum and show her Arrowl. Eh, I guess, but not right now.
To be continued...
Pokémon Team
Arrowl the Rowlet, Level 5
I'm not a huge fan of nicknames for Pokémon but for a narrative journal, I figured I might as well. Don't expect any good nicknames though, a lot of them will be taken from other interests of mine. Arrowl comes from CW's Arrow which I'm currently watching. I'm pretty big on DC so all my nicknames might be superhero based.
Anyway, that's it for a first entry. Let me know what you think. I intend to get further than I originally planned but trading on my Sun copy took longer than anticipated. I'll try and keep it shorter too, although granted a lot of this was tutorial based. Sigh...walls of text are fun to read.
