Feedback from the rest of you guys would be appreciated!

    Game Jam: Dungeon Dash!

This is a game-making event, open to both game developers and ROM hackers, both teams and individuals. Your task is to design and create a small playable game that contains exactly one dungeon (and perhaps a small intro map). Don't worry about making a complete stand-alone game with a start and end, and don't worry about a story. We're just interested in the dungeon.

What is a dungeon? It's a single location (a cave, building, ship, space station, test chamber, whatever) that you enter and make your way through. There is traditionally a boss or some significant thing that happens at the end, but sometimes not. There are no limitations on the kind or size of dungeon you make, other than it being a single place for the player to make their way through. Be creative!

There is no limitation on the kind of game you can make either. It could be a Pokémon game, or it might not be. It might feature battles against monsters/people/robots, it might not. It's most likely going to be an electronic game, though, but if you can come up with a dungeon in some other game format, have at it!

    Entry

You should make your game available for download at some point before the closing date. Post the link to the download in this thread.

    When?

The whole GT week, July 6th-12th. No early registration, no late running, just the main week.

    Hosts, judges and whatnot

There only needs to be one host for this, since it's just about making a couple of threads, and apparently that's my job since I suggested this.

This event is for fun only! Games will not be judged or ranked, and will be posted in this event's thread when they're finished rather than sent to me via PM or anything.

Regarding emblems, there'll be one for all participants.

I have a question--is our task only to design the dungeon, or would we have to write scripts and create alongside? It might be latter, most likely, but I just wanted to make sure. Anyway, this seems very fun; I'll try my best to prepare some entry if I'm able!

It's a game jam - you'd have to make the game itself. Drawings of a dungeon are not enough, since no one can play drawings. The whole point is to make a game that others can play; the theme here is "dungeon". It's up to you what to put in the dungeon. If the things you want to add require scripts or code of some kind, then you'll have to make those.

By the way, teams are allowed as well as individual creators.

I think this was the only thing she was asking about, not whether or not drawings were acceptable.

Don't think it would be unfair to allow both teams and individuals? Obviously a whole team has a better chance of creating a game than an individual who has to split their time between each element during the week rather than a team who can divide the responsibilities so no one person feels crunched for time.

I don't see how you could make a game without also making the things (scripts) that you want to put in that game, so I assumed Endless was asking about whether concept art and the like was acceptable.

Maybe it'd be unfair to allow teams of people to compete against individuals. There are three arguments against that. 1) It may take more time to gather a group and organise everyone and assign tasks, 2) with things like RPG Maker you can throw something together by yourself relatively easily, and 3) it still hasn't been decided whether this event is a competition with a winner and losers.

Personally, I'd prefer it to be a "just make something" event with no judging or ranking. However, other people would probably expect it to be a competition. That's one of the things I asked for feedback on.

It'll be just for fun. There's no need for early registration or late extensions - a week should be fine enough. Games will simply be posted in the event thread as they're made.

    Anything more needed?

There's also a mini-hack contest going on here, so maybe you could put some note about into your thread somewhere, so that people don't possibly wind up confusing the two? It's okay if you don't, though; it's not mandatory at all, all up to you. Everything else looks to be all set to me!

I'll advertise the mini-hack contest if it advertises the Game Jam ;)

I'm not great at emblems (certainly not at making them, at least), but I'll consider some bonus ones and/or special acknowledgement.

All games submitted for the Game Jam will be posted in the Game Development section afterwards (the non-ROM hacks, anyway).

I'm bad at drawing. Here's proof:

    "image removed"

I'd really appreciate it if someone else could help me out by making a participation emblem.

I've also been wondering about the extra awards I hinted at, but I can't think of anything. They'll be put straight into the Games Showcase in the Game Dev section... is that enough?
