Game Freak really loves to brag about the games being open world.

Its become readily apparent to me that they like to make it clear that this new pair of Pokémon games is now open world and i think its getting a bit annoying at this point.

But i guess that's the game's main selling point. This was probably a dumb thing to bring up anyway.

(I haven't posted anything on the forum for a while and this was the first thing that came into my mind lately.)

Well, this would be the Pokémon franchise's first ever open world Pokémon game, something that many fans have been asking for for many years, which is a really big deal. Thus, it's the main aspect of the game that they're using to sell it. However, I just hope that the majority of the game's open world isn't mostly empty space like in Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

It's a big change for the series so I don't really blame them for trying to capitalize on that, especially with how popular open-world games tend to be right now. I found Legends to be pretty good but if SV is supposedly even more bustling than that, I'm pretty eager to try it out! L:A was my favorite Pokémon game in forever, the battling and open-world design was mostly smooth and getting through most menus was quick. Adapting some of that smoothness that comes with being a faster-paced open-world game is a definite step up. Wonder what it'll mean for the series going forward though, if they'll continue with this open-world trend or if they'll go back to the older formula eventually??

I never did finish Arceus not due to lack of interest, just never felt like going back. I plan on getting Violet and my close online friend will get Scarlet unless that changes.

I never finished it yet. It's just way too easy, repetitive, and boring for me.

We'll have to see how much open world they actually are...

Which I'm not saying as a bad thing, because as mentioned in other threads, there are several reasons why the Pokémon gameplay loop we all know wouldn't work with an open world structure.

Legends Arceus isn't really an open world game (if that's seriously what people are using as reference) that was just marketing. You have a linear story progression, you have a predetermined level progression, and you have to unlock and visit the different levels in the mandatory order.

All the freedom you have is the choice between staying focused on the main story, or to spend hours exploring, catching and completing side-stuff inbeweeen main missions, by that logic every Pokémon game could be considered open world.

Well, repetitive and boring are very common traits in open world games. That's what happens when, for example, devs don't know how to actually justify the huge map they created, so they feel the urge to fill those huge areas with tons of collectibles and repetitive generic side-activities that most people will only do for the 100%.

The crazy thing is that I actually love the new features that PLA introduced and I want to enjoy the game much more than I do, but the game wants you to catch several of the same species like 25 times. Even though I love the new catching system, it's hard to enjoy when you're doing something so repetitive. Then the game wants me to keep doing stuff over and over in the form of "research tasks." I also don't mind side-quests in games, but my goodness, it's almost like every single NPC you talk to gives you a quest. How can a player expect to manage all that?
