Fullmetal Alchemist [Discussion]

You people are going nuts. Remember, Adult Swim SHORTENS the endings for any anime that air the full openings. Since Melissa, UNDO and Rewrite aren't being played for the [adult swim] openings, they had to use Ready Steady Go. By the way, in case you didn't know (and I hate how everyone keeps forgetting this..), Melissa was played as the ENDING of the first episode. Then it became the opening.
Spoiler: Opening Spoiler

Logo doesn't matter. It looks roughly the same, even though they could have done a better job to make it look like the original (considering fansubbers managed to pull the same off with their own versions). But eh, doesn't matter.

This is the first episode. Don't base your judgement on voices on JUST the first episode. Give them time to actually get into their characters. Besides, give Al's VA a chance. He's only a kid starting out in the VAing business. Not everyone starts out professionally.

The script I really don't mind at all. Al's always been somewhat of a 'wuss' in terms of him not being as direct as Ed is. I've posted on Serebii.net's forum a list of changes from the first episode, so I suppose I'll do the same here (and I'll do the same as each episode passes by):

-The explanation of Alchemy in the begining is pretty much the same in both languages. Only difference is that Ed's explaining it in the English version when it was Al who explained it in the Japanese version.

-Small thing, the avatar refered to as Leto is pronounced Leeto in the English version for some reason. And the last man to speak after Al fixes the radio had something quite different to say. Originally he mentioned that there weren't any alchemists in their area, yet in English he offers to give Ed and Al a job if they're looking for work.

-The last man to speak after everyone assumes Al is the Fullmetal Alchemist originally asked if he was really that famous. For some reason, they had him ask if Al would be willing to go to his daughter's birthday party. o_O;

-Sadly, Ed's exaggeration wasn't used in the English version. He wasn't bragging about "CAN A SHORTY DO THIS?!" Original dialouge was this: "Who did you say was small like a grain of rice and doesn't show up in your eyes?!" To which the men he was hurling around were protesting that they didn't say that exactly.

-Ed's talk with Rose was abit different. Originally he explained that Alchemists are basically scientists and had no need for believing in a false thing such as God. He then mentions how it's ironic how Alchemists are the closest things to God. Rose then asked if he was trying to commit blasphemy and mentioned that he was no God and that humans are not things. They avoided the heavy God and blasphemy talk and even had Ed suggest to Rose to pick up an Alchemy book. Not the best thing to have him say considering he knows well enough that human transmutation is the biggest taboo of Alchemy and that she'd attempt trying it even when he then warns her about it later.

-Ed seemed more forceful about getting the Stone in the dub. Originally, when he had the determined glare on his face, he mentioned that they were looking for it. In the dub, he says to Al how it's finally theirs.

-After beating the oversized bird, the chimera leaps at Ed and we hear him scream, yet when the camera pans to him, he's alright and seems to know what he's doing. Such was not the case in the original. The chimera simply leapt at him and all we hear was the sound of it biting. No scream or anything.

-An even more serious dialouge change. As Ed's ripping off his coat, he's explaining the following to Rose: "This is the body of one who enroached upon human transmutation, the territory of God...The Sinner's Body!" Note how his mouth was closed by the time he finally tosses his coat aside. They had Ed asking if that was the body Rose wanted if she did the same in the dub. "Is this what you want?!" ended up being said the moment we see his mouth was entirely closed in the dub.

-After Cornello states that Ed's limbs were taken to the other side, Rose recalls what Ed told her back in front of the shrine. In the dub, Ed repeats himself rather than Rose recalling it as a memory.

-For those wondering, the original version DID have the opening as the ending but only for this episode. Since [adult swim] will be playing Ready Steady Go as the opening for the whole series (there's originally four opening in total), we heard that played instead of the first opening Melissa. At least they kept the whole opening scene from Melissa the same. Remember, this will be ONLY for the [adult swim] run. So when you get the DVDs, the openings will be as they were in the Japanese version.

You forgot that in the Japanese Version, Ed calls Cornello a "third-rate." (Reffering that Cornello just uses cheap Alchemy and not learn it himself)

Con man is such a lame word to use... (IMO, that is...) XD

Also, when the Chimera was attacking Ed, Ed said in the Japanese version that "Oh boy, how am I supposed to fight a chimera with my bare hands?" Also, the clap was changed. Now, it sounded more realistic when Ed claps his hands. (Before, it sounded as if he claps with his bare hands even when he wears gloves).

There was also a part where Ed was forcing Cornello to give them the stone. Ed was waving his hands when Cornello mentioned about the military. In the Japanese version, he was actually making fun of the military (or something like that. His voice changed to give them a sarcastic comment, thus the funny hand-wooshing sound)

The man in the raincoat

XD Oh you mean... him? Everyone loves Roy

I wish everyone would stop assuming that. Check the first episode again in Japanese. The clap was UNTOUCHED. The littlest dialouge I am not touching since it had the same exact meaning. :\

Checked both versions. He basically said the same thing how he didn't care what the military wanted.

Trying to avoid spoilers for cripe's sake. >_> We don't find out who he is until the third episode. Not everyone watched the Japanese version.

*watches DVD* Oh...I didn't notice that...

Yes, but he did change his voice to a very sarcastic tone. I think in the English dub, he just kept on saying in the same tone...

Spoilers? >< How could you when he appears in the third episode...spoilers are spoilers when you give out death dates, and stuff...

Oh! Sorry!

Been forever since I've seen it. >_o

(You mind if I use your list for an FMA website that I've been thinking of making?)

False. Those who are starting off with the dub have no idea who that guy is. Revealing info that they didn't know about since it hasn't been revealed in the US yet is still a spoiler, no matter what the event is.

(You mind if I use your list for an FMA website that I've been thinking of making?)
As long as I get credited for the list and get to see another FMA fansite, be my guest. :x

Not many people would be smart enough to actually look into them, though. :P They just go ahead and check out the anime without looking at the site to see who's who. Considering the site also has synopsis for the first four episodes, I'd somewhat consider that as a spoiler. But really, why are we arguing about me referring to Roy as an unidentified character? XP

Anyways, I downloaded the first episode in English to have a better comparison (ran both English and Japanese at the same time and listened to the English version while reading the subs for the Japanese version) so I edited a few things from my post (and everywhere else I put the comparisons up x_x). I'll probably be doing this more often so I have a better ability to compare the two. Plus I'll be working on a more detailed version of what I posted (like full sets of dialogue that gets changed and some other things) for my own site, so I'll be sure to point you all in that direction.

Who's rip did you download? *can't help but be curious*

Nanashi (the guys formally known as Fork) managed to rip the episode. I lost the link from earlier due to my comp freezing up on me but I managed to get it before that happened. It'll be very useful if they decide to rip the rest of the episodes until I can get ahold of the official DVDs to use.

I seen the first episode and it rocked! I was waiting for this for a whole week. My younger brother downloaded some episodes before it got licensed. Man he was a little dissappointed when it got licensed. That means he couldn't get the rest. But he told me about it, and it sounded interesting. So when I heard it got licensed I was happy. I am going to watch it start to finish. I liked Ed's and Al's voices. ^___^

ChibiGoku is also gonna rip them... so you could use his if you needed to.

(They'll be at s0nicfreak)

I still haven't gotten a chance to watch the beginning. People won't get off the TV long enough. --;

Thanks for pointing me in that direction. I could use all the sources I can get my hands on. ^_^

I've finally finished designing the site and it's up and running. I'll be sure to update as each episode goes by. It's not a glamorous site, but it'll due. *points at his sig*

And after seeing the dub episode several times, it's slowly starting to burn into my head like the Japanese version did. @_o;

IMO, Ed's voice doesn't fit him. I got used to the deep voice that he used to be. Al's voice seems fine but the voice acting is meh...

Ed's voice requires alot of getting used to. It simply doesn't fit at all when he's a kid. The voice actor simply cannot bring Ed to life like Romi Paku did. Al just needs to get used to doing voice acting. It's his first job and he's got the perfect voice for Al. He just needs to get used to it and use more emotion.

You might want to go for a layout. =p

Errr... I don't know, but it looked like something ripped out of Kazza or something... xD;
Sorry, I was talking to ETR. ^_^

I was talking about episode rip. =p

Actually, I can't be bothered to go fancy in detail for the site. XP I could do it, but I can't be bothered to. It's simplistic, loads quickly, and easy on the eyes.
