I once heard that eventually the batteries in the older game boy games eventually go out. I think that is why my pokemon gold got erased. Does anyone now if this is try.

Also does playing it recharge the battery inside?

It's a perfect candidate for speed runs now. Get yourself a new pair of batteries and try get the furthest you can!

What model number or type of battery is it? I don't want to open it to check, risk damaging it and being unable to play it completely. My Silver's cell is loose/empty too, I simply bought Crystal. Blue is still going strong.

If you want to check if your battery is loose, shake your cartridge. It if rattles then your battery might be loose. You'll also notice your game is gone... This is what happened to mine, the save stayed until it was rattled, had a save for a very long time and it disappeared. The same happened again.

I hear playing regularly while its charging helps to maintain the battery's life for longer. Leaving it for weeks on end unplayed can cause the battery to run dry because its trying to keep the time and save game (exactly what happened to mine). I think that's why GSC games run out faster than RBY games - the RBY games don't have to keep the time. I think crystal has a better in-built battery than gold or silver.

I replaced my silver battery and it works fine now. However if you've never used a soldering iron its a bit tricky (well, I found it hard to do, because I didn't know how to use it effectively, plus the kids kept running into the room and I had to get their mum to shoo them because I could just predict one of them would knock into me and SOMEONE would get burned).

Well tah happend to bot my gold and silever bu im not going to replace there battery no way!

Ya that happened a couple of times to me also,
    no reason anyways.
Even if i do change the bettery, there is no difference

Same problem. Don't care. Get something more useful.

I doubt you can buy a replacement battery, so forget it.
