It always baffles me that Americans only speak English. We learn two other languages at least, and some of my class mates speak five.

Pretty much everyone here is fluent in English, so most people don't see the point.

Yeah, but it just seems weird to me. I guess europeans need it more because we meet people with different languages more frequently. But you still have a lot of Spanish speakers in America right?
 
308. A majority of Americans never encounter the Spanish-only speakers, though. Most Spanish speakers have learned enough English to function in English-dominant areas of America.

Languages are optional rather than mandatory learning, so many schools don't put an emphasis on them.

When I was in school, the only languages you could learn through my school were Spanish and French, and those were only taught at the high school up until my final year of high school. They finally expanded the Spanish programs to the lower schools, but it was too late to be useful for me.

Also, it's worth noting that we have no official language declared. Just that documentation be in the majority language as well as in Spanish (and other languages where other languages are spoken by a significant minority).

Yeah, it's just hard for me to accept, haha. In the Netherlands, the whole economy is based on the fact that we speak a lot of languages. We are small, so we have a lot of business across the borders, which forces us to learn languages. I learn English, Dutch and German at school, and there are possibilities to do French or classical languages too. I have friends studying Russian, Polish, Danish and Arabic, so I get in touch with non native languages a lot. And then you have America, where people only speak English, and maybe Spanish. Not saying that there is anything wrong with it, because you probably won't need it, but it's a bit weird for me, haha.

i'm planning on continuing spanish in college so i can travel further south and gets better pay for being bilingual. i'm at a huge disadvantage considering i didn't start speaking spanish until eighth grade but i think in time i can overcome it. i can adapt considering my aunt speaks spanish and my great grandparents only spoke french.
